She'll probably be OK, she's got strong legs Any other tips? Pool complex good? Pool is ace, the new rides are fantastic. Keep in mind when you need to book things by - the pool especially goes quickly (I booked at about 6.50am and got all slots we needed). There's no shortage of things to do for all ages. None of it is cheap but if the kids are young, the pool and the play parks keep them busy. We've been about 6 times now and I love it. Proper mental relaxation. In fact, the only downside I found this time around is the better availability of WiFi. Preferred it when you got nowt!

RE: the Xbox thing. I gave the kids my Xbox X last Xmas when I upgraded to the Series X. As a compromise to having access to one in the bedroom they agreed to limited game time. I'm really chuffed that I've got kids who ASK before putting the TV or games on. They do really good with that sort of thing, and as a result they get to have things like gaming nights on Friday/Saturday and stay up a bit later and have fun together. The less gaming they do CONSTANTLY or of their own accord, the more fun it is to make a thing of at weekends. Works for us anyway. I'm impressed. I'd like to say mine's like that but he does spend a fair bit of time gaming with his friends. He's really been making a good effort of late though (on threat of me banning everything) and has now taken up rowing, which he really enjoys, piano lessons (first session with a new teacher last Monday went very well indeed, she reckons he might be ready for grade 2 already - which is nice as he's not touched it in 6 months) and is now going to BB's as well. I'd like to prise him off the consoles a bit more but it's what all his friends do after school so I'm prepared to compromise on it so long as he keeps the other stuff up. A part of me hopes he builds the confidence up to go back to rugby in a few months but I'm not going to force him. Plus, I can't lie, I love gaming with him. He's bloody good at it as well the little sod.

I almost tagged your name on that, Dougs, so I'm glad you replied. He's still sleeping it off at the moment. I'm torn with what to do for the best to be honest. Given that he's got an en suite (don't ask) and an Xbox in his room, he'll probably be fine to be honest. An Xbox in his room, braver than me! It would make life so much easier but we'd never see him....haaaang on! Gaming while sat on the bog? Sounds like he’s in for a pretty sweet isolation to me. I hope he’s alright.

So it looks like COVID has found its way into our house via secondary school. The eldest (11) has had a bit of a cough developing since Sunday, and yesterday it was really bad. Did a rapid test and there was a faint positive line, so we've ordered a PCR. Anyone know how quick you get results back on those? Both my better half and I took a test and came back negative, despite her having really rough cold symptoms at the moment. Of course, as all parents will know these things nearly always crop up when you've got something planned. For us it is our wedding anniversary today and we had a fancy restaurant booked (for 2 months) for Friday night. Best I go ahead and cancel that later today. What's the protocol here with isolation? Do I quarantine him to his room including meals?? Feels a bit mean but I'd also quite like to not spread this around the rest of the family. Almost seems inevitable now though. PCR test returned as positive this morning. We've stuck to our guns and kept him in his room (except for 2 dinners - for the rest he hasn't been hungry) and for a kick about in the garden to get him moving (which completely wiped him out). Headaches, tiredness and nausea for him. Boooo.

It has some really good routines for all ages. Ultimately it comes down to training them, but that doesn't have to mean controlled crying or whatever.

We won the lottery with the clocks changing it seems. Boy had a birthday party in the afternoon that tired him out so he was up at 0830 (old 0730) and downstairs on his own watching tv. Girl was tired out from the cold and wasn’t up until later and even then was playing quietly in her room when I went to get her.
All in we got an extra hour snoozing which is bliss. Doing nothing again today - mum taking the Halloween tour out later on her own.

Yeah, its long covid I don't want my kids getting which is why we drove "quite a long way" to get them vaccinated as quickly as possible. Its almost certain they are going to be exposed to it when they go back to school, so I want to give them the best chance we can.

UK, but my kids school is quoting December for vaccinations at the moment. They had quoted an earlier date, but they were let down by supply. My nearest vaccination site was fully booked until earliest sometime this month for 12-15's. We're wanting them to have had 14 days between vaccine and going back to school ideally.

My previous work partner’s daughter tested positive in January just before her first birthday. Still coughing and going in for check ups now.

Now the FDA has approved vaccines for 5-12’s my 8 year old can finally get the shot. She hates getting jabbed with needles but is eager to get vaccinated
Sadly, her Mum has lately decided that she wants to take control of doctors appointments, after letting me handle 95% of such things since the kid started walking, (including leaving me and the 18 month old to spend four hours in ER on Xmas eve for an ear infection so she could sit home and watch TV. Protoplasm, if you’re feeling sorry for your situation sitting in the children's ER at Xmas eve and witnessing an occupied gurney with the sheet pulled over the top being wheeled out of the examination room will recalibrate things toot sweet)
Inevitably this will mean it’s weeks before she gets vaccinated as her Mum isn’t too great, (in case the above didn’t drop a big enough hint).
I’m sure it’s all coincidence that this happened at precisely the same time that she got called by child services a few days after I took the kid to an intake exam for a counselor, where she casually spilled some of her experiences. The pseudo legalese her texts have been taking does at least bring great mirth.

Our eldest is now over the worst of it and today we've let him escape from his room and reintegrated back into the house properly. His little sister is delighted. She's missed him the most. Today and tomorrow left for self isolation then back to school. It's been... testing.
Annoying that he missed out on the vaccination that they were dishing out at school a few weeks back, but being 11 meant he couldn't have it yet. "I wish they'd let me have it, I'd have been first in line."

The funeral I was talking about the other day was last night. Kid free in the end thankfully.
Although on getting home Baby Maybe almost immediately poured his fruit juice all over the photos my dad had given me to bring home.

Yup, back to school today. Given that he's done little else other than sit in his room playing Destiny I think he'll come home this afternoon and fall asleep!
We're going to do LFTs this morning to see if we truly did escape it.

What are the security and privacy implications of giving my kids (9 and 5) Echo Dots for their bedrooms? I'm a bit of a tinfoil hat wearer when it comes to voice activated devices - these would be the first in my house. The Dots just seem a good way to let my kids listen to music independently without giving them some sort of screen device as well, which I'm also ultra-cautious/luddite about.

Mine's had an echo dot in his room for years but I'm painfully oblivious to most things.

My 2 have echos. My youngest uses hers continuously, loves her music. Eldest uses his for an alarm and bugger else. The musical heathen. They are always on but you can scroll through on Amazon and see what they've "inadvertently" picked up and delete stuff. I haven't done so for a while mind you.
One other thing, the integration with Spotify etc is patchy as fuck. I upped to a Family sub on Deezer, assuming that you could link profiles. You can't. Not if you want to use the same Amazon account or have other echos etc. It's a pain, my profile is now full of Disney songs and Lin-Miranda Manuel.

Yes we're on Spotify one-person premium and I was assuming I'd need to go up to a Family sub. So how does it work? You can't assign a separate Spotify profile to each Echo?
Also what do you mean about what they've picked up? You can see a transcription of what it's heard?!
