It's so tiring seeing the same gender critical point being played out again and again, from right wing evangelical Christians, via the Daily Mail strawman generator and into the mouth of a so-called leftwing MP.
Self ID *requires* that a transwoman has been using female toilets before she can apply. Something which she could have already been merrily doing for decades. It's not a fucking passport that some sex-pest can get and then wave at the armed security who, as we know, are posted outside all women's loos up and down the country making sure no-one who passes the boundary has a willy.

God I feel so old. I don’t have any skin in the game (being a ruddy bloody bloke), but I can understand why a woman may feel uncomfortable about a genetically male person entering their toilets etc., even after transition. Does that make her ‘radical’? Potentially a touch exclusionary, but then you could argue not letting men in is exclusionary. But then no one balks at that.
However, broadcasting it unnecessarily as a public figure does seem …unwise.

Okay, but on the flip side, if we're going to demand people only use the toilets of the gender they were at birth, how would women feel about having to share spaces with Buck Angel. Plenty of trans men are more masculine than me.
And if your going to decide based on how well somebody (apologies for the icky phrase) "passes", how do you even judge that benchmark? How traditionally fem does somebody need to be to relieve themselves?
There have already been cases of butch or not-traditionally-fem cis women being accused of being trans.
And I honestly believe there is a much greater risk of a trans woman being subject to violence because she was forced into a men's pisser, or prison, or whatever, than there is of somebody identifying as a woman to get into a female bog in order to harass women. I mean you can walk in now anyway, it's not going to deter rapists.

Anyway yes, going full unisex is a terrible idea. But I'm still not convinced that trans women going into cis female bathrooms is an issue important enough for the level of discussion it creates. It feels like governments act on it because it pleases the culture warriors without making any actual difference.

It's becoming common for male prisoners to convince their psychiatrists that they want to be a woman and known as a woman, while either retaining a penis or stating that they intend to have surgery at a later date. If the psychiatrist decides they're genuine then they have to accommodate their wishes or it's an infraction of the prisoner's human rights to keep him in a male prison. As soon as he gets into the female prison of course, he assaults the female prisoners. |
