Is Babylon any good? Seen it pop up on Sky but nobody I know has seen it and it's not really been talked about on here much.

Robbie has done ALOT of shit films. I can't think of an A lister that has that many shit films under their name.

Again it was WoWS. She went straight to the top from TV aside from a very small role in that a shitty Richard Curtis film. I mean leading role as in its her movie. WoWS was the Belfort story starring Di Caprio, I, Tonya is, obviously, the Tonya Harding story.

I think Robbie is clearly one of the biggest movie stars around at the moment, and has been for quite a while, but it is weird even discussing the concept of a "movie star" in this day and age.
For about the last twenty years (or more?!) "stars" have been second fiddle to events and franchises - not just comic book movies but stuff like the various Jurassic films, Harry Potter, Pirates, Godzilla, etc. Even things like, I dunno, 2012 (or going back even farther, Twister and Independence Day) sold themselves on their effects and concepts rather than their cast.
So people like Robbie - and Lawrence, Johannsen, the Ryans - you tend to get mid-low budget prestige dramas where you could say "yeah, that's THEIR film, they're the draw, they're opening that movie", or you get big licenced stuff. So Robbie does I, Tonya or Lawrence does Joy, but then they do their various DC or X-Men movies. And (up until the bottom fell off the big blockbuster in the last year), it's those franchise movies that bring in the dough; so is it people going to see the star, or people going to see the franchise?
Even with older stars like Tom Cruise or Will Smith, their careers are incredibly variable. I don't think anyone expected Mission's box office to be quite as low as it is after the barnstorming success of Maverick last year.
All this is an incredibly long-winded and roundabout way of saying "what even is a movie star nowadays?"

JLaw to be fair has done well there although again I think doing franchises has hurt her stock a bit, but she’s got a good thing going with David O. Russell. Robbie and Gerwig could be similar. I can see them making a lot of films together and winning a lot of Oscars.

I mean...there was a time when Adam Sandler was an A lister and Netflix threw truck loads of money at him.
As noted - stars aren't the same thing anymore. It's characters and franchises. I'd be interested to know whether the top stars are paid similarly to those back in the day.

I'd be interested to know whether the top stars are paid similarly to those back in the day. Probably hard to work out as most stars had back-end deals. That's changing again though because of streaming, where there are essentially no residuals, so you're getting big up-front fees again. And according to Netflix, those Adam Sandler movies are hugely popular so money well spent I guess?!

I gather she only did Barbie because Greta convinced her it wouldn't be bullshit. Yes, JLaw is in "bigger" films and you have the MCU people but Robbie is very much considered a capable actress who elevates stuff. Also, have you not seen the amount of fucking Harley Quinn tat with her face on it? When you're a Halloween costume, you're big. No, she was active in making the film happen and is an executive producer and bought the film rights from Mattel. This is very much her baby.

Which big movies has she been in? (excluding Barbie) i'm not dissing her in any way, and there are different ways to classify someone as 'A-List' (fame, talent, awards, big movies, drawing power, etc..) She just doesn't seem to have been in enough big movies to be undisputedly crowned the biggest in Hollywood. But maybe I've just missed them. Or maybe I don't follow Hollywood news closely enough. When Google give a you a pink special effect page on a name search you have some clout.

Its hard/easy to believe that its been so successful that its made hollywood not think 'people will watch funny, well written movies if we make them' but 'people want a shared universe about Uno and that thing with wheels and a handle that pops balls when you roll it'.
Its going to be amazing when they all die on the vine.

Does anyone else remember after Transformers came out in 2007 (or whenever), Hasbro did something similar, announcing movies based on all sorts of stuff? And we ended up getting a Battleship film. At one point, I'm sure I didn't imagine this, Ridley Scott was attached to Monopoly.

Just did the same with a few random names eg Matt Damon and nearly all had a similar split of good to shit films. It seems an odd take in a discussion full of odd takes. I’m pretty sure it’s because she’s a young woman.

Jennifer Lawrence is a young woman...it might be a blonde stereotype thing though. I genuinely thought Margot Robbie had been in an unusually large amount of shit films before I looked at the other examples. There is something to this stereotype lark or it's cause she's in too many DC films which are invariably shit.

Didn't they try that already with Sandra Bullock? It was kind of a spiritual remake but set in the same world with linking characters so yes and no.
