Killed Corrupted Monk last night and can now swim underwater! Kind of wish this was an earlier skill - I'm now trying to remember all the places with water to go back to and explore.
Also killed Lone Shadow Vilehand, and met Great Shinobi Owl who whupped me so went back to swimming exploring.

Owl father's by far the hardest IMO. Maybe Demon of Hatred's harder but it's also shit so meh.
Personally he's one I got through by being slightly less in his face than others. His thrust in both phases is very punishable.

To be fair you can head for Mibu village and the corrupted monk straight after you've killed the blazing bull. So technically you can get that skill quite early on.

My humble first run continues. Horse dude Gyoubu Oniwa down - I think I made a right meal of what is actually a pretty "easy" encounter. Anyways, got there in the end. Feels like a lot has opened up now. For example: there's a new vendor where I can buy something to cure the dragon rot. I hadn't bothered using the one I was given a few hours ago by the healer in the home base for fear that it was the only one. Is this something I should even care about? Just use it to get more Unseen Aid and then buy another one when the deaths start mounting up again? Now that I have DOUBLED MY ATTACK POWER from 1 to 2, I look forward to doing an additional 0.00008% on top of base damage, or whatever bullshit this actually resolves down to. I also ran into an angry dude with no head. I noped the fuck out of that after the second attempts.

Yeah you want to leave the headless the fuck alone for a LONG time.
That's what i do with the dragon rot. Leave it if I'm fighting somehting I know I'll die at a lot and then when I'm moving on and just making my way through the game I'll cure it.

Dragon rot stressed me out because I thought it would make NPCs die and I'd get a bad ending. I don't think that happens, you just can't progress NPC side quests until you cure it

Aaaaaand Lady Butterfly flutters no more. Must've taken ten attempts to get it all right today in a cheeky lunchtime Sekiro session. Annoyingly I had her to a sliver of health and posture twice before completely losing my mojo and needing another half dozen shitty attempts to get my eye back in. She felt not unlike a Bloodborne boss to me. All about the dodge and counter, with a cheeky shuriken to the face whenever she'd try to get her fly on. Overall Lady Butterfly was a really good encounter that sadly came down to whether or not I could corral her into a corner for a good pasting or not. I'm still firmly in the "thank fuck that's over" camp after the two bosses I've beaten so far. Not much elation or jubilation.

I found lady butterfly veeeeery hard first run. I think I didn't get it yet, as it she has really fast posture recovery. Minimum ten attempts I'd guess.
Now she Is one of the easiest bosses.

Yeah, I think I just lacked a perfect execution and had no strategy to avoid getting humped by the seeking butterfly missile things. On my victorious run all of that finally came together.
Onwards and upwards. Raging Bull (or whatever) went down first time, and Matsumoto who comes very soon after on the second time of asking (would've been first if I'd even realised he was a mini-boss and got in a cheeky stealth stabby first.
Made rapid progress over the rooftops and into the Upper Tower. Got utterly wrecked by an Elite near an idol so decided to go exploring. Accidentally found Genichiro. No healing left, half health, got wrecked. :-D
This is my decision point on Sekiro, I think - I was advised (in the Pigwhip thread) that if I could beat this dude it's sort of an apex. At that point one either "gets it" and probably loves it and powers through to the. end, or gives it a shrug and bins it. Not sure what side of that I'm gonna fall on, but it's moot until I can actually beat Genichiro, obvs. Bit of an annoying run from the Idol to get there, though!

Oh, maybe there's a way through the Dojo? Every time I've been in there so far the Elite has fucked me up. Perhaps I need to do that first. *gulp* OK then!

Nope, just explore everywhere in the castle you can get to before the boss fight. You'll find an idol that lets you get to the boss fight without enemies in the way
For what it's worth, you seem like you're getting the hang of it and I hope you do continue on with it to the end

Fark! Duffking wasn't kidding about easy win. I'd feel bad for reading the spoiler if I hadn't been rinsed half a dozen times or more at first. Right, Genichiro now. Can't even get to the end of the first phase yet, but I'm starting to learn the tells. And hoooo boy does this one punish you for daring to back off at all!

Yeah Genichiro is your lesson that most of the time, sticking close and trading attacks/parries is the best way to go.
For what it's worth apparently a lot of people don't notice, but when you're doing a string of attacks into an opponent's guard, listen to the sound of the sword chimes and if you hear one that sounds like when you do a parry, that's when to stop attacking.

Or just watch the animation and you will see which one is a parry But yes when they parry you stop attacking and be ready to make your parry

Only had a short blast this morning - I can reliably get one deathblow in, but despite not much changing in his attack patterns I shit myself before I can get the final deathblow in.
So far it's a less interesting encounter than Lady Butterfly, but in common with that it definitely feels doable once I've earned the muscle memory for when to press the offensive and when to take it easy. Discovered with a button spamming accident that he doesn't like Firecrackers, too, so that at least is helpful.
Hopefully I'll get some time tomorrow for another crack at him.

Firecrackers are actually surprisingly useful against most bosses.

Bloody hell, I was shaking after this. You can tell I start to get total claw hand at the end as I keep crouching by mistake and started to do a mortal draw without meaning to. Still. The prick's dead:

The prick's dead: Lovely job there Wunty, you nailed all the Mikiri counters during the fight as far as I could tell, great timing! You weren't wrong about the end either, that got a bit bum clenchingly close to failure at one point and I'm glad you still had a resurrection left to use! I still need to do this Owl fight myself at some point, but can't remember how you get to it! I did know at one stage 😁. I've done the Immortal Severance & Shura endings so far.

You should do the Homecoming ending - it's the only one where both kuro and wolf survive, kind of, and is a pretty good setup for a sequel

Just clearing up the outskirts and killed all the headless. Just leaves me demon of hatred and the sword saint.
Joy.
Caught up with my boy. He's currently banging his head against both, although he can get Doh down to his last phase and isshin down to his second, so he's getting there.
