I binned off Haven recently. I was in the mood for something different so thought I would give this a try. The writing was really good and I enjoyed spending my time with the two main characters. However, the turn based combat was so basic and boring. There were times when I was not doing any damage to some of the enemies and had no idea why. It meant some of the encounters would drag on forever or I would die and have to start again and experience the same issue. Perhaps I wasnt doing something right, but it wasnt clear. The game also does not make it very clear which direction you should be heading in. There were a few times that I became lost with no idea which way to go.
Also, not enough sexy times! A missed opportunity here.
A game with potential, but ultimately serious flawed.

Crash Nitro Racing or whatever it's called on PS4/5. Damn, it sucks. I mean the fucking art direction - I don't think I've ever played an uglier, more charmless piece of crap. It tries desperately to handle like a MK game, but screws up the one thing integral to the feel of those - the jump/skid button, and adds in another needless button press to turbo. The weapons all do the same thing but just feel... off, with very little audio feedback. The tracks are a visual mess with some of the more open being hard to read until you've completed a couple of laps. It's just a lazy, cynical MK64 re-skin. It kind of looks like it, kind of plays like it, but screws up every little nuance that makes MK so fun. Oh and I started it on Adventure mode on classic difficulty, and anyone that thinks MK8D cheats outrageously - and it does - must never have played this. Did the first three tracks, then just turned it off in a combination of frustration and total bemusement as to why anyone would play this over MK8/Deluxe, Sonic Transformed, or Sonic Team Racing. I got it when it came out around the same time as Sonic Team Racing. I bought into the nostalgia a little, even though I've never been massively into Crash Bandicoot or CTR anyway. Never really got into it either and binned it off after getting through the campaign on easy. I think I should have just got the Sonic one instead.

near the start it mentions you need to do certain attack on certain enemies either the fireball or the punch attack. Also yeah its terrible at times with the map and where you are suppose to go

I was fairly far into the game, so I had the combat down mostly. I just then suddenly hit this much bigger enemy type and for some reason I coudnt hurt it. I have no idea why and after a few attempts (which followed me getting lost for an hour incedently), I just gave up on it.

later on there is some enemies that couldn't be hurt at certain stages in the fight or you would have to switch to the opposite attack

Ghostrunner
Really don't know why I bought this. Clearly designed more for keyboard and mouse rather than controller, and my ageing reactions can't cope with it. Just makes me angry playing it.
Oh and the PS5 upgrade is blighted my sound issues and weird controller vibration glitches.

I've gone to buy it a few times but something stops me each time. Glad I didn't from the sounds of things.

Yeah I really didn't get on with the demo. I played the demo first, thought it was alright but very hard. I was delusional to think I'd manage with the full game. At least I can take some solace that it was on sale when I bought it.

I bought the game on PS4 and was so pissed off. Glad it's not just my waning skills then. I found it fucking solid, but not in the 'one more go' category. More "Fuck this game"

As far as I remember the reactions were mixed, though I don't really remember why. But the posts here are probably a good indication.
Anyway, I bounced off of two games yesterday. Part of that is just a huge backlog, so I don't always give games a lot of time to grab me.
First - Narcosis - which is a short underwater Horror-game. It did manage to annoy me with a fairly cheap jumpscare early on and then blocked my way through a tight tunnel with a deadly enemy. Twenty minutes isn't a lot of time, but I just didn't find the whole thing all that elegant. Too much noise and dirty water and generally not the strongest of atmospheres. I mean I was interested in it first and foremost as an underwater game, not so much as a horror game.
Second - Nightside - an RTS by a small developer. It looked interesting at first sight with the dark battlefields and the strange faction designs and aesthetics, but mostly the designs just turned out as somewhat random shapes and units seem to all fit into very similar archetypes for the most part. Factions are a bit different in how they build units and buildings, but ressource collection seems to be the same and combat units and upgrades systems also didn't seem to differ in any significant or interesting ways.

To me it felt like an early VR game, where the novelty of moving around in a diving suit would have (barely) carried the game. But outside of that there wasn't really anything of interest. I got a bit further than you, and things didn't really improve (turn on the power switches to activate the lift, navigate this base module where it's been turned on its side etc).

I saw a bit more of the game through an LP and it seems to be a bit too eager to put obstacles in the player's way. Nothing particularly difficult, just enough to slow things down and be an annoyance. At least to me.

Two more binned last night. I'm getting good at this.
Star Wars Battlefront 2: I've no interest in multiplayer, but I heard this had a single-player campaign, so for four quid I though it might be an enjoyable way to spend a few evenings. It isn't. The FPS levels are linear and tedious, and the flying bits are worse than the 25 (ish) year old N64 game.
Xenon Racer: This actually looks really nice, and could have been a nice Ridge Racer-alike, but the power sliding just doesn't work properly. The vehicles are all heavy as fuck so when the slide just flat-out refuses to work, it makes racing almost impossible. Shame, because I think there's a decent game here if the controls just worked properly.

Astria Ascending
It looked good in the previews. 2d turn based JRPG and not 70 hour plus game like Octopath (if you want to see the full game) Good thing it was on gamepass as it could of been so good but even you ignore the b tier voice acting, it has lot of issues like being very unbalanced as the devs couldn;t be bothered/"games have always been like this and make bosses cheap with lazy status attacks that can kill or stun etc all the party and they can only be hurt in 1 way and massive health bars later on and go through lots of phases and get all their health. Even on very easy, the later bosses are way over powered and cheap
In game the party give their enemy an name and its awful, "the fruitless" (as they don't eat the fruit that makes people strong) its so laughably bad. Ingame they say its not great name but its still shit. I like the art style and it should be smaller JRPG and the story is fine. The combat is quite good as you have main class and can pick sub class and get all the roles for each character

Just bailed on MGS: Peace Walker (PSP) at the second mech fight (the one where you have to stop it launching the nukes)
Game was pretty fun up to that point, and looked amazing considering it's running on a 15 year old handheld. The lack of a second analog stick really hurt the controls though, and the designers don't seem to have taken the controls into account when designing the game, especially how aiming takes forever during some of the boss fights that give you very limited time to line up a shot. I nearly launched my PSP at a wall a few times, and when a game gets to that point it's time to put it down.
I loved the hand drawn cut scenes, and the missions that weren't boss fights. I can see why they released a HD version for consoles with proper controllers as not fighting with the controls all the time would solve my biggest issue with the game.

Boyfriend Dungeon is a well-designed dungeon crawler, with decent combat and an interesting variety of weapons, which are, incidentally, also people you date in a dating sim. The dungeon crawling is entertaining enough that I almost forgot how much I hate dating sims! Almost. And since I didn't enjoy that, there's little more to the game than watching numbers go up. And so, yeet.

Turns out I'm incapable of completing Subnautica games.
I followed the exact same pattern for Below Zero as I did for the first one- spent hours exploring and finding blueprints, built a couple of bases, got a decent way through the story, then lost interest a bit before the endgame. It just got a little faffy with the remote penguin fetch quests, and after a 4 week absence I realised I wasn't coming back and uninstalled.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
REALLY wanted to like this, been meaning to play it for years, but only got about an hour in. Fundamentally it's just a really bad game. Maybe it's aged poorly, but the glacial movement speed makes solving the environmental puzzles an absolute chore, to the point where I just couldn't see myself doing that for 8 hours. The environments are like little mazes where a one-foot high bush or stone is the thing blocking your path, so you have to walk all the way around whilst dealing with an endless cacophony of voices and visual distortions, with no idea what you are actually trying to achieve. A+ game design.
The combat is ok, it feels chunky, but it's extremely one-one, and with more than one enemy soon becomes frustrating.
The acting is good, the animation is stunning, visually it's great, and I'm all for trying something new, and it's admirable that they make a stab at conveying psychosis. But it's all pointless if the game itself is complete shit.
Once upon a time, I might have ploughed through but life's too short.

That's a shame. It wears its AA origins on its sleeves, but it was quite a memorable experience for me. All of 7 hours long, I think. Some of the puzzles were really smart, the combat was chunky if repetitive, but the atmosphere was excellent throughout. Usually I'd have bounced off something with frustratingly slow motion, but even I made it to the end. If you've binned it you've binned it, but it might grab you if you forgive it some of the rough edges.

As I said, I did really want to like it, and it definitely sucked me in until I got to the first big Illusionist puzzle, and it just felt so frustrating combined with the fact I didn't really know what I was supposed to be doing. I'm going to look at a walkthrough for that section and if it turns out I was just being an idiot I'll probably give it another shot. Edit: just looked and nope, everyone says that particular puzzle is the worst part of the game, so I'll give it another go. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUzmxOYbhMU

Yeah, once your brain knows what it’s looking for they get easier. Give it another hour and see if it picks up enough pace to keep you interested. If not: into the bin with it for real real.

Went back at lunch - once I knew what the deal was it was a whole lot less frustrating, and the boss fight is BADASS! So yeah, back on board. Still think it wasn't that well signposted, and faster movement speed would be nice, but I was definitely not in the mood last night.

Great, glad you've been able to push through. My whelm was definitely undered for the first hour or so as well, but I was happy I'd stuck with it. Again, it's very much in the AA camp, but some really good ideas in there and some good execution.

Back 4 Blood
I'd rather a L4D2 upgrade, this just feels so sluggish and a bit underwhelming.
I'll try again after a few patches because it definitely has some promise. The deck building is actually a nice addition and the maps are decent.
Just missing the magic of L4D.
