Local authorities have been utterly gutted but there's no excuse for that at all. Sometimes it's just knowing the right person to talk to - when I was trying to get help for my mum, the hospital crisis team were the ones who stepped in and then signposted and chased others. Can easily see that some people might not be as helpful or diligent though.

Completely off topic but I was just wondering, how do any of you find the time to game with multiple kids? I just can't do it and I'm struggling to justify putting any money into a hobby that involves a black or white box just sitting in the corner of a room collecting dust

No time at all. I’m about 10% into the Elden Ring dlc despite buying it launch.
If I’m luck maybe two or three hours a week at best.

Don't sleep, obviously... I get a couple hours in after bed time. I really suffer though if I stay on until 4am.. I'm not a teenager any more!

2-3 hours a month if I'm lucky. Kids rule the big telly and by the time we've got them vaguely near bed, I'm too knackered to want to do anything. Started playing in my lunch hour but decided exercise was probably better overall.

I have 1 session a week with friends which is about 8pm-10.30pm of FIFA clubs. It's in the calendar as a bit of a social really, and a welcome break from speaking to the same faces every hour of every day.
For other gaming I might manage 30-45 mins a night of a single player if the mrs gets tired before me and goes up. That's if I can motivate myself to bother as opposed to reading a book or working on writing stuff.
We were lucky enough to acquire a decent telly for free for one of the kids' room, so the 14 year old plays xbox in his room with his mates - again, it's almost always a social thing and at least it frees up the living room for us to have time to ourselves.

I can recommend living in one country and working in another. 😅 Three nights away a week gives me all the time I need, I feel guilty for not playing more.

Eldest also has a tv in his room and the ps4. But of course, it's not the PS5 on a shiny OLED. So still won't sod off. Despite seemingly not liking us much, the stroppy so and so.

My gaming is about 30 minutes a week in total. The kids are really shit at controlling anything (still can’t even manage Mario kart with assists) so it’s not looking good for playing with them.
“Use the stick to steer” Continues without even touching the stick. “I’m bored”. Etc.

My older girls don’t play much - a bit of Mario Kart occasionally, and the 12yo plays Disney Dreamlight Valley with me which we enjoy. My youngest is an absolute chip off the old block, in that he has no hand eye coordination whatsoever and prefers to watch other people play games on Youtube. 😂

May god have mercy on our souls.

I game from about 8:30-11 most evenings. The 8yo is going to sleep by then, and the 13 and 16 year olds just chill in their room, as does Mrs hedben more often than not. Sometimes I have to relinquish the TV to the 13yo, but that all adds up to at least 10-12 hours a week so I guess I’m fine with this hobby for now.

My boy took his first steps today. I was there and everything. If there were Xbox Achievements for parenting one would have popped up. 5G.
It’s a big deal to us because he’s 18 months old and we were starting to worry something was up. He was a preemie baby so is a little behind anyway but he’s the only one at his nursery class not walking and talking.
What can I say… it’s coming home!

Magic. Although now you won't be able to take your eyes off him. In many ways the hardest stage - so used to chucking them in a buggy or something and now, no chance of a quiet loo visit!

There wasn’t before! He’s too crazy. You have to basically put him in a pen near the toilet and shit with the door open. Sorry kid, you’re seeing a psychiatrist when you’re older.

Boyo made it back under his own steam. Had fun enjoyed liam Gallagher, but annoyed he didn't get the end of examples set because others wanted to bail for liam. He should have rounded up some others to stay, but they're all new to this malarkey.
Dispatched them with some beer to rendezvous with others for day 2.
Fingers crossed for more smooth sailing...

Actually had a positive interaction tonight! It’s been a while.
She asked if she could bake a giant cookie so I walked her through using the gas oven from switching it on at the socket, to ignition, pre-heating, setting the timer (of course this resulted in her disappearing upstairs and me having to bellow her down) to taking it out to check. She fairly shat herself at that bit but she did it and also now knows that grease proof paper is safe to touch.
Very welcome because she’s a bit averse to adulting in domestic terms - doesn’t like using her own key and stuff. But think she’s been doing cookery at school and is maybe getting the bug a bit - she helped mum prep a spag Bol last weekend too. I am one of those old fashioned twats that think parenting is ultimately about teaching them to survive without you so all this is very good. God knows I started too late.
She’s also promised to make me a beads bracelet from a kit she’s just ordered. Doubtless she will spell something insulting using the letter cubes she has m. Or forget! But that will be nice.

Just gotta make the most of what little you get at that stage & hope it all changes as they get more mature. It does, but boy it seems incrementally slow at too many points.

They did it. My 2 kids actually allowed us to go out for dinner and be left alone without killing each other. No babysitters or anything. They did their own thing for a while and then watched a (pre-arranged) film together. We were only gone 3.5hrs but my god that's a win.

We've done some test runs with us popping to the supermarket and back whilst leaving them (14, 10) to Fortnite together and that's worked out OK. Will definitely try an evening one soon.

Yeah, 14 and 11. Regularly leave them alone for dog walks, trips to the shops etc but this is the first time of an evening. We had to lay it on thick a bit but hopefully we might be able to do this more often.

If my family is anything to go by, you’ll have a second wave of not wanting to leave them alone together as they enter into the late teens. To be fair my brother was a dick. It was bliss when he wasn’t there but he’d come back from the pub and get violent because he thought I ate something of his from the fridge. In actual fact he just didn’t look in the fridge hard enough.
And then there was the whole - “Do my washing up! I’ve been at work all day!” He hadn’t. He’d been smoking behind Tesco’s mostly.

Jeez. 2 days of the summer holidays and the kids are already moaning about being bored!
To her credit, the elder one is actually trying to use less screens. But that's just exacerbating the boredom problem. We've already played a bunch of board games and card games. And watched a movie. (Movies don't count as screen time. it is written)
And this was the weekend, so at least I could put effort into keeping them entertained. From tomorrow I'm theoretically going to be working all day.. though I imagine in reality I'll be getting interrupted by the kids all day.
It might even be enough to make me take the trek to the office.. if it wasn't 38 degrees outside!

I learned during Covid that trying to work from home with a bored and needy child is maddening. We’ve got the 8 year old at a couple of different 1 week holiday clubs, a week with my mum, and each of the parents have a different week off. But there’s still a few days of attempted home working with her around that I’m not looking forward to.

I've only got about 7 weeks of it. I tried finding holiday clubs, but they don't really seem to be a thing here. Or if they are then I couldn't find them.
