When I was in a game store a very long time ago some parent asked me if some 18 rated game was suitable for their kid that was with them.
I looked at the kid, smiled and said no. He looked shocked as their parent slowly put it back on the shelf, as I picked up a copy and went to the till.

I know it's not comparable given the difference in graphics, but I thoroughly enjoyed chopping heads off in Barbarian on the C64. Our job is to be hypocrites though.

Yeah I chatted with my kid once and he was absolutely incredulous that older games deserved any kind of age rating at all. I think it was GTA San Andreas, which he saw me playing soon after it came out, and I went to switch it off because it was unsuitable and he basically said “but… look at it, how can that be scary or gory?”. Kids these days need photorealistic gore to get freaked out apparently.

We've still held firm in 18 rated games and film but relented with 15/16.
What makes it harder is other parents who just let their kids play whatever and we end up looking like the bad guys.

Yup. He's the only 11 year old not watching 18s apparently. Have told him that's likely nonsense.

It is always difficult. I have relented on CoD now, so many of our lads mates played it. No chance with GTA V thouhh.
My concerns over CoD campaign were mostly related to torture/no Russian bits, but effectively all they do is play multi-player. Where the major worries are toxic arseholes on voice comms.
Given he's almost 15, it's only a matter of time until i have no say anyway. I reckon at 16, i'll be at the 'suit y' self' stage...

Any advice on how to get my three year old boy to drop a load in the potty?
He pees no problem but has an aversion to doing number 2.

I wouldn't sweat it mate. He'll get there when he's ready. Bribery helps, but usually, it'll just click one day.

Reward sticker chart on the wall of the big. Drop a pop, get a sticker will give it a try, thanks Make a big deal of it too - if you’re off for a shit, have mum big it up and afterwards high five. After you have washed your hands etc.

We had a potty story book, that helped.

Weird to see what clicks and what doesn't.
If anyone had said to me a few years back that rowing would be the thing that my boy would get into, I would have smiled, shook my head and ran away at pace. Yet here we are now. He's up to 2 sessions a week just now and absolutely loving it to bits. Scrapes all over his knuckles after a 10 miler in a quad on Saturday and he couldn't be happier as apparently that means he's doing it right and his technique is improving.
Quite like it as well tbh as it gives me an extra couple of hours each time out on my bike or running alongside him along the canal.

We have had one minor and one major sugar crash already. It's bed time but seems as if feeding them was mistake and a total meltdown is on it's way. I'm not all that far behind either.

Hold on, 5th wind and mood has improved. Watching Shang-Chi and apparently popcorn is expected. Wonder what the awake count will be by the end. Paddy power have stopped taking bets on me.

We almost made it until the end of the day without a meltdown but failed right at the last when the eldest refused (in spectacular fashion, in front of the grandparents) to stop playing the game we were playing (charades) and go to bed. Out and out defiance. It was embarrassing.
We've been struggling a bit with this and are now on a zero tolerance policy with any refusals and backchat etc. Fuck knows what got into him but it's becoming increasingly difficult to manage. I suspect ADHD was a factor here as well as sugar but whilst that may be a contributing factor, I don't think it's an excuse. Can't just let him get away with everything.
Any advice gratefully received, as we are in the dark a bit here.

My sympathies, think we had about 6 meltdowns yesterday, 5 from the eldest 1 from the youngest! 😭🙂
Careful with the zero tolerance policy, once you've taken this or that away you can quickly have no ammunition left, then they have nothing else to lose.

No, I know and why there's a sliding scale of punishments (sorry, consequences...). Been trying to do more reading on how to manage things better and it's a minefield. It's especially this ODD/defiance thing that pushes my buttons.

Our technique is Ask, explain, tell, raise voice calmly, shout.
We have to be a little patient as the oldest has glue ear.

My 3 yr old is in full regular meltdown mode at the moment. Its rough but generally he’s calmable. Bigger issue is that he pushes all my wife’s buttons with them so we end up with both of them angry and shouting at each other which just escalates things further.

Did you just stop the game or warn him? Ours needs to know what the deal is and to expect change so rather than saying ‘ok, cool game, we are done now’ we would say ‘ok, everyone has two charades left so make them good’ or something. We could never just do something but with enough warning the tantrums for most things stopped. She seemed to just find most things jarring so we would have to lay the road quite early. Plenty of warning, checkpoints, countdowns and all that.
She’s kind of grown out of it now but still doesn’t like things sprung on her.

Oh, warned many times. "this is the last round/turn" etc to try and minimise that. He says he thought he was being funny and was doing it just to make his sister laugh. He's very immature, which I think is a contributory factor too.

As a sufferer of class clownism myself, I feel his dilemma.

Yeah, he definitely likes to be the class clown. It's the not stopping when told multiple times that I struggle with. A lot of it is definitely how we handle him though, as what we are doing at the moment clearly isn't working.

Had this rather passive aggressive message delivered to me yesterday by my 8 year old lad after some silly nonsense, on the plus side he should be getting his Pen Licence this week.
