I read this thread pretty regulalry, but haven't had any update news to contribute. File this one definiately under "well, duh, physics", but I upgraded my case from a mini cube Corsair case to an iCUE RGB 5000X, and the 25 degrees difference in temps has really done wonders for my performance. Found an extra 10 fps in Cyberpunk and FF14 almost never dips below 60 now, even in Limsa.

Windows 11 keeps giving me a choice at boot because I apparently didn’t format a drive completely and now it thinks I have 2 windows installs on there. Should I just nuke the recovery partition on that old drive? Bump for the morning crew.

Reinstall is simple this days including reinstalling games with cloud save systems.

Can you still remove a dual boot from msconfig? Been a long time but I vaguely remember a tab called startup or boot that allowed you to select a default or delete an entry altogether.

Yeah, that used to be somewhere in computer properties IIRC. Last few times I've had to do anything like that involved a command prompt and bcdedit, though.

Drive is completely empty, it's my previous C:\ , I formatted it using the Win11 installation utility. So format it again using Disk Managment then?

Win11 seems alright. They do continue with their tactic of having multiple layers of settings menus. The new right-click menu sucks, but apparently there's just a registry key to change it back.
Did my first test flight in flight sim vr on the new system, very happy right now. Only weirdness with this AM5 system is a rather long boot time, it seems to do some ram training every time it boots.

Yeah, the below should sort that out. Think you'll need to restart the explorer process or just restart the PC for it to kick in.
reg add HKCU\Software\Classes\CLSID\{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}\InprocServer32 /ve /d "" /f
I still find the menus a bit sluggish in W11 compared to W10, but that's about the only real annoyance I have with it now. It seems much better today compared to the fairly ropey first release.
I'm really regretting not going for the 5800X3D instead of the 5900X now. At the time I thought I'd make more use of loads of cores, but I've barely touched virtualisation etc since building it. Might have to go through the faff of selling a CPU with extremely fragile pins.

My quest to get rid of that "which windows do you want to start" screen at boot has resulted in a system that doesn't boot anymore. Did a clean of what I'm pretty fucking sure was the correct drive using diskpart, launched from terminal in recovery mode.

Your boot uefi partition is misconfigured I'd guess.

I can see my 2TB drive with windows on it when I boot using recovery. I think indeed my uefi partition was on that second drive which I wiped.

Aaand back online, had to shrink the new drive a little so I could create an EFI partition on there, then bcdboot e:\windows fixed it. Learned a lot about diskpart in the last 24h.

So my guess is, the old drive still had an EFI partition on it, even though I formatted it. Kind of dumb that if you do a fresh install of Win11 it keeps using an EFI partition on a secondary drive.

The selection of which uefi to use at boot time is selected by the bios.
I think windows install just reconfigures the Uefi partition wherever it finds it. But it *only" does this at install time. So if another filesystem with a bootable windows system exists, it'll configure that as an option which will persist even if you delete the partition it relates to
I really like rEFIind, which is an open source UEFI compatible bootloader. It's self contained and automatically reconfigures itself according to what it finds lying around on your various storage devices at run time, and gives you a menu and a sensible default. Everything else, GRUB or windows bootloader seems to shit the bed if you change anything and don't explicitly reconfigure them

Didn’t a format at one point mean you completely wiped a drive, including all partitions?

You format partitions, normally. Formatting one partition will leave the other partitions unaffected.
E.g. formatting the C: drive just formats the partition that the OS calls "the C: drive"
I guess it's a bit of a hangover from ye olde days when most drives only had one partition.

Finally a decent bundle on the 40 series cards. www.nvidia.com/en-gb/geforce/news/diablo-iv-geforce-rtx-40-series-bundle/Still would like to see a discount on those 4080s though. Overclockers still have one listed at £1,099 (says pre-order, with no indication of when it is actually out), but I'm holding out, hoping we might see one for less than a grand. Would probably be an odd time to spend that kind of money on a GPU, when I'm currently playing Tie Fighter.

So Nvidia announced the 4060ti in two varieties and the 4060. I'm amazed that they're offering an 8gb version. So it's 499 for the 16gb version, 399 for the 8gb version and 299 for the 8gb normal 4060.
Are they just greedy as fuck at this point?

What's the thought process with putting more ram on one of the *60 variants? They did this with the 30 series too.

The 4070ti has less VRAM than the 4060ti (12GB Vs 16GB)? Is that right? That makes zero sense.
Personally, I wouldn't be interested in anything less than 16GB right now. They shouldn't even be releasing 8GB cards if they are to be considered mid+ range of gaming GPU.
Nvidia really have fucked up with this series of cards.

Exactly. I don't know what the reason for it is. If they hadn't done it with the 3060 it would look seemingly like a knee jerk reaction to the current VRAM climate.
Big standard 3060 had 12gb whereas the 3060ti had 8gb.
Is it a speed thing?

It’s apple’s price ladder. You start looking at a product, it’s a bit low in memory though, so you start considering a more expensive version. But look, one model up doesn’t seem that crazy all of a sudden. But it’s a bit low in memory.

4060 TI 8GB is getting railed by anybody that's tested it. It can't keep up at 4k with the 3060.

They probably would've tried to sell it as a 3070 too if they'd gotten away with the 3080 shitshow.
Feels like they're constantly seeing how much they can get away with this time.

They are trying to get away with as much as possible, but are they getting away with it or not? Seems pretty much all releases have been met with derision. Reviews have at least said the prices are far too high, even if they have been liking the performance (although many have given a kicking on the performance side too) and comments underneath often seem to say the reviews aren't being hard enough on them. Any word I hear about sales seems to consistently be they are far below where we should be presuming Nvidia wants them, with stock of all cards bar the 4090 just sitting on shelves.
Yet, Nvidia seem to just be plowing ahead with it all with their fingers in their ears. The only slightly backtrack was on the cheaper 4080 being pulled and re-released as a 4070Ti.
Are they going to make a course correction or are they just going to wait it out until the 50 series? Maybe we will be seeing a Super version of the 40 series, much like they did with the 20 series.

EVGA seemingly read the room wisely and decided to have nothing to do with this. I do wonder if more will follow.

The 4070 is essentially a 4060ti isn't it?
