I’m going “wild” camping with my 13yo in a few weeks. It’s on some land owned by a family friend- there’s a fire pit, cabin for storage, even a pizza oven! But no toilets and no taps, so we need to bring all our water in with us and learn how to dig a latrine.
He’s excited about having our own fire because he’s done that with scouts, whereas we weren’t allowed open fires at the last campsite we went to. I’m also looking forward to it… maybe a little nervous about how far we’ll be from civilisation (no car, 4 mile walk to the nearest village). Should be nice and relaxing though.

Ugh. Highers results day. Waited hours for the boy to be arsed waking up to see what he got.
Mixed at best. The full gamut of results from an A in what he really wants to do through a B, C, D & an F. Had given up hope for chemistry because his teacher was weird as fuck, but still hoped for a pass. He's halfway to university though i guess, just needs to up the work rate for sixth year.
We'll see what ucas say when he applies for university in a few months.

Uni's only take into account A/S levels, don't they? This is kind of how we are pitching things - each stage is the stepping stone to the next stage. How's he feeling about things?

In the past the likes of Oxford and Cambridge look at other grades too when it’s the predicted grade and provisional offer time.
As someone who did shit at school and college because I did no work at all for the exams but still got a masters and got a well paid job then it doesn’t always matter.

Ah! I get confused, doesn't take much. Pretty self-explanatory. That's a lot of A levels then!

Only because UK specializes soooo young / early! I did 9 subjects to A level equivalent on the continent. I still don't know what I want to do with my life, how is a 16 year old supposed to know

My littlest sister didn't even finish school... But she's now got a master's and a PhD! I had great school grades, but scraped past for my undergrad and left it there.

Yeah, my school grades were ok but did well with my degree as I was fully engaged. Was done after that though, needed to earn some cash.

Solidarity with any parents whose kids are getting GCSE results today! Kid#1 did really well, we’re very proud. Her lowest grade was in Photography, which she wants to do at A-level, so we might have a chat about that. But I figure it might be a break/change of pace from her more academic A-levels (Maths and Biology), and she still got a 6 (B) so it’s not like she flunked it.

In old money she was predicted As and Cs and somehow managed to completely average that out to all Bs, barring art which has made me want to go down to the school and smash their windows.
She put her heart and soul into an absolutely massive and brilliant body of work but came out with a C because,, I assume, the class not actually having a teacher for the entire final school year means she didn’t do exactly what they were after.
She wanted to do it at a-level so now we are having drama that I don’t think if the school was unable to support her through GCSE it would be crazy to do it at a-level. But the alternatives in that time slot suck and it would mean a reshuffle of the other subjects.
I’m simultaneously as proud as can be and absolutely fucking fuming and, as you can see, struggling not to fixate on the one negative.

UPDATE: apparently there were actually parents at the school kicking off because their kids dropped from predicted A to D, so it could have been worse, I suppose.

My eldest did her first gcse in French this year, she’s in year 9 and they do French two years early in her school. Got a 7 which is an A in old money, super proud as I was lazy and thick as pig shit at school and got an F 😊 (tbf I still am)

Our current issue is getting our lazy fucker to engage with the ucas application process. Missus has searched out a few courses that might of interest to him, from what he has said he enjoys most, but getting him to actually read about them and what they contain over the years is difficult (nigh on impossible!). FFS my boy, they will not just *give* you a place, you have to look into what you want to do and where and find out what you need to get first! At least the school will help them through it, but oh my god it's frustrating how little they will engage with you and discuss stuff. He was announcing the other day he was changing subjects and was going to start an advanced higher (equivalent level to about half of first year in a scottish uni) in a subject he already has an A for, when he really needs to focus on getting better marks in his other subjects to make it. Would he discuss stuff with us? Not a chance. Just sloped off to his room- I don't mind you doing it and will gladly support you through it, but at least let us know why you think this extra work would be of use!! Obviously, he did eventually think about our points when he was in a better mood and decided to stick as he was and really try to achieve as well as he could in the subjects that really matter in his last year at school. Gah. Just counting down until he hopefully goes to university & leaves home now tbh. /Kind of joking, but also not joking.

So my 22yr old son failed his degree final exam and the resit.
My 16yr old daughter got 8/7in multi-sciences GCSE, and 7 in maths, but she also got 2 in EngLan, and now can't go to college.
I'm having a range of emotions right now.

Oh dear.
Resits/appeals?

No appeal, as the scores were far enough away to indicate it wouldn't be worth it.
For the daughter we're just trying to find something which means she isn't spending a year just doing a single GCSE resit.

A mate of mine failed English back in the days of when these were o levels. We all thought it hilarious as his mum was an English teacher.
Anyway, they let him do A levels with the proviso that he passed his resit in the first year or be thrown out. Maybe somewhere will let your daughter do similarly.

It's my oldest boy's last day in preschool today. He starts big school next week.
A bit emotional dropping him off this morning, and will be worse collecting him this evening.
He'll be saying goodbye to kids he's knows since he was 6 months. None of them are going to the same primary school, but he'll see some of them at sports.

I resat maths in sixth form and college.. failed them both times. I then went to uni and there were talks about me getting an equivalent to a C, but they sort of forgot. In the end I couldn't be bothered to chase it up, and got my degree. I've 'lied' on my CV about having A-C in maths, english etc. No one has ever checked I think now I'm a good 15 years into IT... no one gives a shit.

I've never been diagnosed with it, but I'm pretty sure I have dyscalculia. Basically dyslexia for numbers. If I've got a calculator, then I can easily sort out everything. In my head it's like the cogs are slowing down.
Also I seem to recall I got an A in my coursework for maths. Basically excel. So yeah fuck math tests without calculators.

I finally got to catch up with the 16yo about her GCSE results last night. I was expecting her to be thrilled, but she’s grumpy because 2 of her mates didn’t get the grades for the college she’s going to, so now she feels like she’s leaving her friends behind.
I tried the old “you’ll make new friends”, but I sure as hell didn’t listen to that when I was her age so I don’t expect it will comfort her much either.

We had a sit down with the school bods and they held their hands up and said that they are pretty much accepting people onto a-level art on their predicted grade and made assurances that an excellent teacher is in place to take the course.
I still severely have my doubts but we compromised on using that first month as an evaluation and if it’s still a shit show, she’s moving to CompSci.
I do feel bad for the school. It’s not entirely their fault they have been unable to keep fully resourced (in anything really) and it’s a minor miracle they got this group of kids through at all. The poor little buggers started year seven, got sent home and came back in year nine.

Yeah, first cohort totally fucked by covid. Add in the interference from Ministers. They have all done brilliantly just to get through it.

It’s sad but the great thing about kids that age is they’re super resilient. They’ll make friends wherever they go.
