People picking up the rebranding of Xbox Game Pass to Microsoft Game Pass, adding fuel to the fire. The story is getting away from them. All I can think of is I wish the likes of Chad Warden were still about. Console fanboy wars seemed so much purer back then compared to now, showing off his PS Triple compared to Xbox's 'Gaylo'. Sup bitches.

Apparently that's Game Stop using the corporate name rather than sign of a change.
Though some believe Xbox is getting changed to Windows Gaming

I would really like them to nip this as it's getting tiring with all the 'Xbox goes 3rd party', 'No more consoles' stuff all over news sites.
I really can't see them just dropping the Series consoles about halfway through their usual cycle. Probably be some older 1st party games going to PS5/Switch and thats it. Sea of Thieves on more platforms would be ok apart from all those new people to come and sink me.

Yeah I know Spencer said next week but maybe just get whatever it is out the way.
Pretty sure sites are about to say MS are sending all unsold consoles to Mars.

Did read the digital only Series X had been canned but the next console will have a disk drive accessory for those that want it.

Yeah I think this will be the last gen MS and Sony have built in disc drives.

They all jumped on the Gamestop tweet yesterday only to find out it was a mistake and they used Xbox corporate name rather than Xbox Game Pass.

Something like 92% of game sales of 2023 were digital and that stat will likely only grow. I think I would have preferred a disc less X if it was £100 cheaper. I bought sekiro and 2077 dirt cheap because of the drive but other than that everything is digital. Hell I even bought dune 4k on the Xbox store to watch so I haven't even used it as a movie player more than a handful of times.

Basically only use my PS5 as a blu-ray player nowadays. Pretty much everything released on there comes to PC and I'll always choose to play on that rather than a console (bar the odd Sony produced game that I decide not to wait the 12+ months to come to PC, such as Spider-Man).
Appreciate I'm probably in the minority, but if neither of the main consoles have a disc drive then I don't see much point in me owning them.

Disc drive will be an accessory IMO.
I still get 4k films. Quality is just better than digital.

It will be sad day when you can't buy games on disc as I don't want to be stuck with a game that I can't sell/trade or even give away. I liked playing dead island 2 but didn't want to play it after finishing it. Atlas fallen was an POS, the star trek telltale style game was good but wanted to sell it afterwards. Even if there is add on drive it will not be widely supported
Also people posted a great screen grab from twitter of complete over reaction of MS news, the guy sold all his xbox stuff and posted the receipt!

Is there really much of a difference, aside from Dolby Vision?

That's a pretty big difference though if you care enough to be using a UHD instead of streaming stuff

From everything I've seen (not recently, admittedly, so they may have delivered updates) even a fairly entry level dedicated player will be better across the board. And of the consoles, the PS5 player is better than the Xbox in terms of picture sharpness. Apparently the Series S is worse than the X too.
If you care enough to be talking about the improvement of 4k discs versus streaming, I wouldn't have thought you'd be using arguably the worst player available. As an add-on functionality for a console, I guess they're fine though.

My only BD player is my Series X and I pretty much only buy UHD discs. I can definitely notice the quality increase over traditional Blu-rays, far more than a "4K" stream versus an "HD" stream.
However, I do think a separate 4K Blu-ray player would not only be better picture-wise but would be a lot less faffy to use (and the SX is very loud when playing discs). Unfortunately at the moment we're a bit "minimalist" around the TV so I don't know where I'd fit one without essentially reorganising the entire living room.

I don't know about the Xbox, but the big lack you have on the PS5 from a standalone player is the Dolby Vision. They might have said they would be adding it at some point or it was at least assumed by quite a few places that they would (it is a simple process that can be done via firmware update, but they have to pay for the licence), but seems unlikely it will be added now. Even without that, it is certainly a noticeably better picture than a 4k stream and sound quality is a lot better (you also likely only benefit much more from the Dolby Vision on an OLED, which I don't have).
A standalone player likely will also give you better upscaling for standard Blu-ray discs. You are paying a hell of a lot more for the player though and, for the price, the consoles are a good option.

I find it's pot luck trying to watch blurays on the Series X as to whether or not it will even recognise the disc.

I'm sure the rumours will quieten down a bit now until Phil's announcement next week...

RE: UHDBR on consoles. If they are genuinely not as sharp a picture as a dedicated player, I simply don't have the eyesight to tell the difference. It also doesn't make much sense to me that there would be a difference on that score, unless the consoles have some ill conceived picture processing or something.
However, on a good TV Dolby Digital is noticeably more advanced than HDR10. This should be your main reason for a dedicated player IMO.
Somewhat ironic that the streaming services can all do it. Between a UHD in HDR10 and a 4K stream in DV I'd probably watch the streamed version

I always found 4k streams to be like regular Blu rays in quality. UHD blurays being in another level.

Hahahaha!
I think it was for general media playback. I was reading a thread and didn't connect the dots on that one.
