Some good non-From calls here - Nioh / Nioh 2 and The Surge / The Surge 2.
Regarding the former, I think the Ninja Gaiden comparison is better due to the speed of the combat and how easily you can get murdered by grunts - a wrong move and they'll wipe your health so you /have/ to learn to be aggressive, and effectively so, quite early on, or you'll give up; coupled with early bosses like Hino-Enma (as Gary Spin-Kick says, she's the third) and I'm not surprised so many gave in. I almost did, just like I almost gave up Ninja Gaiden at Murai and Masakado - then after, it clicked and it went on to become my favourite game of the time.
The Surge and The Surge 2 are excellent, more properly Soulsbornes, and a good spin on it (so much better than Lords of the Fallen). Again, they suffer from murderous bosses. Black Cerberus is the one time in my gaming life I've actually broken a controller. Not proud of myself, especially as my son saw it (he still takes the piss out of me for it).

My main gripe with Nioh 1&2 is the loot system but apart from that they are excellent. Personally I prefer Nioh 2 despite the fact it's more of a Nioh 1.5. Just felt like it was that little better oiled and the yokai burst counters etc are a nice extra dynamic to combat.

I can't remember much about Nioh. I got as far as beating that big centipede boss then picked up another game and never went back, even though I was quite enjoying it. I seem to do this quite often!

Three felt like a big pile of fan service. No bad thing and it was a good send off (particularly wrapping up with the Ringed City DLC). The combat always felt slightly off to me, big weapons lacked some heft imo. There was too much Bloodborne infused into DS3 for me. I still like it, and I obviously love Bloodborne, but it meant DS3 was this weird hybrid to play, and there were parts like Irithyll, Demon Ruins etc that looked straight up lifted from Bloodborne and didn't really have much in keeping with the aesthetics of Dark Souls imo. Still great, just not as good. It wasn't just the graphics either. I always play as a big tank bastard, but there were times in DS3 where it felt like it would just break your poise no matter how you'd spent points. I ended up abandoning it and starting again with a DEX build, where, yes, it felt a lot like BB.

Totally. Poise just doesn't work the way you're used to it working in DS3 (and yes for all the vids and pieces I've seen that proclaim it works as intended) and as such a big heavy tank bastard build just isn't viable. They want you to roll about the place and that's it really. I went back to DS1 the other day and picked up my big fuck off Tarkus build. Good times. None of that in DS3. They also took out the upgrading of armour, which I loved doing in DS1 and 2.
That said. Still platinumed it and play it regularly, so it's not like I hate it, just wish they hadn't done away with some fundamental things that made it more souls, and less, well, borne.

Fortunately I always play no shield (and to be honest, don't try out many different builds - never even touched magic in any From game) so liked that DS3 was a bit faster and more aggressive. Overall the game feels a bit basic though, just decent. Shame they didn't bring over more of the interesting elements of DS2

I'm glad it wasn't just me. I just remember getting staggered by stuff that wouldn't have troubled me in the previous games, before getting pissed off that my build seemed useless and starting again. I've never done a magic build on any of them actually. Maybe I'll try that first on DeS.

I've done magic on DeS, DS1 and DS2. Think I've only done a faith build on DS3. A hex build on DS2 is the way to go though.
But yeah, real shame about poise and the lack of armour upgrading. This Tarkus build I mentioned for example has the black iron set, all fully upgraded to +5. The addition of the wolf ring means I can just stand there and smash things without getting interrupted and barely feeling any hits. It's not the best way to play but it's an option that they completely removed from DS3. I remember going full Havel and still getting knocked out of attacks by shitty hollows.

Not much of an issue with Hexes, you can get multiple copies of Dark Orb for trash and then save your Resonants for bosses

Not really. You always end up with enough to see you through. Plus you have hex / magic / faith based melee weapons to tide you over should you run out.

I'm amazed Bloodborne isn't in the lead. Sure my favourite is sekiro but clearly Bloodborne is the best game of the lot. It's almost perfect.

It's properly not perfect. But I understand your enthusiasm

Dark Souls has got so much too it though. More character, more interesting NPCs, more WTF moments, more shortcuts, more weapons, more variety, more builds etc
I can see why it wins
