I believe it was clarified in the news that it was due to the fact that her dad was angry about the poor way the school had dealt with the daughter being bullied. Yes, he should not have done what he did but I understand the mindset. However there is the revelation that the school in question has some massive issues with racism, more specifically Neo Nazism. Not seen that mentioned anywhere, though it's always possible there might be something going on we don't know about.
I've not seen anything anywhere that gives a very definitive answer on the reason. Just speculation.

I want to believe it is purely about bullying, but it's harder to believe that when incidents like the below occurred just a few years ago.

Imagine being the court appointed administrator in charge of running Infowars!

Absolutely 100% behind this, desperately want something similar to come into force over here asap.

Imagine being the court appointed administrator in charge of running Infowars! That's made me shudder. Over here if you ended up tanking its business you could end up on the hook (personally) for the losses.

That's a bit random, he seems like a nice guy when I've watched stuff he's done over the years: www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cl552xdq79do Always seems a bit weird when people leave their mobile behind.

Yeah, the mobile phone thing is weird, but he may just not have wanted to be disturbed on his walk or something. I hope he's found safe... I lost over 3 stone in 2018 solely due to him (and have kept over 2 of it off since!), massively improving both my physical and mental health. He must have helped hundreds of thousands of people do the same.

Yeah, the mobile phone thing is weird, but he may just not have wanted to be disturbed on his walk or something. Agreed but you can always turn a phone off. IMO one of if not the most important reasons for having a mobile is for the emergency call you might need to make one day. Years ago I always used to let my phone run down pretty flat, the days before having a car charger was a thing, then I got stranded at midnight in a broken down car on a dual carriage way, absolute PITA.

Absolutely 100% behind this, desperately want something similar to come into force over here asap. I disagree. It's not easy but there are existing mechanisms to control what your kids do etc. I've banned most social media from my son after it all got a bit much, with just YouTube and Reddit on a tome limit (and close to banning Reddit tbh). Stopped him taking his phone to school unless he needs it for after (and locking it during school hours). He hasn't really missed anything, despite the griping. It's a pain in the arse but is doable, despite the tantrums.

it's not a hill I'm entirely committed to dying on but I lean heavily with dougs on this one
having to present ID to access the internet has some hefty downsides, ultimately results in the state or private companies having a hackable verified list of every Tory MP's tractor porn visits

It's a pain in the arse but is doable, despite the tantrums. I assume you've done all of that because you don't want your son accessing social media, but you think it's the right for other parents and / or their children to decide if they do? Or it it because you personally don't want to have to submit ID for your accounts? What about parents who haven't got a clue how to go about doing this, or simply don't care (those two make up the vast majority)? We should just leave all of those kids open to the often devestating dangers of unrestricted social media access?
These are all genuine questions by the way, I'm not trying to be arsey. I feel very passionately about proper age restrictions on social media. I have my kids' phones locked down like fort knox, but it's not my kids I worry about.

Mixture of both really. Firstly, we don't have anything similar to Spain that could be used for ID. There will still be gaps - maybe NI number, which ais issued at 16? And handing over personal ID to private companies feels fraught with difficulties.
But mostly it's because I think parents need to take responsibility for what their kids do. Whether online or not. There will always be some who can't/find that difficult but I don't think that's an argument to wield the ban hammer. Education is key - otherwise it'll all just be deferred until they are 16 and where do you stop?
Edit: didn't take it as arsey at all - all good policy qs...

Some adults could do with being blocked from social media too.

We don't seem to have an athletics or even an Olympics thread. But this is a moment that will go down in infamy.

I agree with the Spain Social Media plan but it’s going to lead to business opportunity minded 17/18 year olds becoming fixers… meet me in the tunnel around the corner of your school and I’ll sign in and you can use my profile to troll your hate target for 5 mins. And would you like some weed with that?

Not wanting to be the arbiter of doom but it's not looking great for Michael Mosley, it's got quite under my skin, can't imagine what his family are going through. Given his last known sighting was heading off on some pathway, it's obvious you can't survive very long in that kind of climate with no water or shade + injuries (presumably).
