An MMA fight took place last night where a transgender woman won quite comfortably over another female fighter. The issue has come up again of unfair advantage, how it would ruin the sport and people weren't too comfortable with how easy it looked, using pics of the fighter before their transition.
It's always a messy one to have an opinion on, I try to avoid it because my opinion isn't fully formed. But generally I feel if it is one of those things you have to let happen as we push towards more inclusivity then so be it. But then I'm not a huge MMA fan. I didnt notice the same vitriol of a trans man competing in boxing and winning. Has to be acceptable both ways surely?

Today I learned that for about a week in 2010 a school district in California banned the dictionary from all its schools because it was too sexually explicit. How much more fucking moronic can the muricans get?

Further reading suggests that after it was reinstated they sent all students home with a permission slip asking parents to sign it if they were happy for their kids to use it, and provided alternatives for those that weren't. I going to stop googling now, it's just fucking depressing.

I'm no expert and don't even pretend to understand fully regards to HRT and other forms of treatment, but personally I don't think it's fair. I think in a perfect would it would be amazing to be be so inclusive, but especially in sport when fractions of a second matter, I just don't think it's fair. From muscle mass, to bone mass to differences in how male and female hearts work while under exercise, to even how the other way round female muscles are better at resisting fatigue. I think there's too many variables regardless of treatment for things to be entirely 100% fair. It's a difficult one though, I'd imagine if you took two athletes with exactly the same training, fitness levels and one had the skeletal frame or muscle mass of a male through being born a male, that would give an advantage. Should having a more inclusive society overturn total fair play.. You could argue it should. But if I'd been training all my life in a whatever sport, I'm not sure I'd agree. |

What about comparing the muscle mass and skeletal frame of a Jamaican sprinter or a Kenyan marathon runner? It’s a difficult topic because for the most part it posits gender as the main deciding factor of competitive genetics, when it’s just one of about a million different things, natural or otherwise, that offer an advantage to an individual in some way.

EDIT: Sorry, it's not quoting correctly. The phrase I was reacting to is: "But if I'd been training all my life in a whatever sport, I'm not sure I'd agree" I think that's the crux of it. We don't give the medals to whoever trained the most, we give it to whoever gets the result. So from my point of view it's the problem with sports in general (well, most anyway, some sports have no physical requirements). The whole idea of "let's see who is best at something that also hinges on biology" will always have these issues... No idea about solutions for it though... |

Really uncomfortable with it at the combat sport end of things, some studies have shown that a transitioned MtF athlete is *still* at an athletic advantage to a transitioned FtM, despite that persons testosterone supplements. I can understand the argument for inclusivity in a lot of sport, but ones where the objective is to separate your opponent from their consciousness or their limbs from their sockets is obviously unethical.

People are so quick to dismiss opinions by sticking people in a derogatory group/label these days, which immediately kills any discussion. If someone has an opinion you don't agree with, it's better to engage with it if you really care about the issue. A lot of the time it's just ignorance. See also anti-vax, gammon, etc
