I think his views on it need to be taken in the context of how much him and the other pythons debated about censorship around the time of Life of Brian. Not that I'm saying this is the se thong before anyone wets their pants.

Not that I'm saying this is the se thong before anyone wets their pants. This is the thing I don’t really get. Yeah, the program might show something different but for someone who had his movie banned in several countries (including the U.K.) and received actual death threats about it, the thing that seems to bother him most is people not finding him funny on Twitter. And this is the crux of ‘wokism’ or ‘cancel culture’, really. If you released Life Of Brian now, nobody would care. Nobody has cancelled being funny or telling edgy jokes.

You can kind of see why he'd be hyper sensitive to any kind of attempted censorship of comedy after the shit they went through in the 70's though. It's definitely got to skew your perspective on stuff when you've been ostracised by an entire country for making some jokes about Jesus.

I think that criticism of things is a lot more visible now. And even if the correct thing to do is to ignore shit people say on social media (note: this is the correct thing to do), it *feels* worse because of how instantaneous it is. But like... deal with it. If you're a comedian who's going to make a living out of Saying What Everyone Else Is Too Scared To Say, then surely people getting mad about it is just going to be an occupational hazard. And there's probably a better response to it than whining about how everyone is being mean to you because of your jokes about pronouns. (I think Cleese did a Twitter about that recently) Comedians are allowed (and should be allowed) to be offensive. But others are allowed to respond to that by telling them to fuck off. It's the circle of life.

Hey, edgy comedians can't say anything these days, I know that because they keep telling me on their specials.

I think that if the modern internet had existed 30 (or more) years ago, we would have the exact same conversation about "oh, so I can't make jokes about Pakis now?! What's the world coming to?". Or whatever the non-PC thing was those days.
The boundaries of acceptable and unacceptable always change, and not always for the worse. Ideally people learn to adapt to it, instead of, you know, being a dick.

True, but he is posting all these jokes that people don’t like from his mansion in the Bahamas so my sympathy is pretty limited. I dunno. The doc may be completely different to what I imagine and he might have some kind of damascene revelation but he just comes off as another millionaire white guy who doesn’t like to be told ‘no’ and probably shouldn’t be on a forum where millions of can tell him to fuck off. Still this is probably a better way to channel your hurt ego than Graham Linnehan.

I should say, I really do like John Cleese. I always enjoy it when he just turns up on something and could listen to him just chuntering on for hours.
I just thing this particular thing of his is bullshit.

I don't mind Cleese. But him and Terry Gilliam have gone on a real "old man yells at cloud" bent over the last decade or so, and it's sometimes painful to watch.

Gilliam is worse. Similar complaints but Gilliam is less articulate and takes it just that bit further into proper 'ugh.... really?' territory. If he had the kind of platform Cleese has, he would be almost universally disliked by now.

Feels like this whole thing from Cleese is an over-reaction to UKTV pulling an episode of Fawlty Towers last year because of a racial slur. And they reinstated with with a warning at the beginning, it's not like it was "cancelled" indefinitely.
The article in the Guardian does make it sounds like he's capable of some nuance on the subject, but if he's still saying we shouldn't apply current standards to old, out-of-date viewpoints, screw that.

I'll give it a watch out of curiosity, but 5 quid says he has Lee Hurst or some other rank talking head kill any interest within 2 shows.

Sex thong. It's a staple accessory for the British Sex Arse Industry. Lisa Nandy made a record with that title - Thexth thong.

I would probably say the Cleese thing has a big of punching down/punching up thing about it. It's absolutely fine to be edgy and offensive in the name of comedy, but when you punch down, and a few people on twitter call you out about it, doubling down and then complaining about being "cancelled" is a little bit...ehhhh. Plus his current brand of humour seems a little desperate and "what's the deal with airline peanuts?" kind of shite.

Children's book 'The Tiger Who Came To Tea 'could lead to rape and harassment' because it reinforces gender inequality that causes violence against women, campaigner claims. Adamson questioned the tiger's gender and why he was not female or gender neutral.
The reality is its a children's book. If anything I'd say it sends out the wrong message about tigers being like a house cat.
