Yep. Something that was literally never used in any commercially shipped game and was aggressively used by Segaβs marketing team to stoke the fanboy wars.

Literally the only time Nintendo has been current was during the Gamecube and Wii years, and Wii was really just a Gamecube that went to a vocational school (I struggle to call it a Pro). NES came long after Atari and Colecovision, SNES came long after Turbo Grafix and Genesis, N64 came a year or two after Saturn and PlayStation, Wii U came a year before Sony and Microsoft moved onto PS4 and XB1, Switch came right between the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X... Nintendo's whole MO is being behind the competition. I think youβre being a bit unfair there , SNES and N64 were more powerful than the consoles they came after, you canβt say that they werenβt current, GameCube was also more powerful than PS2, itβs only from Wii onwards .. I meant more time frame than power. Wii is when they gave up that fight, but their release schedule was always a bit behind the others.

It rendered double the lines Jambo, thatβs double the power! Technically, that was only in PAL regions. NTSC Gamecubes supported progressive scan, and most games did actually output in it in the US and Japan. However, Wii games all supported 16:9, where Gamecube often stuck to 4:3, so it's still more pixels per image. But at the same time, they sometimes had to cut down on graphical features to accommodate, like the water ripples in Metroid Prime.

I think we can pretty much all agree the Wii is the console with the most shit games. Not talking about the number of good games just the amount of utter shovelware on the console.

Oh for sure, it penetrated parts of the market which were previously untapped. Those parts of the market have disappeared again now though, well they did while the Wii was still alive as the parents/grandparents that had them left them to gather dust after a while.

Do you have any figures to back that up? The console market seems much bigger now than pre-Wii.

I don't need figures to back it up, common sense tells you that the grandparents that grabbed one for Wii sports haven't bought another console since. The size of the console market is irrelevant to the conversation when demographics are being discussed.

PS2 being the biggest selling console ever, by some margin, would suggest otherwise

Yeah, I don't know if it changed the gaming landscape forever. I just think it was an interesting time where one of the big companies was doing something genuinely different. There was a lot to talk about, even it was filthy casuals

Oh totally, it was quite impressive on its ability to get everyone involved in games, well, when I say 'games' I really mean Wii Sports just that singular game. After that they all fucked off to mobile games like Candy Crush. It was a really strange time where people were convinced that mobile games were going take over traditional home consoles which lead to the Ouya and I distinctly remember countless gaming websites crowing how the Ouya was perhaps going to dethrone all these big companies, it's mental when you look back at it today that people really thought a cheap Android chipset with a HDMI out port that played mobile games was going to be the big disruptor. But I guess people really bought into it because you know, it had a fan so people could really crank up the graphics.

In the end, it was its lack of fans that killed it. It's ironic if you think about it

Quite amazing knowledge of demographics from common sense there , no adult that bought Wii as first console bought another, definitely none of them bought a Switch and the only people that were in the Wii expanded market were OAP.. Impressive.

Dreamcast is still the best though Man, that was really a fun af console. I still think that version of Soul Calibur still holds up.

From anecdotal experience those Wii people moved to mobile and F2P games, most of the kids I teach play mobile games more than anything.

Yeah, I remember thinking Soul Calibur I looked better than II. III eventually topped it though. DOA2 also looks incredible for the era, and Shenmue pretty much topped everything on PS2 until MGS2. I think it's a bit underrated for its graphical prowess due to there being a lot of PS1 and N64 ports that basically looked like high res PC ports of N64 games. It was using arcade hardware though, which was really impressive back in 98 and 99.

Youβre both right, no need for this petty bickering. The newly captured demographics for the Wii (families playing Wii sport etc) mostly floated to mobile/casual gaming. The existing demographics for PlayStation and Xbox (more traditional βgamersβ) expanded and grew.

Man, I don't think I've ever been as impressed by graphics as the first time I saw arcade screenshots of Virtua Fighter 3. When Tekken 3 released a year or two later and it was only catching up to VF2, I was so disappointed.
Ridge Racer series on PS1 probably looked better than Daytona and Sega Rally on Saturn though.

I obviously can't be sure but I imagine some of the Wii family demographics ended up getting the Switch, Nintendo clearly was aiming to include them in their advertising and I bet the new Switch Sports game sells shitloads.

Wasn't bickering, just made a couple of comments regarding the Wii. Unfortunately it's impossible to discuss anything about Nintendo on this forum because someone gets pissy the moment you say something about them that's less than 100 percent glowing. It was the same on the old place unfortunately it's carried over here due to the same person doing the same shit.
