We've got a bigger one in the living room and I'm forever threatening to destroy the thing. I've come to realise that it hates me, as my son and the mrs ask for stuff and she's all "no problem here you go". I ask for something and she goes "I'm sorry I don't speak Spanish" before playing Ed Sheeran five thousand times.
Didn't realise the Echo did Spotify. We ended up getting a full amazon music family sub for ours as otherwise there was no way to play two different things in two different rooms at once.

We've now got Echo devices in every room in the house including the kids room. In the kids room, they use it for listening to Amazon Prime music (explicit music off), Audible books (Famous Five gets played a lot), an alarm clock or radio. We also use it to call them downstairs to tea and they can turn on their TV using the smart plug I setup (and which auto turns off at a set time). They also use it for the time.
Their Echo in their study / homework room, they use for asking how to spell things, looking up things, converting things, the weather and various bits and pieces. They use it to set timers for their homework and tests as well.
We started with one of the things, but have just found them so handy. This morning, as I was stuck on work calls, I was able to Announce to the house when I saw their friend being dropped off and later someone coming to pick them up. When my youngest is painting in the summer house (shed with windows), we can drop in on them and check they are okay or to come back in. We use the Echo Show in the kitchen for recipies, for watching prime video, listening to music / audible or making a shopping list (which I then take with me on my app). I have the camera shutter across on the Show, but on the whole I'm not too concerned about someone having so little life that they want to listen in to the drivel I'm talking.

As I say, they support it, but integration is crap. As for it not recognising your voice...did your wife set it up?! They tend to recognise the initial voice better.
@monkman they record it and you can play it back via the website....

I'm not that married to Spotify so I guess I could switch to an Amazon Music Unlimited sub if that made things easier. Kind of resent having to do that though. Also we mostly use Spotify on Sonos, I don't know if the Amazon Music integration works as well.

Dougs how does it work with the Family sub then? Each Echo has to use the same Spotify profile? I guess I could get a Premium Duo sub and use the second profile for both kids, and keep the first profile for Sonos?

Oh no, then they couldn't both use it at the same time /o\

Actually, there is... kind of. Its not ideal, but saved me £144 a year (I think thats the cost). Play amazon music in one room and in any other room, play amazon music on a smart phone and transfer the output to the echo device in the room (or in anoy other room for that matter). Smart phones give you more choice as well, as the Echo devices themselves can often swear blind that whatever you're after is "only available on Unlimited" when its right there on the phone. You obviously know you can make your speakers into Groups and play music to "Everywhere" or "Downstairs" and suchlike.

Dunno about Spotify, but on Deezer, the issue was you can only have one profile per Amazon account - and you need to be 13 to have an Amazon account (which can be got round of course). I just found it frustrating. Keep meaning to see if Spotify is the same, and if so try and sort it with Amazon Music (which of course is what they want you to do...)

OK thanks, so assuming Spotify is the same, I could get around that by having say my Amazon account associated with my son's Dot (pointing to one of the Spotify profiles) and my wife's Amazon account associated with my daughter's Dot (pointing to a different Spotify profile)?
For some reason this is confusing me. I'm more Luddite than I realised!

Oh god, does that mean my wife and I each need to buy one Dot on our separate accounts?!

No, you can set them up with whatever Amazon account you want. Having 2 separate accounts does limit what you can do from the app though - I especially like dropping in on my daughter to tell her dinner is ready.

Wow. Didn't realise they were so popular. I've been avoiding all the voice control stuff like the plague. (Turned off alexa on the fire tv, turned off cortana on win10, never use hello google on my phone, etc..)
Even if I was interested, there's no way my wife would let any of them into the house.

I was wondering if I could setup a family Spotify account on my Echos, and use my own one on my phone.
I mostly pick tracks on my phone when I want to play them on an echo, but kids stuff gets asked for.

We have a few in the house. The girl has the alarm clock one for, obviously, alarms and reminders and she listens to a lot of audiobooks on it.
I also use it as an intercom rather than screaming up the stairs at her like a peasant.

Thats what my wife was like until the first little Echo Dot arrived. It soon became "handy". Throw in some smart plugs to control the lights turning on at dusk and the TV on by saying "Alexa TV on" and they started to pop up everywhere. The Echo Show (8" and on a swivel stand) she loves faffing about with and saving recipies on or looking at photos from years back. Shes way, way too handy at adding shit to the shopping list as I discover when I open in in the Supermarket.

Yeah, we were also skeptical at first but have fully embraced smart listening devices in every room over the past couple of years. Dropping in or broadcasting when dinner's ready is great, especially when they're listening to Amazon Music over their headphones because it interrupts the music for the announcement. Much better than screaming blue murder up the stairs.
You do have to be mindful of the camera, but Kid 1 keeps hers blocked by the physical slider constantly, and Kid 2 has his positioned in such a way that it's only pointed at an opposite wall anyway.
The voice recognition seems to have deteriorated recently, I've been meaning to recalibrate it. But it works most of the time. And we have fun stupid games where we try to out-shout any requests for songs we don't like. My favourite is yelling "...DAY, BY LOU REED" after Kid 1 asks for "Perfect" (by Ed Sheeran)

I’ve echos in the bedroom and main room. Mostly used for controlling the lights (Wi-Fi bulbs are ones of man’s greatest ever invention) telling the time and learning if an untried good is safe for the kid’s bearded dragon to eat
She has an older one in her room at her mums that I gave her. She uses it to call me without the need of having to get her mums phone or being told to end the call.
It’s great for that, although the quality of the microphones are so shit it’s a wonder Alexa can make out anything any of us ever say to her

Hopefully not too bad. The calamine bath technique really helped for my kids to stop the itching. More importantly, have you and any other adults in your house had it? I had chicken pox in my early 30s having avoided it as a kid, and it was horrible. I had them in my throat. Yuk.

I thought getting Chicken Pox as a kid was generally considered a good thing.

Ours caught it when we first came to Spain. The youngest was feeling bad on the day we first moved in, headaches and nausea. At first thought it was just the change with the heat but the next day found the spots. Totally fine once the spots show up. Then sure enough a couple of days later at night we could hear laughing in the eldest's room, went to check on him and he was staring into space giggling then let out the most terrifying scream I've ever heard and freaked out. He had a fever but again by the next day was fine.

I thought getting Chicken Pox as a kid was generally considered a good thing. Yeah when I say I avoided it, that's not entirely what I mean. My mum tried to get me to catch it, even putting me in the same crib as another kid who had it when I was about 2. But I never succumbed. That's why it was so miserable when I got it as an adult- the symptoms are much worse than having it as a kid

It's still OK to find other kids annoying right? Even though I have one now?!

I haven't slept properly in over a decade, and they don't fucking sleep before we pass out. Which means other things.
Little shits.

Yep my kids are annoying as fuck. Don't get me started on other people's kids. There's certainly something smug about eating out or being in a shop or whatever when someone else's kid's are kicking off though.

What the fuck do people call their kids nowadays? I have an Irish surname, you know the type, begins with an L ends with an N. Was sat outside a coffee shop this afternoon enjoying the sunshine with a friend. Somebody's shaggy haired kid was misbehaving, being normal I guess. All I could hear was " Sit down L********n" " No cake for you L*******n" " Will you behave L*******n"
