Le mans shaping up quite nicely. Pretty close in the top class.

Thankfully Le Mans is easy to just pay to view. Discovery+ is £6.99 for one month and you're straight in.
I'm sure the coverage itself will be the usual mixed bag, the absolutely dire Le Mans timing graphics were rolled out yet again yesterday (can't believe they've not had a rethink by now), and the commentators wittered on as usual with some fairly stale banter amongst the interesting insights. Ant Davidson did rescue it a fair bit though. Hopefully, he gets plenty of hours during the race.
Anyway, I love Le Mans weekend. It's Test Cricket for petrolheads. I watch the start and then keep it on in the background for 24hrs and dip in and out while doing stuff around the house.
For those not aware, Jenson Button, Jimmie Johnson, and Mike Rockenfeller are running in a heavily modified Nascar. Looks a bit ridiculous but sounds amazing. Seems they are somewhere between LMP2 and GTe on pace. Will be good to follow their progress.

Never ceases to amaze me the risks some drivers take on lap one of a 24hr race.

Love that Peugeot design:
'Rear wing?'
'Nah, fuck it.'

Yeah, I'm on the fence. I see the point about a single car having a cumulative impact down the field, but this three-car thing does fall into that 'artificial' zone.

They've had three cars for a long time, and that's ok I think. The lap is too long for just one.
I also don't especially mind them grouping the classes together either (which is new). However waving cars through so they can recover multiple laps on the class leaders is not sport, it's gameshow stuff. Plus it takes bloody ages to sort. Like 30mins each time.
I was joking when I said the other day they only need to ruin the final lap of Le Mans with safety cars for the hat trick after Indy. With these new rules it could actually happen which would be a travesty. It's madness really.

This is ace. A straight fight, Ferrari Vs Toyota, 2s apart with four hours to go.
Ferrari should do it on pace, but they can't afford any mistakes or minor mechanical issues.

Watching Moto2/3 and MotoGP for the first time in a while. Would love to go to Mugello and watch. Maybe in a few years when I get a bike again.

First Ferrari top class win for almost 60 years and an LMP2 winning driver crossing the line with what appears to be a broken foot having had it run over earlier in the recs race. Pretty good.
The converted NASCAR made the end, which was a pretty amazing achievement in itself.
Alpine, BMW and Lambo join next year too!

Fairly poor Canadian GP by the usual standards. Nice to see Alonso and Hamilton racing each other, but was always pretty clear that the Aston was quicker.
Albon was great, he did superbly this weekend. Got the absolute best result possible for the team and kept it tidy.
Feel a bit for Norris. Didn't really deserve to be behind Piastri in the first place (without the red flag and penalties they'd have been rows apart at the start). The Albon train meant 5s hurt more than normal. Three world class overtaking moves, all done with brake feel and race craft rather than superior top speed. Great to see.
Not a great weekend for the various number twos: Perez and Stroll were embarrassingly slow. Russell crashed whilst trying to keep up with Hamilton and Alonso. Piastri was comfortably outraced and passed by Norris on the road again. Sainz was put in his place by Ferrari (no racing for you Sainz) and I have no clue how De Vries avoided a penalty for forcing Magnusson car down the escape road in shere desperation (not that Magnusson himself was blamelessness one corner earlier). Latifi retired early from the back and Zhou was miles off Bottas's on pace. Rare to see so many one sided team mate battles.

Usual fun with certain drivers outraged at being asked to stay on the track.

I was listening to it on the drive home (GG for putting quali for the race during work hours, F1) and they said it's the longest an RB driver has gone without making Q3 since David Coulthard?! That surely can't be right but if so, astonishingly bad from Perez.

4 Q3s missed in a row for Sergio, in the most dominant car by a substantial margin.
Apparently there were 47 deleted laps in qualifying.
Coincidentally, no one ran wide at T6 where they brought the gravel back to the track edge.

I find the complaints about track limits from Max et al pretty ridiculous. I have sympathy with the task they have, you can't see your tyres or the lines clearly from the cockpit.
However they claim it's so hard to avoid running wide and simultaneously say putting gravel there would sort it (as it has at T6). It works because you leave more margin, so you can leave more margin.
The other factor is some drivers had no laps deleted so it wasn't exactly impossible for the best drivers in the world to adhere to the rules.
Honestly I don't even mind all the deletions. I think it adds a bit of unique, legitimate sporting jeopardy to proceedings and we've been in short supply of that recently.
The stewards did a brilliant job reasonably swiftly applying the rules and should be commended.

Eeesh, Hamilton's turn to lose out to track limits today, and Perez almost got caught out again!

Watching onboard it seemed like something happened between Gasly and Perez at the start of their flying laps. Side by side almost out the final turn.
Let's see if Gasly says anything.

You've got to find it funny how not arsed all the teams and drivers sound about this farcical concept.

Hamilton was clearly a bit disappointed and slightly bitter about the circumstances but to outright say it doesn't really matter was quite funny.
It clearly does matter if you're somewhere in and around the top 8 so can get points. Though I get the fact that if you're running near the back with 5 laps to go you might as well park it and save the components. That's the major flaw of the sprint race format.
Starting P18 as he is later, he's got to go banzai for 10 laps or so to see how far he can get and then make a decision. That hydraulic issue George had seems a decent excuse to park up early...

Been another horror smash and death over at Spa today in one of the junior formula. Accident looked pretty much identical to Anthoine Hubert's (albeit in rainy conditions) a few years ago. They did some work on Eau Rogue/Raidillon recently but something needs to happen to stop crashed cars being spit back out onto the track up there.
Edit: Having read a bit into it it seems they were behind a safety car for a good chunk of the race because of the conditions, before it pulled in to give them a 1-lap dash to the finish. Couldn't make it up.

Absolutely tragic. I have now seen some footage and it does look somewhat inevitable given the spray. One car hit the wall on the office outside and then ended up on the inside quite far past the brow of the hill. That car is then collected at speed by two others that presumably couldn't see it.
It's really sad that it's basically the same as Hubert, and Jack Aitken's non fatal crash last year.
I don't want to lose Spa but clearly something has to change. Ideally it would be a technological solution that retains the character of Radillon but until that exists I think we'll have to have a chicane or something to slow them right down at the bottom of the hill.
It does sound like the safety car usage actually just made an accident more likely. Racing line got wetter, tyre temps dropped and the pack bunched up making spray worse.
Hard not to think that the race director was following the new SC precedent from F1 and Indycar in manipulating a short sprint finish. I hope this aspect isn't overlooked. What happens in F1 gets copied. Same reason safe driving standards matter more at the top.

Bernie Collins has been a brilliant addition to Sky F1. Super knowledgeable and doesn't suffer any of the dramatic nonsense.
