Crap. You know when you are enjoying the wine, sorting a Sunday Roast and idly browsing the net.....
... and then you check your emails and find order acknowledgements for a CPU, a GPU, a PSU, RAM and a case??
Yup, one of those evenings...

Been giving a few thoughts to potentially (finally) upgrading my gaming PC. My old 8700k (OC'd to 4.9Ghz) and 1080TI have served me very well -- the latter perhaps being the single best component I've ever invested in. Still play most games at 1440p at a mixture of mid-high settings, and it continues to punch above its weight in most situations. The (admittedly fairly unique, for now) situation with Alan Wake 2's shader requirements, however, has got me considering viable upgrade paths etc. Need to balance this finance wise, though, as most of my disposable income is being spent on renovations to our house.
So, for now, I'm perhaps looking at a Mobo/CPU upgrade (hopefully being able to repurpose the current AIO cooler, and sticking with my current 32GB 3200MHz DDR4 for the foreseeable) with a more sizeable GPU investment at some point down the line. Thoughts on a Z790 coupled with a i5 13600k? Various deals and Black Friday stuff around, suggests I can get that here (France) for the equivalent of £500. I'm a little concerned about the current cooler (Kraken x62, 280mm), as reviews seem to suggest the i5 runs very hot, but replacing that would add yet another couple of hundred to things (unless I went air cooling, I suppose), let alone probably necessitate a larger case if I wanted to go 360mm.
Appreciate "future-proofing" is a bit of a nebulous concept re: PC builds these days, but was wondering if the above coupled with a 4x series or equivalent down the line might see me through for the next few years? What do you more knowledgeable chaps think?

If you have the receipt for the X62 you can get a new bracket from NZXT that fits AM5 motherboards. If future proofing is a concern I’d go for AMD this time around.

Yeah, I'd need a bracket for the x62 for the LGA1700 socket anyway (c. €20). Never used AMD before, so likely to stick to Intel purely out of habit: what would the benefits of switching be, in your opinion?

7800X3D is about as fast/sometimes faster than a 13900K in games, gives off 1/3rd of the heat, and AMD's track record is that they keep supporting the same socket for years.

An alternative plan, for now, could be just to pick up a 4070 with the current setup, I guess (apparently get a free copy of Alan Wake 2 lol). Would mean far less effort overall, and I could always return if not entirely satisfied. At 1440p, I imagine any CPU bottleneck wouldn't necessarily be too egregious either?
Now that I've already noticed DDR5 dropping in price, I'm now hesitant to commit to a new DDR4 Mobo ... Hmmm, decisions decisions.

I've just gone with a brand new build - and switched to AMD - just awaiting arrival of the CPU before I start to make a fraught and potentially very sweary first attempt at self-building!
7800x3D, b650M ProRS wifi, 32gb DDR5 6000/cl30, RTX4070, NXZT H5 Flow
Mainly for MSFS2020 but quite a few recent games that simply didn't run well or at all on my i5-6600/gtx1070 set up. 7 years was a good innings.
Hoping for some improvement.

Hoping for some improvement. As I always say about building a PC, the only bit that will likely get you swearing is connecting the front panel LEDs. Those things are a right bitch to get in right! For the most part though, things should just slot in quite nicely. Obviously, be careful with handling the components, remembering to ground yourself and the like. It is fairly idiot proof though (the fact I've been able to do it should be evidence enough of that). One thing to watch out for is slotting RAM in, if you haven't done it before. They can be a bit fiddly to squarely place and may need a little more force than you expect. Also, don't be too shy about the thermal paste for the processor. As long as it isn't spilling out the sides, you don't need to particularly worry about over doing it. Enjoy!

I notice the cooler comes with pre-applied paste (Noctua) so maybe that is one less thing to worry about.

I sold my LG 38" ultrawide monitor at the weekend for no real reason than I could get about £600 for it and an LG 42" C3 was only £740 through work. It arrives next week some time, it'll be interesting to see if I miss the ultrawideness and if I like the OLEDness. I have a 55" C8 OLED in the living room, but I'm quite excited to see what my favourite PC games look like on one. Also it'll force me to upgrade my 3080Ti at some point, now I'm having to push 4k. Poor future me.

So.... my first PC build has, touch wood, been relatively painless.
All POSTed OK. Tweaked the RAM to 6000 and Win 11 is installed.
Need to install GPU drivers next but so far, so good.

Amazon delivered a WD_Black package to my house yesterday ... minus a NVME drive. Some theiving cunt has stripped it from the box. Needless to say a frustrated call to Amazon CS occurred minutes later. She clearly didn't have a clue what it was and couldn't mentally process that it was missibg but no damage to the box. They were very quick to jump straight to refund. Makes me think lots of customers just claim shit is missing so they get it free. No thanks, I want the drive not a refund I said to a bemused lady ... you want another one? No I don't want another one, I didn't get this one FFS. Another has been ordered and appare tly should be delivered today though it's showing as 18-19. I'll be calling shortly to see if I can get it sooner. My new i7 from Amazon was delivered today. Except it was the packaging with a cut down the side (it was a foldy envelope so not obvious until properly opened) and a couple of fucking small table leg things in there instead to give it some weight. Can't even get replacement for some reason, refund only. Once I send the worthless envelope and table legs back to them. ARGH. Fucking ordered it off Ebuyer now as they had the same black friday deal, and are presumably not thieving scrotes.

I know somebody from work that it happened to as well with a large SSD. I'm surprised you're having to send anything back though, I didn't.

Poor future me. Keep us updated plz Well it arrived this afternoon. Easy to setup, took about 15 minutes to unbox it and attach the legs. It doesn't feel too huge coming from my 38" UW, and considering my desk is only 50 cm, it's not too eye-strainy! Took half an hour to set up my SDR and HDR modes. It's so much sharper than my old monitor, the jump from 3840x1600 to full 4k is surprisingly vast. The big difference is obviously in colour reproduction, black levels and viewing angles. It's really, really impressive and so far my 3080Ti is doing a great job - still getting 100fps in Forza Horizon 5. I've just started Baldurs Gate 3 (I know, I caved after realising it's never going to come down in price) and it's genuinely stunningly sharp in the close-up cutscenes. What's struck me is how much better it is for watching TV/YouTube, just because it's 16:9 and I don't have to put up with any black bars in cutscenes or loading screens either. Will keep you posted if my feelings change, but so far I'm very happy with the change!

Seems that scalpers are back for 4090 cards as the price has sky rocketed up to over $2k.
Scalpers are ever trying to fleece China as they're super desperate to get hold of them.
AI man .. what a fucking money sink

A) the return to amazon of the fucking table legs somehow got lost in their fulfillment centre so they still haven't refunded me. Finally assembled all the new parts yesterday. Everything worked wonderfully. Re-installed Windows, updated everything, rebooted etc. All going fine. Play Dwarf Fortress for 4 hours then reboot again and nothing. Not a clue if it's the mobo or the PSU, no leds come on nothing. I've never seen this before. So all the fucking new parts are at the local computer repair shop for the next 3-5 days. I'm actually cursed

No power at all would likely point to the PSU, although I guess the mobo could be completely busted.
Remember one time having a PSU blow on me in the first 24 hours. Think I had just had a hard crash and thought I would take a look inside to make sure everything was all hooked up and nothing had come loose. Switched the PSU off before going in and then switched it back on once all seemed fine. Second I flipped the switch there was a big pop sound from it. Gave me a massive jump and freaked me out for a moment, considering the amount of power that run through those things.

But I've never seen a PSU go without the pop or a funky burning smell

The other advantage the 7800X3D has is that all the cores are the same so you don't run into the efficiency/performance core software problems and can just let it do its thing.

Even though my PC is less accessible than I would like I have pondered upgrades (RTX4k supers are a possibility along with new mobo and cpu). Been looking at arricles about the new 12v power connectors, are they adaptable (safely) to older PSUs or will I need a new one of those too? (Antec trupower 720 is what I have IIRC, fairly old)

And those tightly packed components will mean a high thermal footprint.

And those tightly packed components will mean a high thermal footprint. Though counter to that so many of the components are exposed I'd be more worried about everything getting full of dust / cat hair / spilled tea.
