I just upgraded from a CV1 to a Quest 2. The inside out tracking and wirelessness is great. I believe the G2 is a better headset, right? But you need to tether it to a PC. (I note it's minimum spec is a gtx 1080, I only have a 1070 ) On the Quest 2 you are not locked to Oculus ecosystem when using Link to a PC, eg can load up steam. I love the way I can take the headset with me to another room or location and put it on and after a quick boundary set (literally 10 seconds) I am ready to go. But if you only ever want to play PC games, and have a powerful PC, maybe it isn't the best? Well that is the issue for me: I do only ever really play PC games on my rift, but the rift is also so cumbersome, what with it being reliant on external sensors and a rather thick wire, that it's impractical to do much else. I'd probably play Superhot VR more if I didn't run the risk of property or physical damage. I too made the jump from CV1 to Quest 2. It's great, still get to do all the PCVR stuff but completely untethered. With the Elite battery strap combined with one of these Aukey mini power bank (don't seem to be able to get them in the UK any more) you easily get over 4+ hours of game time, more than enough for a long sim session on something like ETS2. I haven't even come close to running things down below 50% battery yet and I've spent hours in it. I got a cheap jogging belt too, and I can slip the battery in the back pocket, connected to the back of the battery strap, it provides hours of wireless VR gaming for more stand up physical stuff like Skyrim VR and the like. As well as PCVR, there's some really good Quest 2 stuff as well. I still find connecting through VR desktop works better than Oculus Airlink for most things; most but not all. I'm sure the G2 looks great but, A: It's tethered, and wireless is defo the way to go; I couldn't go back to a wired headset now. B: The controllers are crap. They take 2 AA's and eat them for breakfast; I think you get about 10-15 hours play time, compared to the Oculus controllers which just seem to go on for weeks and weeks on a single AA. They don't have capacitive touch sensing. Anyway, games. Some great titles out this month. Song in the Smoke and Shadowgate, both out and both look very good. Lone Echo 2 and Resident Evil 4 both due out this month too. But there's only one I'm going to buy this month, and as much as really want to play Resident Evil 4, it's got to be Lone Echo 2.

Praydog has announced RE7 support for his mod with this test video. It’s in the very early stages right now but it’s looking promising. Better late than never lol

No games? So is it just for porn? Can't get sadder than beating your meat to VR porn while wearing insect eye goggles.

So here's a game made by one guy that is kind of topping the vr charts right now that pretty nifty and doing something new. The gameplay is a bit basic, you're stepping on blocks and rollers and you have a torch and whip and you're solving puzzles. The smart bit is that the way the levels are laid out and because you're stepping backwards on the rollers you constantly move around your play space (which has to be at least 2x2 meters) without ever hitting the walls. I've played it on Index and the cable does get annoying, but I think it's also out on Oculus which I imagine is even better. It's pretty cheap too at €15.

Air Link is definitely the way to play this. Got my Quest 1 back yesterday and it’s a lot easier walking backwards and stuff when you don’t have to worry about cables. The dude making this clearly states he has no plans to port this to Quest natively, which is a bummer because it would do well on that platform. Also, it’s surprisingly intense in spots, and right now I’m kind of lost in the labyrinth of moving platforms.

Now I've built a PC I've dug out my Quest 1 to enjoy some PCVR - I've started with IL2 because I'm a sucker for flight sims, and it's so, so immersive. I'm playing with the WW1 planes and it's so fun having a nice slow dogfight with the AI where you can very quickly flick around to end up behind the dastardly hun. There's a real joy in ducking down behind your gunsight and seeing holes appear in the other planes. Really cool thing – though it's also a bit terrifying when you get into an unrecoverable spin in a Sopwith Camel and spend a whole 45 seconds watching the ground get closer and closer… bit disconcerting in VR!

Having not got a fucking clue about VR I'm trying to find out what this Oculus Quest thing my son has just rather optimistically put on his Christmas list.
Am I right in thinking it's standalone? How doe it work and what games etc can it do? Importantly, is it worth getting?

Yes, it’s standalone. Basically it has a low-power mobile processor in it so it runs its own games and you don’t need anything else to get cracking with it (other than a Facebook account, but that requirement is being removed at some point).
It has its own operating system, so when you put it on your face you can browse the store, or use the Oculus app on your phone (or a web browser I think) to download games. If you’ve never done VR it’ll blow you away and you’ll be stealing it from him. There’s a load of games now, and if you want to - you can plug it into a PC and run more resource intensive PCVR games. It’s really cool.

The only drawback for me is that Facebook is the company behind it. It is standalone and the native games run on what is essentially a mobile phone chipset. However, it is also capable of running PCVR games if you have a PC system capable of running such either through a wired connection or wirelessly with Airlink (free) or Virtual Desktop (Paid). I have no idea if it will be worth it for you and yours as everyone values things differently. I bought both the Quest and Quest 2 and despite the initial wow factor, I only ever use it anymore to get my daily exercise in.

There is (or was) a recommended age limit of 13+ for VR, if that's an issue. It may just be for the associated Facebook account but I think Valve also appllied a similar restriction.

Sadly we don't have a PC for running anything better. Just concerned that the native games won't be anything more than ones you pop on for a quick blast and there won't be anything substantial out for it, meaning he'll lose interest after a few weeks!

I think the VR problem is that most things are just pop on for a blast for a bit. There has been some more substantial bits with some money behind them, but they have mostly turned out to be either not very good (the Medal of Honour one) or exclusives (Resi 4 on Quest or Resi 7 on PSVR). Half Life Alyx also was so much better than everything else that it makes other VR games, even well regarded ones, seem incredibly mediocre.
Some of the best VR experiences have actually been the VR modes in flat screen games. I'm thinking Elite Dangerous, Star Wars Squadrons and Subnautica. Probably no coincidence that two of those are cockpit games (racing games aren't bad either, although suffer quite a bit from screen door effect on my original Vive). I also think it is great for animated film bits, that aren't hugely interactive (Dear Angelica in particular).
No idea what is actually available on Quest as a standalone, but I expect it will be mostly the equivalent of mobile games.

Super Hot was the killer app for me on the Quest when I got it back in the summer of 2019 - that and Ultrawings, a cool cartoon flight sim where you grip a pretend stick with your hand. I don’t really have room for all the jumping about and diving around of most VR FPSes, so prefer cockpit experiences. Apparently the Tie Fighter total conversion for X Wing Alliance has VR!

Quest has loads of puzzlers (I love these), beat saber, resi 4, echo VR, bridge crew, robo recall.
Personally I can't go into VR for too long so 30 min sessions are great and you'll get good mileage from the quest.

The RE2, RE3 VR mod now has melee combat from swinging your arm and weapon collision detection, all with full motion controls, not bad for a mod Mod also works with RE7 and RE8.

So I only have a Quest 1 but I have a good PC. Has anyone tried After The Fall over VD or Link? My other option is Psvr from a PS5 but I can't be bothered with the wires and camera faff.

So I've got a Quest 2 through work. I'm very impressed so far.
Looking to hook it up to my PC. It's a Ryzen 5 3600 with a GTX 970. Should I bother with that spec?

My pc is worse than that and most things run fine so that should be able to play most games.

I'd have to try it no matter pc spec, just to know. Also Beat Saber modding may be pc only, or was a year or so ago.

I think 970 is the minimum for VR (or it was a one point).

It was with the first Oculus Rift, but I imagine it's dropped with the release of the Quest.

Cheers. I will give it a go. Subnautica is on my must try list so it should run that ok hopefully.
Just played Super hot VR demo. Very impressed with the hand tracking on the quest 2. Sorcery.

Lol, oculus website says minimum is i7 9700k and a 2080.
My 7700k and 1070 worked fine when I tried it.
