FWIW, while it probably depends on playstyle, I've never felt the need to hunt for materials or random animals in Elden Ring so far, and this is coming from someone who has absolutely felt that need in pretty much every other open-worlder I've played. Fair play if you don't feel like playing anymore of course, that's up to you, I'm just giving my two cents that material hunting and item crafting hasn't felt important yet. Edit: Damn it, new page! That was for Aunt Alison 's post...

Fair enough but I think you're doing it a massive disservice with recycled content. It really shits all over many open world games, especially as the breadth of it is quite insane. But you like what you like.

Also yeah I've never felt an urge or a need to keep collecting materials.

It is recycled content though. They never repeated bosses in DS or BB and the chalice dungeons (which is what they are) were pretty much completely separate to the game. In ER, they're part of the prime content
I don't think it's a bad game but it is an open world game with the same trappings. Whether they're flaws or not is up to the player
The resource gathering aspect was really just to reinforce my point about it being the same as most other open world games. The sheep bones are actually one of the only useful things I've found - for crafting arrows

I think the world and dungeons are nice, but I don't see why it gets listed along with Breath of the Wild, if I'm being honest. It's much closer to Skyrim, but with much tougher enemies. But that's fine too, because Skyrim had a similar leave a ruin then go out and create your adventure set up. But this lacks the physics or traversal that I associate with BotW. Like I said, this is a more challenging Skyrim or a more open Dark Souls.

But you like what you like. Bigger isn't always better. In DS, I'd see something in the distance and think I'll go there at some point. In ER, I look around and think fucking hell, I'll probably go there in about 4 weeks

That was for Aunt Alison 's post... Playstyle might be part of it. I've always gone straight physical, never bothered with magic or even coating my weapon or any of that stuff. I'm well hard
A lot of the rewards in ER so far have been spells or those summon things which I'm not interested in so it's not that satisfying. I just want the fights

Eh? You just get on your horse...and go there. And miss out on all the stuff that's dotted around. I like to carefully explore every corner which is great in DS, not so much in this
I don't hate it, Jambo. It's fine

I totally didn't see this coming in the lead up to the game, no not at all.

Eh I was enjoying it just fine for 40 hours. I haven't been posting in the ER thread because it's all spoilery but I've had plenty of discussions with cool boy Danno over PM about it
What I did see coming was From fans getting arsey because someone said Elden Ring is fine, which to a From fan is tantamount to saying it's completely fucking shit
DS2 and BB are two of my favourite games and I've played and enjoyed all their games since DS
Don't know what you're on about, son

Who's getting arsey? I thinking you're exaggerating just a tad.

Haven't seen anyone get arsey at all, just that it was predictable that you would say this.
Couldn't give a flying fuck if you or anyone else likes it tbh. Also I'm not exactly a from fan, I thought Sekiro was a bit shit after a few hours play with it.

I assumed frogofdoom was ignoring any actual points from my original post and just saying oh look the From hater doesn't like it
Which judging from his second post is exactly what it was

Like I said, this is a more challenging Skyrim or a more open Dark Souls. I'd say it's mostly because BotW made such a splash that it became the quintessential open-world in many people's minds. Having played Elden Ring now I agree that it doesn't have a lot of the physics puzzles and environmental/elemental gameplay that BotW had (I think lightning magic gains an AoE on striking water, but that's about it) but on prerelease it was easy to call it the "BotW of Dark Souls" since it was a series' first foray into open world gameplay, much like Pokémon Legends Arceus was the "BotW of Pokémon".

It's nothing like breath of the wild because if you find a weapon you actually get to keep it rather than borrow it for 5 minutes.

Yeah me too, it's honestly one of the most annoying things I have come across in a game. It's one of the things that really put me off botw along with the complete lack of dungeons.

Weapons breaking in BotW never really bothered me but I wouldn't go as far as to say I liked it. Again, it was a contrivance of open world design. They needed something to reward to player with (weapons) and 100+ hours of using the Master Sword would have got old

I liked it. They designed countless weapons, and that mechanic gave you reason to use them. Probably would've just found the Master Sword and stuck with it otherwise. Also allowed for inventive uses of said weapons, like using them as a source to run electricity through, or just throwing them at Moblin's stupid faces.

I think it's mainly because of the structure of the open world and sense of exploration from it that's very much like BOTW, the influences are very obvious despite the huge differences.

It's kind of just an open world fantasy setting though. As I said, it's more similar to something like Skyrim that BotW. Hell, Skyrim influenced both BotW and Witcher 3, the two big open world games everything's compared to.
I like how Elden Ring is designed, it is fun to just put on a podcast and go around killing giants and knights and things, but I just don't see the big groundbreaking design that puts its name next to what's arguably the best and most inventive open world game yet.

It's one of the few open world games where I actually want to go to places because they look cool, not because some icon on a map is leading me there. It is very similar to BotW in that way.
Is it groundbreaking? I don't know. But it doesn't have to be.

There isn't really any big groundbreaking design at play here. Dark Souls had that, and this is just Open World Dark Souls. I (and a lot of people) really like Dark Souls and I always want more of it, and Elden Ring delivers exactly that.
