Periodic reminder to anyone in the UK earning over £50k and claiming child benefit- sort out a self assessment and make sure you’re happy with it well before it’s due.
I thought I didn’t have to do one for 2022/2023, buried my head in the sand a bit, and have now been charged £100 and told to do one immediately. And when I’ve done it, it’s saying I owe quite a bit more than I was expecting, so I’m ringing them to figure it out.
I’ve now been on hold for over an hour

Assume a typo as gov.uk gives the limit as £60K?
Had a bit of a puckered arse moment there as I’ve never bothered to read this. Collectively we’d be over limit but thank Christ it’s set individually.
Edit: good luck hedben

drakesmoke I think it changes to a higher amount for the tax year we’re currently in, but for the 2022/23 tax year (EDIT - and the 23/24 tax year), if you earned over 50k you’d have to pay back a proportion of child benefit you received, and over 60k you had to pay back all of it. It’s a simple percentage of that 50k to 60k range, eg. 55k is halfway between 50 and 60, so that means owing back 50% of whatever you received. Earn 52500, you’d owe 25%, 57500 means you’d owe 75% and so on. It sucks that they can’t work it out themselves, and they don’t make it obvious that this is a thing- I had no idea until I got a letter in late 2023. Anyway I finally got through and although they couldn’t explain everything they did answer a couple of queries I had, so I’ve submitted what they need and now I need to pay up

How did it work with salary sacrifices for childcare vouchers? Don’t think it matters as wife’s only just gone over 50k, but if they hadn’t changed it to 60,000 we’d have been on the hook.

I don’t think childcare vouchers made any difference, there wasn’t a prompt about them in the self assessment (unless I missed it)

It's done on taxable pay. So Childcare vouchers and pension contributions etc reduce that amount - hence why I lump in more pension to bring that down. Charitable contributions too. And don't forget that fir this FY, the levels have changed again.

My childcare vouchers and pension contributions both come out of my pay before it’s taxed though, so I think it said not to include them in the assessment? (The pension anyway, it didn’t mention vouchers)
Edit- and I do pay a regular 25 quid a month to charity but it said I need to get some kind of document from them to prove that, and I was already late submitting so I didn’t bother

Indeed - you don't include them but they will have brought down taxable income, meaning the amount repaid is less than it would have been otherwise. It's a kicker all right though.

My boy had his first driving lesson yesterday. /o\
How has this happened and why can't the ageing process ease off a bit.

I'm not buying him a fucking car! He'll be off to university hopefully, so won't need one. We're going to try to get him insured on the missus' car- it's not so expensive during the learning process I think, but then goes nuts when they pass. Maybe try to get a named driver thing where they allow no claims to accrue, although i think they are rarer options these days.

Been discussion on here about EHCPs before.. came across this stat while doing some reading...
14k SEND appeals in 22/23, of which 86% were connected to council refusal to issue an ECHP or dispute over its contents. Of the 8k cases decided by tribunal, council lost 98%...

Exactly. It’s a numbers game for Councils forcing parents to sue them before they’ll do their legal duty. It’s a fucking disgrace. Guess which parents are actually going to take them to court? So guess which families are therefore excluded from the social care to which they’re entitled by law? And for which they’ve already paid through their taxes? It’s a fucking scandal.

My boy (7) broke his arm yesterday, poor sod. Just in time for summer, he was really getting into football and martial arts. Very unlucky just slipped in the playground.
I broke both my arms as a kid so it seems to run in the family, unfortunately.
Still quite sore, but he was amazing. The NHS staff were phenomenal, every time I've been to the children's hospital I've been in awe of the job they do, I don't know how they do it.

Bless him. You can get some great sleeves etc that completely cover the cast so he can still go swimming etc.
Agree re EHCPs. I'm well versed in legislation, appeals, forms etc and even I found it all a bit of a minefield. God knows how anyone without that background would cope tbh. We got lucky and had a clinical psychologist on tap to assess and write a comprehensive report that said very plainly "give this child an EHCP". Council rolled over very quickly.

We had to pay barristers and expert witnesses for their court time, all of whom submitted written statements that made it perfectly clear that it was an open and shut case, still the council waited until the day before trial to concede, meaning none of those costs could be recouped.

Slight change of tone. Took my son to Centre Parcs today. Enjoyed the subtropical swimming paradise so much he code browned right through his swimming nappy. Paradise lost.

I think we were able to gather up the strays without most people seeing. If the waves had been on we’d not have stood a chance.

Congratulations!!! Second one or more?
My oldest is teething again at 18 months and boy is she agitated. Very temperamental.
Which results in her scratching or pinching us and more worrisome her younger sibling as a response.
I think we are definitely not doing enough to discourage the behaviour.
