Then you get the odd zombie whose head pops after one or two shots and it's incredibly satisfying.

RNG headshots for Resident Evil have always been par for the course since the very first game (for the handguns anyways). I quite like it. Not quite. Some shots were criticals but even if they weren't, they did something. Contrast this against shots that do visible damage in the remake, indicating that you didn't miss but they don't really do anything unless the invisible dice agree that your shot does.
That's frustrating bullshit, just implement auto-aim like the original then so I don't have to bother with aiming then. I can't stand being expected to expend the effort of aiming only for a bad dice roll to make it pointless.

Finished Emily's story too now (when you just run through the game and only watch the cutscenes, turns out 5 hours is enough). It's a bit of a missed chance. I hoped it would show some things that went unexplained in Carnby's path, but nope, it's basically the same story with a different main character. What happens to Carnby, happens to Emily if you choose her, and vice versa. That's a shame. On the other hand, cutscenes and dialogue do change, and Emily's story goes a bit deeper on the main plot. In any case, this is a more "meta" story than I had expected .

Just got it on series x, and it comes on 2 discs and it downloaded a patch with was about 27 gig (when you download a patch it only pulls some of the original data from the disc it needs) but I guess they shrunk the install from release?

I never thought I would, but I kind of miss multi-disc games nowadays. I'm not sure why, maybe I just miss chunky quad jewel cases and the nice full colour manual.
I can't even remember my last multi-disc horror game, tending to be shorter games they've been kind of rare from the PS2 onward. Maybe D2 on the Dreamcast? That was three or four discs.

The shooting in Alone in the dark feels really bad, something like b tier game on 360 or even ps2. The reactions from the monsters on chapter 1 are pretty naff when you blast them. Also Hopper runs slow (maybe too many donuts)

For some reason I totally forgot about the original version of Resident Evil 4, I think that was one of the last... Well, besides all those 360 games.

Yeah, that totally slipped my memory.
I remembered Twin Snakes and Killer 7 being multi disc games, but RE4 was just a single disc game in my head. Weird.

Chapter 3 in Alone in the dark is a bit shit so far, even with the new patch this week, got stuck on the scenery twice avoiding this enemy.
I remember really liking Alone in the dark on Dreamcast (was ported to ps2 later) maybe they would of been better off doing a good remaster of that game - new updated controls improve textures etc
btw xbox has the unhalloween sale, but Daymare 1994 sandcastle is still too expensive right now

I think I still have the dreamcast alone in the dark: a new nightmare somewhere. And I'm sure my dreamcast is in a box under the bed. I definitely know where the controllers are, along with the sega steering wheel controller and wacky races (and I'll fight anyone that says wacky races is better on x, y, z console, because the dc version is superlative).
I need to dig this all out. Just need to check if I need an av lead or not. Probably will. I think iirc it uses a tape cassette type of power lead which I'll have somewhere.
Should be fun!

I gave Alone in the Dark New Nightmare a go last year, it's a bit of a trying experience. Like, being expected to push the action button on a particular spot in a pitch black corridor because you're expected to know that's there's an invisible light switch there.
I think it's one of those games where you need to go massively out of spec on the brightness calibration just to see items and game critical objects. Modern displays are probably mostly to blame, all the classic survival horror games were calibrated for CRTs.

Posted in the completed games thread about the new alone in the dark game and tbh I think its very disappointing. Can't see making its budget back

Zombie Army Trilogy
The just add zombies wave has given us games like Yakuza Dead Souls and Red Dead Redemption Undead Nigtmare, infamous games that typically struggle to hold together under the strain of zombies breaking apart systems built for an entirely different type of game. I thought Zombie Army Trilogy was some sort of spin-off repackage of the COD zombie mode but it turns out to be a repackage of Sniper Elite with zombies.
We get rather generic maps and zombies with spice added via elite special types. Graphics are kind of plain but that's not necessarily a bad thing since it leaves lots of overhead, you can even play single player with four player zombie spawns without the engine struggling. Though, you will struggle and probably run out of ammunition. Weapon switching is fluid and intuitive and mechanics function adequately albeit in a no-frills manner. There is nothing particularly exciting to find here, the most charming aspect is the 80's John Carpenter style synth music that sometime breaks out and signals the arrival of waves of zombies. I wish there was more of the music to add much needed flavour to proceedings.
Still, at the end of the day I find myself more interested in playing the somewhat broken Yakuza Dead Souls, it all comes down to charm in the end. Perhaps in multi-player the fun factor multiplies, otherwise Zombie Army Trilogy is one of the less interesting offerings. For a few Pounds more you can have Resident Evil Revelations 2's Raid Mode which absolutely crushes what Trilogy is offering, just on zombie star quality alone. Even the elderly Operation Raccoon City wins hands down, Lickers, Hunters, Mr X... Etc. In a game of this sort the enemies are probably the most important characters and they needed to put more work into making them memorable and interesting characters.
If the price is right and you just want to shoot zombies, it's an option, far from the best option but it's there. Now I want a new Resident Evil Revelations 2 style Raid Mode with John Carpenter 80s style synth music.

Just watching shillup's weekly news video and the Alone in the dark devs suffered lay offs and its unlikely to get sequel.
Companies do need to think about sales vs budget

Re zombie army, multi player is the key ingredient. Blasting through with a few friends and it really does elevate itself. For a single player experience there are better options.

I don't think anybody was expecting a franchise comeback. We got this one game, for what it is.
I just don't see the point in having multiple Alone in the Dark reboots all with competing stories and versions of characters, that's a gamble unless one of the reboots becomes such a breakout hit it eliminates all the other games in the public consciousness. They should have adhered really closely to the original game, rather than seeking to replace it with a competing story that wastes loads of money introducing a cast of extraneous characters that aren't in the original game.
