I've been waiting for a decent price drop but my resolve is wearing thin, + I have a day off tomorrow with a returnal-shaped hole in it.

I took a break at that point before the update. All I’ll say is you don’t need to do biome 2 again, just rinsing through 1 should be enough. That section is definitely the hardest in the game though, biome 3 can seriously fuck you up. Alternatively, go straight to Biome 2 - the beginning is doable with a pistol, rinse the first half. If it goes well you can skip the mountain, otherwise make your way up for better gear. It is also amazing how powerful you can get if you play around with the curse based stuff.

I've seen disc copies going on eBay for around the £40 mark. Well worth it for that price. The controls are just so tight and satisfying once you get into the groove. My GOTY, no question.

Keep moving and be aggressive. Don't forget your melee.

Turn on perma-sprint and remap jump to L1. Works for me.

Don't get too hung up on dying. It's designed that way. Just go straight back in for another run.

Turn on perma-sprint and remap jump to L1. Works for me. I tried L1 to jump, my brain just couldn't do it. I did get into the habit of not aiming down sights though. That was a game changer.

Im not much of a bumper jumper, either but since you use dash equally as much as jump, youre fingers are usually hanging around the face buttons anyway so I dont think its a big deal.
But, yes, do turn on autosprint.

I kept my default jump and just remapped my dash to the O button. Works for me. And, yes, autosprint on invaluable.

Went back to trying to defeat Nemesis. My session a couple of nights ago went much the same as my previous ones, although I was now confident in clearing phase 1 without taking a hit and could avoid all attacks in phase 2, albeit not 100% of the time. Phase 3 I just couldn't get to grips with and it was taking me so long to grind through biome 1, as well as regularly dying on route to the Nemesis, that it remained quite frustrating. Last night felt as if it was going to go much the same way. I even had one moment in which I had a malfunction right at the start that prevented me from increasing proficiency. The only fix for it was to pick up 1 parasite. I had to go pretty much all the way through the biome before I could find even 1 parasite (it was in the secret room with lots of purple plant things). My first battle with Nemesis showed that the rocket launcher was great against phase 1 and 2, but I didn't get much out of it in the last phase. I also struggled still to really get a feel for the correct way to tackle this phase. I was generally just pushing forward on the platforms, but once I got close it was really hard to avoid the attacks. It was only right at the end that I worked out that sometimes it was good to not be on a platform. On my second fight with him in the evening I started to use that knowledge from the start and I was actually whittling him done quite effectively. I took quite a few hits though and was low on health. I landed the killing blow, just as he landed one one me... Good thing I had the astronaut figurine or I would have been really pissed! So, finally able to make progress now and feel like I can get back to actually enjoying the game.

Been playing this over the past week and absolutely loving it. The feel of the movement and shooting is just so satisfying!
I’m really liking the sense of mystery and dread from the audio logs and environments.
It is tough though, and I’m very glad for the suspend function as I would never have been able to play this without it.
The first boss took about 4 attempts, but was pretty easy by the time I finally beat him. Practice and just learning his patterns definitely helped a lot and I never even used the Astronaut I had taken along! Sadly I made some silly mistakes in the second Biome but got several rooms into the Mountain before I died, so feel much better prepared for my next run.
Really great game.

I finally got this today, and even from just a couple of hours can see I should have done it a long time ago. I'm sure it's been said before, but the map gives me serious Metroid Prime vibes in a very fucking good way.

Finished this today and now just mopping up secrets. But wow, this game just keeps giving, It’s still throwing new items and situations at me. Hands down best PS5 for me, and you really do get out what you put in.

Enjoying this, but I can't help but feel that the bullet hell aspect of the game is quite oversold. Up until biome 5 there's rarely been much in the way of bullet hell outside of the bosses, which have consistently been the easiest part of the game so far. Bullet hell in 3D just seems to mean that everything just kinda... misses you.
Instead most damage comes from movement mishaps: dodging off the edge, dodging into a wall, etc etc. Or, from non bullet hell attacks - enemies teleporting behind you and meleeing you, the drones starting an attack from behind cover and strafing out and hitting you because you didn't have time to react. My last run ended in a challenge room in zone 5 mainly as there were 2 quite melee heavy enemies at once that had large health pools and dodging one's melee attack usually meant getting hit by the other's while the dodge is on cooldown.
It's fun enough though.
Also the shotgun weapon is utter wank.

Made it to the third biome on this (feels like I’ve been going a while but to be fair I didn’t get much chance to play it over Christmas as it’s not the sort of game that lends itself to short bursts).
The 2nd Biome boss wasn’t too bad at all and went down first try (well, with an Astronaut but I think that still counts). I thought the actual getting there was often harder than the boss himself. The bosses do give me that Souls-like sense of exhilaration when they go down. A sort of joy-mixed-with-relief feeling that’s really special.
I had an interesting Parasite that healed me on Obolite collection, but prevented me using the Green health pickups. I think it worked pretty well and definitely promoted a “get stuck in there” attitude to the combat.
The third Biome is quite cool. I sadly got killed by a big Astronaut robot thing, but so far those have been the only really challenging enemy I’ve encountered.
Turned off after that, but I am now looking forward to going back to Biome 1 with the new toy you get from the second boss and see where I can explore!

I finished a run the other day and I think that honestly zone 1/4 are by far harder than anything else. 1 in particular because the enemies are more awkward in there. Those weird green tree like things are like, the hardest/most annoying common enemy in the game.

Those things are a easy if you just rush and melee them. This. Melee is really powerful in the first Biome. I find it’s also often the best way to take down those mini-boss orangey tentacle ones, as a good melee will usually stun them so you can get a few free hits in. You just need to watch out for other enemies shooting you in the back! I tend to find the teleporting baddies the hardest. Those smaller versions of the Biome 1 boss that occasionally appear in Biome 2 have a really annoying habit of teleporting behind you for a melee hit of their own. It’s avoidable if you know it’s coming (just dodge / run away) but that can be hard to do if you’re fighting a few enemies at once. Anyway - back to Biome 3! I’m not sure if it’s just my bad luck but the game seems to be putting the shortcut there a really long way into the first area…! I’m sure it wasn’t like this before…

The suicide bombing tie fighters with the homing rockets are hands down the biggest cunts in the game.

Just started on this, a couple of hours in and I'm really not very good at it!
It's obviously amazing and I am enjoying it but I have a feeling it's going to get the better of me.. admittedly I am getting a bit better now I'm using dash when the tougher gits arrive.

I reached Biome 6 a couple of times but stopped playing after that. Gone back to it a few times but it's not the sort of game I can jump in and out of because it feels like playing it for the first time again after a break. It's a game you have to play constantly but it's too frustrating for me to play a lot of.

Usual beginner tip: Turn on "always run". Takes a bit of getting used to, but is free speed in the end. Also, melee is stronger thank you might think. Remember that in 6 you can essentially "leg it" if you don't feel up to a particular encounter room.

The sword and rushing enemies is the tactic to use. Don't try and pick things off from far away.
