True but it comes off a quite negative if you actually read it. I did read it - the "negatives" are quite silly, relating to the ageing patriarchy and the clunky grizzly Master Chief persona. It's a fucking Halo game. It honestly didn't read massively negatively to me, and had plenty of good to say about the environments, controls, the absurdity, and the grapple.

HALO A L O
Sounds pretty awesome. Had some leftover holiday so have booked off Wednesday to annoy my other half and sit in my pants and play it.
Sweet.

What I have enjoyed reading in some of the coverage is that the open world combat "cauldrons" are more Crysis than latter-day Far Cry, which is music to my ears. I could play levels like that all day long and still want more. Story sounds as wank as always, visuals are OK but not spectacular, but the combat sounds bang on. Sadly I won't get a chance to play it much on release, but hopefully can find time over Christmas.
Importantly, it sounds nothing like Halo 5 which I only got around to playing this year and thought it was fucking bobbins.

First world problem, but I'm trying to decide between PC and console for this one.
Although in fairness I'll probably be stuck into Destiny if the new activity is any good.

Even without the campaign, infinite is already this year's best shooter after the utter shitshow that is battlefield and the general meh of this year's cod.
I'm looking forward to getting stuck into the campaign though and it will help me get a handle on some different weapons for multiplayer too.

It would be, but that suggests a single global release time.
Booooooo.

Yeah I've skimmed through three and very positive. Pretty much saying it's close to greatness with a few stupid things holding it back. Weird, the ones I’ve seen have said that it’s nowhere near great - poor story and characters, openworld removes any memorable set-pieces and is repetitious in bad ways, but the sandbox is good and the combat remains fun. It’ll do for a freebie, and I’m looking forward to it, but it’s a shame that 343 are struggling to follow Bungie’s games. They keep resetting with each title rather than building on the last. I've read LOADS of reviews from respected sites this morning and didn't find even one implying "it's nowhere near great" or that it doesn't come close to the Bungie games? In fact there's a few reviews that put it up with the Bungie classics. Think it's averaging 87 on Metacritic. Good index of reviews, www.resetera.com/threads/halo-infinite-review-thread.523896/can't see how you could see all these superlatives and come away with the impression reviews are saying "it's nowhere near great" - unless you've only read the minority of the most critical reviews.

I’m sure it’s good, and the mid-80s average suggests so. The combat loop is the most important part and it’s there, but there’s still a fair few criticisms of the campaign in isolation from the total package of MP.

How does it fit into the extended haloverse?

We're debating something that's totally subjective of course, but I don't know how an aggregate review score of 87% can come across as "nowhere near great".

But also... a score of 87% isn't "great" either.
It's more like "generally pretty good"

Generally pretty good is surely more like a 7?

Obviously I haven't played it, but the animations of the enemies and marines still look Halo 1 levels of potato.
No new moves for the elites, grunts etc in almost 20 years I still think is poor. With so many new tools to play with, do the same with the enemies.
That said, ass temps are currently hot to the touch. Halo hasn't done that in years, so they're doing something right.

How big is the download size on PC, incidentally? The MP is currently sitting on my SSD at c.26GB, but I'm assuming the campaign has a boatload of additional assets?

26GB + 7GB high res textures for me (didn't have MP installed)

I'll admit to being disappointed we're back to fighting the Covenant. But I guess that's what the franchise is really about and at the end of the day, I'm really happy there's a really good new Halo game out in time for Xmas. I'd probably have replayed a couple of the older ones if not.

So essentially the campaign is somewhere but nowhere near great. Gotcha.

Because I wanted one and like some of them? It’s not hard.
I’ve not played it. It’s not my opinion. I read a couple of reviews and scanned some summaries. No-one I’ve seen has said it’s bad, they just didn’t think it was great. We’ll see I guess. Hopefully it’s amazing. I don’t care too much either way, it’s free, but I’m looking forward to playing it.
