There isn't really any big groundbreaking design at play here. Dark Souls had that, and this is just Open World Dark Souls. I (and a lot of people) really like Dark Souls and I always want more of it, and Elden Ring delivers exactly that. Pretty much how I see it, which is why I said the open world aspects aren't necessarily flaws. I just prefer the more condensed experience of DS. My favourite part was probably Stormveil Castle, which is basically a DS level. For me, the 'more of it' isn't more of what I want, it's open world stuff. Fine if you just like knocking about in a fantasy world, but that was never the draw for me in the first place
Essentially, my experience of it is that to make it bigger, they watered it down with open world design. Of all the bosses I fought, two felt like a big deal. The others felt like mini bosses. I'd rather take my DS neat

Betrayer (2014): Kind of a survival FPS set in early colonial America. The white-black-red graphical style is certainly memorable, but I found the combat gameplay loop unengaging and I felt it isn't overly successful at creating a strong atmosphere. I mean, the sound is fine and it's not unatmospheric, but... well, there are quite a few menus, lots of things to pick up around the landscape and I think that's part of my problem. It seems needlessly complex and its mechanics and gameplay don't seem to work in favor of its story. I'm also not sure why it takes place in an open world. No voice-acting and you simply talk to the spirits you meet without much ado. It feels a little too sterile for something that takes place in a supernatural setting.
But I don't want to discourage anyone from trying it. I did only play it for 40 minutes or so.
This has been in my Steam list of games to play for oooo about 8 years. Somehow I think the ship has sailed for me. Doesn't sound like I missed much either.

I think for me it boils down to that I prefer a more linear experience and for the core mechanics of DS, I preferred having to repeat sections fairly quickly to get used to enemies etc. Whereas in ER I can go wherever the fuck I like, and I don't feel like I'm learning as quickly. And I think part of MY problem is that I only have x amount of time to play games, so a linear experience of the original DS suited me, rather than dicking about in an open world. I'm still going to play ER, but it'll just take me a lot longer to 'complete' it.

Surely the fact that it can have a discreet, (multi-)linear classic Souls level like Stormveil Castle within a contiguous open world is one of the things that make it stand out.
One of the ways it's like BotW is that you plot your own route around the world based on whims and what looks interesting, rather than picking a quest from a menu and following the objective marker.

Enemies are in the way and need to be overcome and it always feels like progress to do so. In ER, they're quite often wandering around in the open or in a camp somewhere which you can just avoid if you want. You aren't really progressing as such, it's all just... there
I'm the same - I enjoyed what I played of it, but after 40 hours or so, it's not really sustaining me. I'll wait until I'm in the mood to sink some time into something again and go back to it

Not sure why you would play ER, be in here a hell of a lot, but not delve into the ER thread btw AA. Everything is still being spoilered up to the hilt in there.
That's another matter though. Fair enough you don't want to keep playing it. We like what we like. As frog said - which for some reason you took as an attack - the warning signs were there very early on that you probably wouldn't get on with it. He wasn't having a dig, merely an observation.

There's another similarity then. Don't think Assassin's Creed does that.

BotW did that with the Divine Beasts anyway As much as I liked the Divine Beasts, they definitely didn't come close to the complexity that legacy dungeons like Stormveil have. Having some bigger, Hyrule Castle-like dungeons (to go along with simpler shrine/DB-like ones, not to replace them, to be clear) is actually pretty much top of my wishlist for things to add in the sequel. Kind of a "best of both worlds" deal, the bigger, more complex dungeons of earlier Zelda games coexisting with BotW's simpler, more streamlined ones.

As frog said - which for some reason you took as an attack - the warning signs were there very early on that you probably wouldn't get on with it. He wasn't having a dig, merely an observation. I did have a look in there but people were discussing weapons, builds, something called Roundtable which I hadn't discovered yet. From games have always been a solo experience for me
As for the fog comment, it just annoyed me because I'd clearly said what aspects I wasn't particularly taken with but rather than addressing it or adding anything, he just chimed in with a dismissive comment as if I'm not allowed an opinion becuase I wasn't wetting myself up to release
I honestly can't remember what I even said about it before it came out and was mostly just messing about from what I remember. My opinion of the game started when I started playing it and I had a lot of fun with it until I decided I needed a break
It's just annoying for people to reply with 'you're not playing it right', 'you're being a bit unfair to it'. It's a video game. Why am I being 'unfair' because I have an opinion on something?

I don't see any watering down but we're clearly not going to agree.... In DS you get Estus upgrades. In ER, you get seeds - you need multiple seeds to upgrade your Estus. Is that an improvement or a consession to spread it out a bit because it's open world and massive?

ER does it better (although I'm only going by Stormveil, which was cool) but was just saying it's not unique

Is that an improvement or a consession to spread it out a bit because it's open world and massive? In Dark Souls you have to look for fire keeper souls to add flask charges, in ER you have to look for seeds. I don't see it being better or worse, certainly not an issue or a great example of something being "watered down".

Because you need multiple upgrades for the same thing. If they'd given you straight upgrades to it in ER, there'd either be far more Estus uses or fewer upgrade items, thus having less rewards to put in the world
You just don't want to see it as if everything I say is negative. I'm saying it's open world and I don't like some of the things that come with that. You do, fine but let's not pretend

Don't think anyone said that. I would hope we were all above that by now. You can play it however the hell you like. If you don't love the game unconditionally, so what.

That was my perception of the comment anyway and why I responded how I did. He did call me stupid after though
