Yeah I doubt the Evening Standard is going to be wound up anytime soon. I wonder when we'll see Lebedev at No.10 again

Good article from RTE about what sanctions could be imposed. www.rte.ie/news/world/2022/0222/1282256-sanctions-russia-explained/Seems even the lightest ones would make Russia feel it. Nord 2 shutdown is good but Russia wouldn't feel it short term as its not operational. But taking them off SWIFT makes international trade extremely difficult. It's an interesting one because if you throw all the sanctions at them now, there's nothing really stopping Putin from going 'Well it can't get worse' and continue his push through to take all that's left. The balance has to be just right.

Blonde twat announcing sanctions in parliament now
Edit:
Five Russian banks sanctioned. Three individuals sanctioned (presumably Putin's buddies)

Sanctions on individuals are weak. They just move their cash back.
Real sanctions are on institutions and infrastructure, locking them out of global economy.

I wonder when we'll see Lebedev at No.10 again Well, Boris has already made Jr a life peer and him and his dad are dyed-in-the-wool Putinites. Should really be booted out, the pair of them. Johnson is talking tough because he needs to appear tough, but I have no doubt he's hoping it'll all blow over before he actually has to do anything. He'll waffle and bluster and not impose any sanctions, whilst the rest of Europe cuts ties and freezes assets. Because he's a cunt.

I'm shocked. Shocked, I tell you.
His speech is 100% bluster, 0% actual action.

Jeez PM is just so much gob shite.
It's even more awful when applied to grave matters of international security. No real thought and gravity in the words.

Mrs stoof works in financial crime, she’s having a fucking nightmare of it today navigating the sanctions. Russian money is spread all through our financial services so we get hit just as hard as they do when sanctions roll in

The issue is that for the UK it's going to come down to political will. And given that our current Tory government are up to their eyeballs in Russian dark money pretty much guarantees that all we'll hear is a lot of 'tough' rhetoric coupled with ultimately meaningless sanctions, which will amount to negligible rubbles to Putin. In a world where we were actually still of international relevance, and our leaders were not effectively in hock to Russia, then what we should be seeing is numerous London-based Russian oligarchs, those who are unable to clearly and satisfactorily account for their wealth, having their accounts and properties frozen for the foreseeable. Threatening Putin's finances is genuinely the only card the UK really has to play here. But it won't happen, of course. Forget freezing just seize and auction the assets, give everyone a tiny tax break with the proceeds and bob's your maxwell. CON +30, Bojo immortalised as this century's Churchill.

Because it was the IEA, I was instantly suspicious. Easy to say, but Starmer went in quite hard in what he thinks we should do.

A barrage of sanctions which he won't hesitate to use, apparently. But is somehow not using.

Some pretty tough rhetoric from BoJo the clown and the government, too. Talking about "a barrage of sanctions", including freezing assets and restricting economic activity in the UK for Putin's mates. Hard to imagine that it's not just posturing, though. Given our first set of sanctions are fucking shit... yes. They'll never properly bite the hand that feeds them. Pff just heard the sanctions are on a couple banks and a couple individuals. What a let down. This is phase 1 remember. They haven't actually started a full scale invasion yet. ...and yet, by comparison the first set of EU sanctions appear to be decently meaty. Plus Germany pulling the plug on Nordstream 2. Related, a Tory on the BBC said that "We must not impose sanctions on Russia that will hurt us more than it will hurt them...". I assume he meant the Tory party rather than the UK.
