To be fair to Rolex it's not actually their fault other than building a successful brand. The culture around it is fucked though. The customer base, the ADs, the grey market dealers, all fucked.
Like literally last time I popped into Goldsmiths I was told that my wishlist showed loyalty to Rolex but not loyalty to Goldsmiths and it would be good if I bought some other shit I didn't want in order to show that loyalty to Goldsmiths. I was like "nah you're good thanks, bye". Will honestly never buy another thing from them.

I mix with some seriously moneyed up clients through work, one of the clique is rich by even Manhattan standards, drives a GT3 RS etc. he got knocked back from the Rolex AD trying to get the new.. Daytona is it? Become quite the joke, apparently they did a background check and he sold a Cartier 5 years ago, straight off the list

Yeah other than maybe upping production and setting some proper ground rules with the ADs it's not really their fault. They could try a lot harder to get their watches to people who actually want them though. I agree its the culture around them, the fanbase is mostly made up of either toxic young new money instagram show offs who will pay the stupid grey dealer rates or wealthy older men who are even more toxic. 50 percent of ADs are corrupt and are direct supplying the grey market for a cut. The others only give to 'special customers' who buy loads of other stuff in their shops. Then their are the flippers who seem to have the relationship with ADs but flip for a profit as soon as they buy them. The Grey market and their shill youtube content providers are mostly to blame. Basically as soon as Watchfinder got a grip on the market around 5 years ago it all went to shit.

Its pretty well known that Watchfinder went around buying all the less popular preowned rolex models (explorers, explorer 2s, milgauss, GMT masters, Yachtmasters, two tone models etc.) around 5-7 years ago and starved the market to drive demand so people would pay their stupidly inflated prices.

Not defending watchfinder's sales tactics but they make decent youtube content. The more recent podcast chat style ones are great

The whole market for more expensive watches, especially Rolex, has always been fucked. But that's Veblen goods for you and the world the manufacturers and dealers have created with limited supply creating demand.
Thankfully I found collecting vintage watches much more satisfying so managed to avoid it. I've not bought anything for ages though, as the few pieces I would like now have astronomic prices and there isn't really anything in the box I would be willing to sell in order to fund a purchase.

You could walk into any rolex AD 5 years ago and pick up a GMT master, explorer 1 and 2, milgauss, yachtmaster etc. and even a sub if you were lucky. The only model you couldn't get was a steel daytona and GMT batman. The market is completely fucked and toxic now

It doesn't get much better at some of the London second hand places. I encountered the most ridiculously snobby rep in the Burlington Arcade vintage Omega shop. Mind, with their prices maybe he knew I wouldn't be making a purchase.

Yeah snobby stuck up reps are unbearable, they seem to have completely forgot that they are a shop worker who's one job it is is to be nice to potential customers to get a sale. The Omega boutique at the Trafford centre in Manchester has three of them that look at you like dirt if you approach the door, I swear they hate working. The beaverbrooks next door is completely different and very welcoming.

Talking about Swatch made me have a look for a Pop Swatch on eBay and, wow, with the 90s revival going on, Swatch are leaving a *lot* of money on the table.
They are the purest, most distilled 90s design objects ive ever seen.

I used to love my pop swatch, I wish I still had it. I have seen the same one on ebay but it was part of a job lot and I couldn't justify it.
I still pine after my first watch. It was a Timex stopwatch sort of thing with 2 blue buttons on the front - Me and my mates spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to start and stop the stopwatch in the shortest possible time. My best was 0.08 seconds (why do I remember this). I've looked but have never managed to find the same watch in any pictures etc online

I also spent a lot of time trying to stop it exactly on 1 second, first looking at the watch and then without, and then stepping up to seeing how close I could get to a minute spot on.

Are they actually camping outside the Swatch boutiques for those moody Seamasters? I was going to go to London tomorrow to buy a couple but I won't bother if it's a shit show.
Swatch have confirmed they're completely not limited, btw. They'll be for sale online after a little period of exclusivity at the boutiques.
I totally had a watch twat conversation at work the other day. Although the guy had the temerity to ask if my Seamaster was the twatty Goldeneye quartz one.

Apparently people are camping but that's going purely on Twitter.
Given the level of interest I suspect they sell out fairly early in the morning so I'm tempted to roll in around 8 or 9 and see what's what.
If the online experience is anything like getting trainers its frustrating af so I'd prefer to try in person.

My friend in Hong Kong took a photo of the campers who’d been outside the shop all night, about 30 minutes before opening the police turned up and forced them all to move

Yeah, I'm glad I didn't hack my way to covent garden then. I'm not that desperate for one, it was just a whim.

Either if its a clever ruse or the lines are mental.
When it was 70 or 80 people camping I toyed with the idea of wandering in. The last video I saw I'd say your looking at a queue of 500 minimum stretched along and around Oxford Street.
Carnaby and Covent Garden similar.
It's going to be a mess when the doors open.

Oh shit, yeah. So Omega and Swatch have a saucy little collab now. Feast your eyes. www.swatch.com/en-us/bioceramic-moonswatch.htmlCheck the linko for more, they've got all manner of sprawtsy colours. Mercury has my name all over it. Also, it's not going to get the shit scalped out of it, it's a continual run and you'll be able to buy it online from Swatch once the outlet sales calm their tits. 206 quid a piece to you fuckers.
