I'm standing in front of the Isshin arena, having beaten every other boss (necessary and/or optional) for the good endings, tried all the recommended methods I've seen on YT (cheese or otherwise). I can do the Genichiro phase relatively fast and easy 9 times out of 10, but on the second phase my confidence drops like a rock and the handful of times I manage to move on to the third phase I shit the bed...
Worse part is I'm not consistent at deflecting the old fool, but I will get there eventually

Endings-wise, I've done Immortal Severance, Return, and Shura. I've only beaten Isshin twice in the process - no cheese, but my first playthrough was *long*.
I find Isshin's second phase to be the hardest, when he pulls a spear and a revolver out of thin air.

Do the wunty method. Kill his first phase then just run the rest of the battle and only attack once after the certain attacks. Takes like 10+ minutes zzzz but makes it only difficult rather than omg so so hard.
There is no choice. It's run run run or know his every move and parry almost perfectly. If you get the aggressive way down you can kill all four phases in like 2 minutes.
I forget the names but the huge blood sword swing thing move wrecks. Yes that's no help as there are lots of special sword moves. I'll know the one tomorrow. But it's that old sekiro thing of staying in the bosses face always. Always be either attacking or deflecting. He has a few charge up moves you can run around to be behind and the lightning phase is free posture damage.
Easy for me to say because I've put so many hours in. My first play through I could not beat him properly and got angry and sold the game. I can now beat him I think most of the time quickly but I must have beaten the game 10 times.

bichii Did you ever beat it with chip damage turned on I remember Isshin having an attack where he charges his sword and fires a beam out of it and you can dash to the side at the last second, then towards him for a poke. That's my tip for you

bichii2 I know which sword move you mean, the one with the Mortal Blade. The wunty method I've tried, but usually I deplete my health flasks getting hit while running around and eventually die. I pick the game up every few months and try him again. It is time for another pick up; maybe this time is the lucky one!

Chip damage?
Do you mean ringing the bell or do you mean the gauntlet mode with isshin+?

Is it called Mortal Draw? That was the move I remember being key for boss fights
I didn’t think Sekiro was that difficult other than a couple of bosses. The Owl Father one and the last fight. Both were real tests for me, must have taken 40 attempts on each of them
Nearly everything else I beat first or second attempt so I barely remember them at all. I remember those two cunts though
Never want to play it again, ever

One can only become one with the mortal blade if one starts a new game and rebuilds their skills again. One can't simply pick up a dusty blade and expect victory. In those months gaming gaps a ninja would have playing weaker games and became themselves weak.

Chip damage? Do you mean ringing the bell or do you mean the gauntlet mode with isshin+? Giving up the charm at the start. Without it, you receive chip damage of a third (I think) for anything that isn't a perfect parry. It's basically hard mode
I managed to get as far as the monk fight and gave up (think it was my last boss before the end game though)

Oh yeah I've beaten the game with that and the bell rung. Never again though. I don't like to sweat that much.

I seem to recall that High Monk is a good move to use against Isshin.
Sprint to the side when he does the ranged attack that AA mentioned, then circle around and hit him with Ichimonji Double.

On Dark Souls 2, there was a counter that reported the overall number of deaths of players (I'm not sure if this was for all formats or just the one you were playing), but if you were offline, this would report you own deaths; I don't think FROM would have anticipated a variable able to store my number of deaths in Sekiro...

You can see your deaths total in Nioh somewhere as well. I think mine was just over 250
