Wtf are these controls? Should be left click to pick up and drop, and mouse wheel to rotate.

Well I didn't see any of that. For some reason it originally defaulted to 4K max quality and full RT (even though I don't have a RT card), I turned RT off and kept lowering settings to medium at 1080p and it was still wrecking my GPU before just crashing. By far the most demanding game I've ever had installed. After that it wouldn't even start anymore, I tried its own launcher with DX11 mode and "Classic Mode" and whatever but nothing worked anymore, it was dead, even after reboot. Gave up and uninstalled. Oh wait, I think I was confused with Lego Bricktales. That one will run on just about everything. Played a couple levels of Builder's Journey, it does seem a bit more demanding, but even on my GTX 1650 I'm still getting 60fps at 1080p and medium settings, with FSR on Balanced.

Hm. Something funny must be going on, I have a 1660ti and I think this was the first time in a decade that 1080p60 seemed completely out of reach in a game. Even changing the options was hardly possible because it ran so horribly.

You're about at a 1060ti level of performance, which isn't exactly great tbh. I would consider an upgrade now, not for this game in particular or anything, but it's an uphill climb from here.

Builder's Journey is a nice one. I played it via Apple Arcade a while back and really enjoyed it. One of those you can just play through once and be done with. A lovely-looking little game.

The 1660 Ti should be a fair bit faster than a 1060. Probably a good 50% or so. For 1080p60 gaming, barring some tech showcase like Plague Tale Requiem, it's still decent (unlike my desktop RX480, where I need to drop to 900p regularly). Might have to lower settings, but not going to struggle much, especially now that FSR has started to become more common. At this point, it's probably worth waiting to see what AMD and Nvidia have to offer on the midrange in a couple months (RTX 4060 or RX 7600?) rather than buying a potentially obsolete card. After all, both Ampere and RDNA2 are two years old by now.

It works perfectly fine for my current needs, a new card will only be worth it in conjunction with a new monitor (QHD/UHD/120/144). That'll happen at some point, but for the foreseeable future the need doesn't justify the cost.

Even changing the options was hardly possible because it ran so horribly. Thought I'd try it out as I'm using a 1660 Super with an i7 4790. It booted once then crashed when I tried to access the FPS overlay, and now crashes every time I try to open it through the Epic client. Booting from the Launcer.exe in the game's folder allows me to select a DX11 mode which works though (with the overlay too). That aside, with FSR turned on using the "Quality" setting and the Graphics Quality set to the Medium preset, I'm getting 74fps @ 1440p in the initial levels. The card seems tapped at 99-100% though. I'd be surprised if you got worse with the Ti card unless there's other factors. Dunno if that helps much but it might be useful to have a comparison given the similarity of the GPUs. Edit: Turns out it doesn't play nice with Riva Tuner Statistics Server - it needs to be disabled or have the Application Detection Level set to 'None' in it to stop the crashing. In other news, today's freebies are the OG Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics.

Never heard of the GOG one, and already forgot it's name, but it looked like a nice pretty 2d platformer. Metro doesn't sound very christmassy!
Encased is another one I've never heard of, but looks quite nice. Maybe it was an epic exclusive or something.

Encased is very Fallout 1/2 rpg. Did not grip me tough as the world is little bit convoluted. And as many games it apparently has weak end game section. Some people on reddit love it tough.

Re: Encased
the idea of a post apocalyptic 70s world sounds great, as it reminded me of interstate 76. But in the trailer I watched the game itself didn't look particularly 70s, it was just the trailer credits that looked 70s

I bought Encased in a Steam sale a few months ago, enjoyed what I played of it but felt like it needed more of my attention span than I was willing to give it at the time. Will go back to it eventually, if only fircthe amusing character descriptions.

Metro Last Light Redux for today. Must have been given away in the past, because it's in my library already.

Sounds like Death Stranding will be the EGS freebie today. Playing it on PS5 at the mo, but quite curious to see what it looks like on PC with everything turned up to 11.

Plain is a bit harsh. It doesn't have any really fancy effects that elevate over the console version but, especially at a distance, the scenery is pretty lovely.
(Ignoring some DLSS checkerboarding at times)

Today's free Epic game is F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch. I must admit I've never even heard of this one until today but it doesn't look half-bad.

These giveaways are making me feel bad that there's loads of developers out there who have obviously worked very hard to make nice looking games that no-one has even heard of.

Ooh, nice. Already have it for PS5 but nice to have options for whenever I get around to playing it. Supposed to be a decent Metroidvania despite the awful name.
