It's always been a bit of a ropey business proposition.
Growth dependent entirely on increasing subscriber numbers, who are attracted to join by the creation of new content funded by debt. Said subscribers are actively encouraged to binge watch stuff faster than it can be produced. Meanwhile there is nothing to protect against competitors providing the exact same, and as it transpires who already own better value IP.
Eventually new subs will plateau, which has already started iirc. To keep subscribers engaged, they will need to continually create new content, and they can't do that from debt forever. It'll have to be funded by revenue.

It’s the Uber business model except they can’t suffocate the competition when they have genuine revenue streams from other sources. They’ll sell up to one of them eventually

That’s now the kind of price where it’s not a permanent sub and people start storing things up to binge. I’m absolutely not getting 16 quids worth of content from Netflix a month, especially now they have lost Star Trek. Yep. If they'd somehow kept Star Trek, I really often do just randomly watch an episode of two of TNG or DS9 on there, and so I might have just rolled my eyes, but generally there is not a lot of good content on Netflix, not enough to remotely justify that sort of hike - or really any kind - right now they should be thankful we're subscribing at all. They hike it, I cancel. Maybe they can save the money from people cancelling by stopping spending literally tens of millions getting ageing and now-shit comedians to do dreadful "specials"? Or making quarter-assed "documentaries". Is Star Trek leaving UK Netflix? It's still there as of 2 minutes ago; that would be a blow!

Sometime in "the summer" Paramount Plus is launching in the UK, apparently solely available as a function of having Sky TV and Sky Cinema, and possibly also if you have NowTV and Sky Cinema - it doesn't seem to be available separately at all. Paramount Plus will apparently have all Star Trek content on it, and in all other countries where Paramount Plus has launched, Paramount cancelled most existing contracts licensing Star Trek content out to other channels. Specifically it took all the Trek off US Netflix. The only major exception I'm aware of is that Picard and Lower Decks seem to be continuing to also be on Amazon Prime - perhaps because CBS/Paramount work closely with Amazon - it's rather surprising/annoying they decided to work with the shitbirds at Sky in the UK instead of them. But even them sticking around isn't 100% certain.

Urrrghh!! Better sneak in a few more TNG and the odd TOS before then!
Aren't they on some random Freeview channel? Because, I almost feel they are best enjoyed when you randomly catch one just starting on TV....but who watches broadcast television these days?!

It'll have to be funded by revenue. It feels to me like they have the occasional tentpole hit which grabs the headlines, all the straight-to-dvd shite so they can boast to investors how many hours of new content they produce and then they buy in Friends and The Office which is where viewers actually spend most of their time

TOS (series 3 atm) is on at 8 o'clock on the Horror Channel and TNG is on Pick at 5 o'clock. For me that's Freeview channels 68 and 35 respectively.

I haven't heard anything for my local market (Greece), is that a regional thing?

Would be useful if people actually put the name of the show they're recommending... Crazy idea I know!

Might be a UK only hike at the moment. I think the us had one recently. Can't see me stomaching the extra. I seem to have a small binge on something but most of the content I view is still in 1080p. Might just drop a tier and see how I go

Abandoned Inventing Anna after three episodes. Hate all of the characters, and am not at all interested in the main character's story. Julia Garner, usually amazing, seems to be doing a bad Tommy Wiseau impression with that accent... hilariously bad. Oh and I absolutely can't stand the rap soundtrack, but that's just me.

I stuck with it to the end, but it's not without it's problems. And yeah, her accent is sort of special.
1. It plays the "Is she or isn't she a genuine heiress?" when it's based on a true story and there was a court case and of course she fucking isn't.
2. It tried to make you sympathetic towards her at the end, despite the fact that she's been portrayed as an utter cretin and there's nothing to hang that on. Also everybody who has been sympathetic to her has been established as a gullible fuckwit. So it's inviting you do be one of them.
3. It also half-arsedly tries to portray her as some kind of class warrior, holding a mirror up to the craven over-privileged glitterati of the NY scene, but it so half-arsed that it fails to pull it off. Plus she's already been portrayed as materialistic and shallow as everybody else.
The most sympathetic character is a bit part that tags along with the life coach when they try and stage an intervention, because the girl obviously has issues. Bit part proceeds to get shitfaced and point out to Anna's face that she's a nobody and there are countless people like her bullshitting their way through society. They should have just made the series about her. She looked fun.

Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. 0/10 It had me asleep within minutes and the wife stuck with it for 30 minutes more thinking there'd be food at some point but instead got gossipy dross and nails being done. Am not allowed to put it back on.

Price hike to £15.99 a month incoming What irks me is that I pay for the premium tier subscription to get content in 4k Dolby Vision, yet brand new films like Joker are standard HD. ... then some godawful throwaway series or documentary will be 4K Dolby Vision. It's completely backwards. The only reason I haven't cancelled is the new series of Better Call Saul next week... another piece of flagship content that should be in Dolby Vision, but at least it's 4K.

Might as well just cancel it now until BCS has finished airing (16th August) and sub for a month. I mentioned in the other thread that there's a mid-season break in it, which to me seems like a move to keep subs active for longer.

Yeah you've got to assume that. Frankly. I'm surprised they're not also releasing one episode per week.

Think it's an AMC show originally, so yeah, weekly episodes too.

Manhunt : Unabomber 7/10 Got a bit weird towards the end for which it deserved to lose a mark, but after careful consideration it has Paul Bettany.
Shot Caller 7/10 Prison drama, with the unlikely casting of Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as the lead Neo Nazi. But it works, thanks to the script and the cast, among them Lake Bell and Jon Bernthal, nice surprise.

Fucking hell, the interview with one of Savile's victims remembering back in the new documentary is one of the most harrowing things I've ever sat though. I find the whole thing utterly fascinating how he kind of hypnotized an entire country but her very childlike description of what happened is just heartbreaking. Just finished this and I feel physically sick. Worth watching, but brace, brace.

My wife watched Inventing Anna over a couple of days. I caught bits here and there - definitely couldn't have watched it, would have annoyed the fuck out of me. From what I saw, I agree with Chops. Especially point 3, but it wasn't done well enough.

Return To Space
Really interesting documentary about Spacex, from it's beginnings through to the development, testing and first successful flights of the Falcon rocket, the reusable rocket, and the Dragon orbital capsule.
Lots of great footage of Elon Musk and his team, NASA people, and the first two astronauts who went up in the Dragon to the ISS.
There's even a clip of when Elon went on Joe Rogan and smoked a spliff. Legend.
It's time to stop giving Elon shit about that cave thing in Thailand, and admit he is a modern day Space Jesus who is going to be pivotal in manned space exploration back to the Moon and beyond to Mars!
9/10
