I don't really get this whole Stand up does Tran stuff. Sure there's the odd outspoken trans person, but really how many trans people has everyone seen in the last year. Could probably count them on one hand. Why is it such a hot hot hot topic? I'd say these kinda 'comedians' are just doing it to get a rise out of liberals or whatever. I doubt it is to incite a war against trans people, unlike JKR. But who knows.

So I watched some of the Gervais special last night. I'm a big believer in actually watching something before being critical of it. Nothing worse than going all BAN THIS SICK FILTH without actually having watched the thing.
There's about two minutes of trans material at the start, prefaced by a bit about irony and being aware that as a comedian he's likely to say stuff he doesn't mean to get a laugh, but that hopefully the audience are smart enough to get it, but that also some people will laugh non ironically.
It's obviously not as clever as he thinks it is, but it's a pretty throwaway bit I'd say, in the scheme of the whole show. And it's used to make a point about how no one could have seen the idea that women don't have penises being a controversial opinion ten years ago and how basically everyone will say something or has said something that in the future will be considered outdated.
I do agree that a lot of his comedy is lazy and outdated and his best days are behind him, but I'm not sure he's the monster that social media furore would like everyone to believe. Plus I do believe he is a bit of an antagonist and will say things for a reaction, with irony.
But I guess everyone will just see what they want to see, me included.

My dislike of Gervais good beyond the trans stuff, I just think he's a crap stand-up and a bit of a hack.
He can be an okay writer and actor, but his stand up has often been a bit crap regardless of what easy target or cheap point he's making.
The smug dick.

The problem with stand up comedy is that the line between a performance being an act and just being themselves is very loose at times. It's like when Johnny Vegas is on a panel show with people that haven't seen his act, you can see the worry in their faces.
But as soon as a comedian is defending controversial views when clearly not in character, that's when it's obvious it's not an act and they're just being an asshole. Al Murray's Pub Landlord wouldn't be as funny if Murray actually held those views, for example.

Technically, Hitler never hit anyone. Pretty sure he used to be in street fights in the 20s, and he was a soldier in World War I.

The main problem with Ricky Gervais' Netflix thing is that it just isn't really funny
He's still going on about being rich, which is really old now. And wheeling out Twitter exchanges is lazy as fuck
