The anti wokester's are now mad at...localisation?
I've seen it with Unicorn Overlord. People mad it's not a direct one to one translation. The localisation follows the kind of style of dialogue you see in FF Tactics or Tactics Ogre, where language can be quite flowery. It's not like that in the Japanese version I believe, plus some instances where some characters come off more abrupt in the English script compared to Japanese. But the differences are so minute, its not worth the anger. I don't think people realise localisation is not just translation but also changing script so that Japanese turns of phrase make sense to a Western audience. But ask these people and they would insist a direct one to one translation is the only way to go.
Plus, every localiser is a filthy communist sneaking their woke propaganda into games don't you know? Only a recent thing too...same thing about Granblue Fantasy that came out earlier. Accusing the localisers of poisoning the script. But then the devs show the localisation team works in house in the devs HQ. I also don't think these people realise any changes need approval from devs too, it's not like localisers have carte blanche to do what they want.

Yeah, I'm listening to the Japanese with English subtitles in Unicorn Overlord, and there's multiple times where the English translation is a lot... fancier than the Japanese audio. So you get the English which says something like "I can't believe those bestial malcontents betrayed me!", while the literal Japanese just says "Those bastards!"
Which isn't a problem or anything, it's just a difference between the languages that go beyond the literal meaning of words and phrases.

It's also typical of the genre and setting popularised by FF Tactics and Tactics Ogre. I enjoy it. Or rather...the stirring performance rouses a feeling of content within my soul.

If they're that unhappy about it, they can play it in the original language. Of course that'd require actual effort, rather than scanning the screen with Google Lens and pretending to know anything at all.

Which isn't a problem or anything, it's just a difference between the languages that go beyond the literal meaning of words and phrases. Not played that particular game, but in general Japanese tends to be much shorter than English. Grammatically, more parts can be dropped, and also a lot more tends to be context based. Plus English has a lot more idiomatic phrases, which tend to be longer than they need to be, even in English.
I'm often doing it the other way, watching Western movies and there are Japanese subtitles at the bottom. And the English dialogue will be some long sentences and the subtitles will just be バカ!
Anyone getting upset about people putting effort into localization is a moron who doesn't remember the days when games and movies got nonsensical English subtitles or translations that were usually attempts at literal translation that just didn't make sense.

'All your base are belong to us!'
Seriously though, I loved the Ace Attorney games, but I imagine without effort put into localisation, they wouldn't have been very funny, witty or charming if a direct one to one translation was used.

Christ that Twitter thread. Weebs are so fucking weird. I honestly wonder how many of them actually understand Japanese culture and its history that isn't just through anime and hentai.

Honestly, I'd say that most things that people get upset about these days, are not things worth getting upset about. Particularly internet things.

Instagram has started showing me previews of Threads posts recently and they’re all the most inconsequential “problems” or morally absolutist lecturing. Makes me pleased I’ve largely abandoned ‘public’ social media.

My favourite has been people who hinge their on-line identity to a very specific mast, usually political and get found out as being total wrong uns. Who was that guy in Twitter, British, late 30s centrist dad guy with glasses who was popular around the late 2010s into early 2020s who was a bit of a panty sniffer IRL?

You're going to have to be more specific. Ha! He was a very front facing critc of the Tories who became Twitter famous, with some very obvious but on point criticisms of Tory policy, dad bod, glasses and a goatee. I think he had another account that was him being the opposite of everything he would put out there, more so in regards to being a bit of a sex pervert.

Warhammers woke now for suggesting some soldiers or whatever could be women. 40k has always had female soldiers. Even old world Warhammer had a few female warriors like Wood Elves. Age of Sigmar?
