Its been on another level this last year or so with Horner and Wolff. I don't think DTS is helping as it's making minor celebrities out of them too and Horner is definitely revelling in that a bit more of the two.
I've found it so much better since I started ignoring most of that shit, honestly. The press game in the F1 paddock is the most toxic, incestuous and opportunistic of any sport in the world. Alonso started really figuring it out last year and it was funny hearing him call them out on it, and I'll miss Raikkonen on the grid purely for his ability to see right through that shit and go about his day ignoring the shit out of them.

Agreed - not really fair for me to call out Horner when Wolff is nearly as bad but in different ways.

I think fans should at least try and hold the sports they follow to account, either directly or via the media. Sure money usually wins, but fans can threaten the value of the asset and that can occasionally have meaningful impacts like last year's European Super League getting binned off (at least for a while), or Man U fans blocking BSkyB's acquisition of the Club.
I guess I'm just not as pessimistic that F1 as a sport rather than entertainment construct is a lost cause just yet. This is not the same as other Championship controversies like '89, '90, '94, '97 because it's an integrity issue rather than a driving standards issue.
I really don't think it was a minority. The outcry after Abu Dhabi was as close to a majority as I can recall after an F1 controversy. The fact it was dodgy/wrong was more or less unanimous amongst all the teams and drivers that aren't sponsored by Red Bull. It boils down to, is everyone cool with the fact that the race director can arbitrarily move cars around?
Similarly, I don't think I've seen a single credible motorsport journalist or publication directly defend Masi's actions (some defend his intentions but that's a different point) and many have continued to ask awkward questions in press conferences. As it was the centrepiece of the season, there was loads of cut through, with people who don't follow F1 interested in what happened.
This, as much as Mercedes's pressure, is why the FIA couldn't just carry on as normal and had to do something, even if it couldn't swallow its pride enough to amend the result.
Sure, the record books will show Max as 2021 WDC and after 50+ years no one will remember the specifics, but people do remember controversial championships throughout living memory and it does inform how legacies are viewed.
e.g. Hunt fortuitously won in '76 because Lauda had his accident and then bravely refused to race in the torrential rain in Japan. Prost won in '89 by crashing into Senna and vice versa in '90. They made a movie about both and both are still discussed today.
Of course, casual fans won't remember but people who care about motorsport do and they are generally the ones that fork out for expensive subscriptions that drives sponsorship incomes and buy race tickets that pay for those hosting fees.

If anything they've tripled down with that safety car change anyway. Changing any to all only feeds into the 'any =/= all' narrative they've held ground on since the start.
If Perez had been the one that crashed out I might feel a bit more angry towards Red Bull defending their victory when they are being asked about it every 5 seconds, but they were simply opportunistic. Pretty much every team in the paddock has a siege mentality when backed against a wall, so it's hard to act like what they are doing is unique.

Ricciardo has been cleared to race this weekend, so that's good. Wonder how much the lack of testing will hurt him.

Hearing McLaren have had huge issues with their brakes makes me really fear for him this season with him being seemingly ultra-sensitive on them. He needs a big performance relative to Norris this year otherwise his stock will probably never recover.

Yeah maybe. His issues last year were supposed to be because he couldn't rotate the car on the brakes as well as Lando. Think it was low and mid speed he struggled and the be regs have effectively slowed them further.
Then again there's also a theory that Button-esque smooth technique will be needed to keep the floor stable. If that's true it's not really Lando's natural style either.
Will be an interesting subplot for sure.

So McLaren have landed Google as a sponsor and literally have Chrome wheels now. Has there ever been a team principal as good as Zak Brown from a commercial standpoint? When he came in their lack of sponsors made them look like a privately entered team from a feeder series and now they are basically the Manchester United of F1. Insane turnaround.

Bah, Vettel out with COVID.
Hulkenberg in though, so that's cool.

He's so impressive isn't he? Just seems like the kind of boss we'd all like to have. Competent and approachable.
Basically made turning an F1 team around look easy. Hire good people, cut the fat, get new sponsors and ensure everyone's enjoying themselves by being the anti-Ron Dennis. Plus he's still got his very successful United Autosports Team on the side. Oh, and they've entered Indycar fairly successfully, and might enter FE and Le Mans in near future.

I do wonder how much impact Lando is having on the commercial front. He's got next breakthrough F1 star written all over him.
He's surely Google's wet dream in terms of his social media savvy. I can't think of another sportsman that manages their own socials so well. I suppose the British tabloid press will do the build him up and tear him down thing soon, but for now, everyone likes Lando.

Still not a massive fan of the livery on the McLaren. Maybe because I grew up with red/white and the silver/chrome. (and yes I know it's traditional colours).

I know that the mean, but I do like the papaya too. The launch livery was good and it seems to be gradually getting worse as they get more sponsors.

It is very much a moving billboard, but you can't fault them. They need to try and keep up with the works teams any way they can. I'll take a quick McLaren with a shitter livery over a better looking one that's trundling around the back again.
The McLaren most burned into my mind has always been the Hakkinen/Coulthard, West era silver and black one. Just brings back so many memories for me from that time period seeing that car.

It looks like Verstappen's car did after Bottas put a hole in it at Hungary last year!

Must say I really like the new McLaren livery with the blue-ish stuff added. Seems like that could handle a ton of sponsors added without getting all comical, in contrast with the more orange-dominated version from before. In my opinion of course. Thought that picture above here looked kinda cool. Also. Seems like F1've rolled out a redesign of their TV graphics this week. This will take some time to get used to for me.
edit: Also, FP2, still early but enjoying the order at the bottom of the top 10, Bottas, Perez, Schumacher, Hamilton, Magnussen. If Danny Ric can find his form, and Haas will start competing for points, I think I'll enjoy this season more than I expected.

Ollie Bearman delivered on the hype this morning.
Won the F3 comfortably but had a 5s post race penalty for track limits (which he claims he never received a warning about) so classified second in the end.
I think we've got another Russell/Norris level British talent here. He'll also have the advantage of Prema as he's Ferrari academy, so he really looks well placed for the next couple of years.

Pretty gutted about the fact that Mclaren has the combination of being slow and unreliable.
KMag and Hulkenberg provide some uncomfortable perspectives on the true performance level of Schumacher and Stroll. If Hulk drives away from Stroll tomorrow, got to be questioning whether he's actually the best Aston Martin contracted driver.

What’s going on with track limits then? Hopefully they are not going to apply penalties after the session.
