The thing about Another World is that it was absolutely unique. There was nothing else quite like it at the time - that alien vibe, the sense of being lost. It hasn't aged well for sure - like a substantial number of games on all platforms from the era - but in context it was an absolute blast. I mean, we're talking about it 25+ years later.

(btw: I love the fact that the Series thread is now basically 80s and 90s conslols vs. compoopers. FUCK YOU, MICROSOFT, FOR HAVING NO FUCKING GAMES SO THERE'S NOTHING ELSE TO TALK ABOUT)

It's because we are all getting far too old, isn't it?
Nostalgia has really got its hooks in me at the moment and probably why I'm enjoying the Switch so much right now, playing Dread and Tropical Freeze have scratched that itch.

What a gloriously derailed thread!
Another World got brought up in a recent Digital Foundry vid for Metroid Dread. Some of the links he made were tenuous, but for some you can definitely see the influence of AW all these years later.
For some reason I've never played it despite loving Flashback. Might have to fire it up on my emulation machine.

Couch co op/versus with my mates in high school and college years are some of my fondest gaming memories, all on console Golden Axe, Street Fighter 2, Mario Kart, WWF No Mercy, Tekken 2, Twisted metal, Virtua Fighter, Sega Rally, Pilot Wings 64, Mario Kart 64 etc. Virtua Fighter blew my mind as a ten year old when I first played it in the arcade. VF2 was something magical from the future when I first saw it in the arcade in Alton Towers.

I was working by then so could afford it all. Other than the birth of my kids I don't think I've ever been so happy in my life...

I do find myself playing particular consoles intensively though… Subnautica had me glued to the PS5 and now Metroid Dread is making me put every gaming moment I have into the Switch. Definitely planning to stick with Ghost of Tsushima properly after that, so it’ll be back to the PS5.
I’m sure I’ll be back on the Xbox soon enough when there’s a new shiny. (Halo and Forza)
Tbh it’s just different games getting their hooks into me, rather than any platform.
Which is exactly as it should be.

My upbringing was similar to Dave_McCoy and clemfandango.
I didn't play much PC at all until maybe The Witcher 2? There was a bit of World of Warcraft before then, and when I was young, I had Doom II, Heretic, Quake and Descent, but basically nothing inbetween.
So to me, video games were Japanese, and occasionally British (Psygnosis and DMA/Rockstar, mainly).
I also grew up in arcades, so I gravitated towards Sega's consoles at the start, though I've always had PlayStations and Nintendos as well. Although it's less evident now, as they've shifted more towards PS over the years, to me Xbox always felt like the convergence of a Sega spiritual successor and PC gaming, which I'd say accounts for both lines of opinion in this thread.
And yes, Virtua Fighter is incredible, and 3 in particular really blew my mind as a young lad. How had graphics advanced so much so quickly??!

Might have to fire it up on my emulation machine. I had it the Amiga back in t'day and I remember replaying the first level or two because I couldn't get any farther. Like someone said, it's almost Dragon's Lair-y in that you were sometimes required to perform one unique (sometimes context-sensitive) task at exactly the right moment, but you were often able to watch and memorise what was going on which helped suggest what to do (rather than always finding out after death). Eventually I got a guide in Amiga Action or something and, following it, managed to complete the game - one of the very (very!) few games I completed without a cheat mode. I bought it again on the Xbox One about six years or so ago, and whilst it's very "of its time" I think the atmosphere and controls hold up, and the very stylised polygonal graphics have aged quite well (I think the console versions have been up-rezzed a bit). Yes, there's some trial and error, but as an adult you can spot the context clues more easily, and whilst I obviously remembered a fair bit of it, I was able to complete it without Googling (it helps that it's quite short). So I'd definitely recommend giving it a go. You might need some steer if you've literally never played it, especially as pretty much the first screen has something that'll kill you if you don't interact with it exactly right. But I still enjoyed it, even in 2015-ish.

The failure of the Dreamcast always bothered me because it was the pure arcade experience in your home that was always the draw for me when I was younger. I don't think anything has come close since, although the Switch is becoming that new home. I wished there were more Dreamcast ports though.

Despite being often mentioned alongside Flashback and Prince of Persia (probably due to the 2D camera and rotoscoped animations), those two games are much closer to each other than AW ever was. Now I'm sitting here wondering why POP1/2 never saw a re-release of any kind. Some rights dispute between Ubisoft and Mechner maybe?

Maybe they consider the unlockables during the Sands of Time trilogy to be enough.
I think Mechner and Ubi are still on good terms, as he has a blog, and on it he's spoken about being in the loop (but not on the development in any capacity) with the Sands of Time Remake's progress, and he's shown his support for their work.

The unlockables weren't available on PC though. Surely they could make some money by just selling the games on GOG or something? It's not like it would take a ton of effort to just bundle them with Dosbox.

There was an XBLA version of Prince of Persia, but I can't remember if it was just a graphical update or more of a "remake". I think it may still have had the flip-screen approach?

It was a remake. The layout of the map was identical to the originals, but it had some of the movements of the SoT trilogy, such as a wall run and backflip, which made it much easier overall. I quite liked it actually. It felt fluid and fun to play. They also remade the second one, but I think it only released on mobile.

POP Classic was a great remake, managed to feel like the original but also modernized at the same time. Shame it's stuck on Xbox. At least it's backward compatible.

So when exactly do Xbox mini fridge orders open??! Tomorrow, I was told around 9am by my local store. Every browser I’ve tried today has not been able to show the Game site. Thought the store and the website are different companies I guess they are both going to take preorders.

And to carry on the derailment in the POP vein, I still remember sitting in my mate’s bedroom whilst he loaded a new C64 game from his contacts in the States. Karateka looked amazing.

Just to derail this thread a little and step away from the retro discussion, to the surprise of absolutely nobody, I just changed my 3 year XBL Gold into 3 years GPU. Much obliged to everyone for enlightening me!

Much obliged to everyone for enlightening me! Can I ask, did you lose the '17' on your profile when the previous sub lapsed and it has reset to 1, or did it revert to 17 when you resubbed? Ta.

That 17 flourish is still on my profile. I renewed less than24 hours after my subscription expired, so that may have helped. Who knows.

Wife just preordered a mini fridge for our kids from the local Game. Apparently due in 'December' but not guaranteeing pre-Christmas deliveries yet.

Weirdest damn thing is Game's website is not reachable from any of my wi-fi addresses. Can only hit it via my mobile 4G. Some may say that is a blessing, but it seems my router is being jumpy when it comes to their site.

2TB Seagate Expansion Card incoming for $400. A straight conversion puts that at around £290, but I expect you'll have to account for VAT as well, so probably £350ish?
