I get the message from pressure groups behind it because there's always going to be an emotive case that creates a pressure group but it's massively impractical and ignores a massive section of society that isn't a boy racer being egged on by their mates. It also flies into the face of the push to get people to do things like car pooling to reduce car usage and you know young parents with children. |

I think the idea is against peer age passengers,. presumably because of the distractions being with mates can cause, especially lads wanting to show off to their mates and shit like that. I think some other countries have similar rules in place, Ireland for instance. I haven't got the stats but I've read quotes that suggest traffic accidents are now likely to occur when there's an car full of adolescents. I don't have any strong feelings about it either way and no idea how easy it would be to enforce, but that's the reasoning as I understand it. A young parent wouldn't have any issues driving their kid around. |

The full headline was self explanatory and well within the Twitter character limit. "Drivers aged under 21 who have just passed their tests should be prevented from carrying passengers of a similar age for their first six months as drivers"

I don't know about this specific case. But often when some kind of interest group calls on the government to "do something" about a problem, the something they have in mind isn't exactly well thought through.
