Then again, I was on google maps a few weeks ago, and I was curious and did some google streetviews of some randomly really remote areas in eastern Russia.
Jesus christ. It's like they've only just discovered the wheel ffs.

I was saw someone on the news suggest that his biggest miscalculation was to underestimate how sick everyone was of his bullshit. Invading crimea, years of poking, prodding, assassinating, flying into other countries airspace and Russias big takeaway was 'lol, pussies' when actually they were just firming up the worlds resolve to say 'fuck this guy' when he actually did something big. Not only were countries now prepared to take the hit on gas, they were willing to send arms to fight them. Yeah, that's probably a better way of me trying to get my point across

What other options does he have? He can't say "Job done, goal achieved" and withdraw, without looking ridiculous on the world and home stage. USA's withdrawal from Afghanistan suggests that the world will be quite happy not to make a big deal of withdrawal and just move on.

I find it weird that the pro-putin media commentators are, in the same breath, extolling the virtues of mobilization and also threatening protestors with being sent to the front lines.
"The war is going great and you should all volunteer! And if you're bad we'll send you there to die! No really, it's great!"

They are now saying they will use nuclear weapons to... ensure the referendums go well. That totally doesn't sound like a tantrum.
But now I'm worried that Russia's defeat will come from within, and that if Putin were backed into a corner, he might actually do something crazy. I sure hope there are some failsafe systems against dictators gone mad, even in Russia.
Worst case, things should still be fine, as long as we don't allow a mineshaft gap.

I only found out yesterday how well the army of Finland is drilled at dealing with a Russian invasion. There is no connecting infrastructure with Russia (other than roads) and the bridges are made to be destroyed. They also have the largest amount of artillery and an excellent air force with the goal of bombarding any invasion. Had he decided to go after them instead of Ukraine the results would have been even worse somehow.

It's all totally bizarre. For an army that mainly lacks logistics and morale, I don't see how conscripting more soldiers is supposed to anything but make it worse.
Seems like many of these supposed recent soldiers are in 50s or students with zero military training.

Yeah earlier in the conflict everyone was catastrophising about the war expanding to Finland, to which the answer was "you've clearly not heard about how long the Finns have been preparing for just that."

I think its literally written into law that each government has to prepare for invasion. They have like a million reservists and a bunker system that can fit the population of Helsinki into it.
Pretty much their whole approach to Russia is to make sure they aren’t worth the effort.

Reporting that it’s full mobilisation so, given how bent Russia is, the only dudes left in the country are going to be fat gangsters and their sons.

There's something rather amusing (if entirely unsurprising) about a load of people who've been very loudly pro-Putin's war suddenly scrambling away as fast as they can when it seems like they might be the ones that have to fight it.

I got sent a video of a Russian soldier going for a shit and a drone dropping a granade blowing the shit(literally) out of him.
If any Russians have seen that I can imagine they'd run away from Russia sharpish.

Fighting a war for a civilian is terrifying.
Fighting a poorly managed war you don't believe in against a motivated enemy armed with the latest in weaponry in a Ukranian Winter. Mmmm OK.

I only found out yesterday how well the army of Finland is drilled at dealing with a Russian invasion. When I was in the military (more than 20 years ago) it was all about preparing for an Eastern invading force. Quite a lot of emphasis on winter warfare for infantry as the assumption is that it's where Russia would (again) be at its weakest. Somehow the plan was to hold them off until winter and then clean up. We had some WW2 veterans come and talk about their morphine fuelled campaigns. Fun stuff. From what I heard recently they were working a lot on preparedness against cyberattacks. But for some reason there hasn't been anything very damaging done against Ukraine on that front.

I think if I was forced to go and fight I would go through the motions then at the earliest opportunity (to be chosen carefully or get shot in the head by my own team) surrender and go to a nice cosy Ukrainian jail for a bit.

They claim it’s Russian land. nato weapons then get used to try to get the land back. Putin says Russia is under attack and threatens Nukes unless they stop. They don’t stop.

The stories emerging about the conscription are absolutely heartbreaking tbh. Also slightly hilarious. Warhawks arguing that they shouldnt be conscripted because they are patriots. They should be sending anti-war protesters who would definitely choose to fight if they were sent to the front lines and had a rifle shoved into their hands.

had a rifle shoved into their hands. In some cases, apparently Moisin M1891s (along with some very second hand WW2 kit, such as helmets and rucksacks). Fuck taking that shit into combat. (unverified, fwiw)
