Apart from the 4090 all other Nvidia cards are pretty pointless this gen. The 4070 is basically 4060 and so on. I imagine they've got a bucket load of inventory sitting around and the next round of cards can't come soon enough.

Looks like we'll have a bunch of RT mods pretty soon.

Wasn't there some remix toolkit demoed alongside the 40 series (or maybe the 30, I can't remember) where they showed of an RTX version of morrowwind?
Having AAA Devs put RTX in their games is alright but the quickest way to ramp interest in anything is to put it in the hands of communities/modders and let them stick it on all sorts of shit.

I guess it's just because that is a Valve/Half-Life/Source Twitter account, but I'm assuming the way the tweet only mentions Source games doesn't mean it only will work with Source games. That would limit the pool of games somewhat. Not sure how excited I would be about being able to finally play Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines with path tracing...
There isn't any mention of it just being Source on the Git page, so assume it will be for other games too.
The last tweet in the thread mentions the RTX Remix Creator Toolkit, which will do the AI remastering of assets. Just says it is coming later.

So I was thinking about doing a self build but then I read things like 'Bios flashing' and my mind goes blank. I had assumed it was more a case of electronics Lego and just putting the right things in the right place! Is updating the Bios and other parts a pain in the backside on a self build? I built my son a PC a year or two back and that involved flashing the BIOS. I've never built a PC before but it was all fine. Just do some diligent research and have it planned out in steps and you'll have few issues. My one take away is don't get a compact case if you have large hands!

Those HL2 RTX screenshots actually do look rather gorgeous. Maybe there is a level of old graphical fidelity at which RTX brings more than just novel enhancement. Like Q2 RTX was fun but a jarring mashup of old and new.

HL2 was the advent of shaders wasn't it or was it transform and lighting which improved the look of games going forwards. Maybe anything from that era onwards will benefit more from a remix.

My main problem with Q2 RTX was that it looked nothing like the original. I know many people didn't like the red hue, but I thought it was atmospheric.

You can see where they've cut costs (especially the CPU cooler being an own brand, the DRAM-less SSD and the 750W PSU) but if you need it then I think that's fine, especially if it's for work and you can try and convince them to pay for part of it. Out of the machines in that range, I think that's probably the best one, the 13700KF is a great chip.
I think you've just missed the cutoff for tomorrow though.

I have some drives from my old PC I can install in the event the SSD is really bad.

It won't be a steaming pile of shit, just not as spicy as something like an SN850X. They're pretty much Intel drives in everything but name now, and would be perfect for loading games from.

Yeah, it's owned by SK Hynix so it'll work fine and in games, with just one exception for now, anything faster than a decent SATA isn't going to actually make any difference. If you want to go full bore with DirectStorage later once the support appears you've got another two M.2 slots to expand and it's a better option than the 1TB 980 and the 2TB of spinning rust in the next one up, which just seems like a worse deal unless you REALLY want Wifi on the motherboard.
Same with the PSU - decent brand and from what I can see the RM750e is a good power supply, and even that cooler is just an OEM one so I'm guessing it's the usual Asetek deal like you get in most Corsair and NZXT ones so it'll work well. If I was building myself I'd probably go a little higher on those as well.

It's a shame the game giveaways with the 40 cards are so shit at the moment. Overwatch 2 battlepass ffs

They are shit. It was Redfall a month or so back. Hoped they might backdate it but nope!
Got fuck all my 4090. I like a nice cheeky free game

Got Control with my 2080 Super, which was a great combo. It also came with the less interesting Wolfenstein Young Blood, which I still haven't actually played.
Always nice to deduct an extra £40-50 to the price of the card, if the game was something you were going to buy anyway. I think if there had of been a good freebie or two with the 40-series, I may well have caved on that £1099 deal on a 4080 I posted on here a few days ago.

Is the 750w PSU enough?
I'm skipping over that fact that it's not an ATX3 PSU so doesn't have a dedicated 12VHPWR connector for the 4070ti l, but going on what I had in my box, 4090 and a 3700x the 750 was tight with an AIO, ram, storage and fans, the 750w PSU was a tall order. It developed a lovely coil whine when it put it under gaming load and I had the GPU undervolted to reduce draw and temp. Going to a bigger CPU 5800x3d meant I needed a PSU upgrade to a 1000w
Youve spec'd a very similar setup with a more power hungry CPU (don't think the GPU will draw as much though). I've put the bits into partpicker and with just the board, CPU, ram GPU and 2 X SSDs its at an estimated 653w. I haven't added the aio, or any fans into it so expect it to be a bit higher. That doesn't leave much headroom.

PSUs aren’t like car engines, running them at their rated power is actually more efficient. The headroom for power spikes is already build in on top of their nominal rating.

I know that running them above 50% is more efficient but I've always worked on the general rule that you work out your peak draw and stick 150 on top. At peak this is going to be at least +/- 87% of rated capacity

Parts for my 7800x3d system should be arriving on Monday. Was thinking it might be a good time to switch to Win11, should I update my old system to 11 first or will my current login just work?

Not sure whether upgrading first or not really matters, but worth noting there are few hoops you need to go through either way. I assume you are upgrading the motherboard, so it will definitely be seen by Windows as a new system. www.howtogeek.com/444351/how-to-reactivate-windows-10-after-a-hardware-change/That's for Windows 10, but the process is much the same for 11, if you do upgrade Windows first. I ended up getting my version locked when I last upgraded my mobo. I called Microsoft, but they refused to help as I no longer had the product key from when I bought the license through uni about 13-14 years previously. Ended up activating through dubious means, but eventually caved and picked up another legitimate copy for an extortionate amount.

I upgraded my 3900X to a 5800X3D yesterday. First time I've done an in-place CPU upgrade and it went very smoothly.
Genuinely surprised at how much extra performance I'm getting: I was expecting things like Borderlands 3 to be a lot better because that's in all the reviews but in terms of the kind of game I actually play it's massive. Nightmare Reaper, a game which I had a fair bit of trouble with (down as low as the 40s in really busy scenes), was perfectly smooth when I tried it. Very complex stuff in GZDoom like the demo of Selaco which would basically dive down to 30 when stuff exploded keeps everything over 100 even when it's getting heated. Most of all though, I had Vampire Survivors stay at around 15-20fps at minute 29 on my deliberately screen-melting build - the same on my 3900X, even with the new engine, was maybe 3-4. VS clones really benefit too once action gets up there; I don't think I've seen Time Wasters drop significantly below the 172 limit I have on RTSS once.
In terms of stuff that improved less, the newest Koei Tecmo games don't quite get to 120 yet (Stranger of Paradise is close enough that it's worth setting it, I think, but Atelier Ryza 3 is nowhere near and ends up very stuttery still), though I was very surprised to see Nioh 2 finally reach 120 on the options menu - even the PS5 doesn't get much above 30 on that screen, so anything older is really nicely improved. Switch emulation didn't seem that much better, though fiddling with Vsync I did manage to coerce a more solid 60fps out of SMTV and Fire Emblem Warriors 2. Diablo 3 back on PC seemed to stutter less, though that might be placebo.
In the end, I bit because of a drop to £280 but seeing this improvement I'd have felt satisfied at the original 450 quid price. I'm really happy with it, and recommend it highly to anyone on Zen 2 with a faster graphics card like a 3080.

I've had good luck so far, seeing how I started with a naughty version of Win7 pro that was made official when they were pushing everyone to Win10. Thanks for the heads-up, think I'll start with Windows 10 just to play it safe(r).

Bargain really for the cost

Had a bit of a google, but might as well ask here, no way to back up my 250GB ms flight sim install? It’s a bit of a weird one as I’ve bought it on Steam but it actually downloads from the windows store. I can see my ISP complaining that my unlimited internet account is in fact not unlimited at all.

Is it still managed through steam? If so are you able to go into it's settings and move it to another storage device?

ROG Strix naturally. Should pair well with the 4090 in terms of flammability then?

Windows 11 keeps giving me a choice at boot because I apparently didn’t format a drive completely and now it thinks I have 2 windows installs on there. Should I just nuke the recovery partition on that old drive?
