One thread.
My friend has been stuck on the tarmac for 3 hours with a screaming baby behind.
Good Friday.

Typically my laptop and every service on it is working just fine.
I could be sat in the garden if this stupid thing would just blue screen.

I'm not techy at all but if say all networked PCs in an org aren't able to actually log in to receive the update fix doesn't that mean IT essentially have to go around and manually do the workaround for every computer?

It depends how fucked everything is. You potentially could push a new build/rebuild out over the network but that would rely on you having something to do the pushing with. Plus you’ve got all those remote workers on potato internet and companies with shitty VPNs.
I would imagine you’d be able to get away with some kind of headless interaction to get rid of the agent but it’s going to be a while before they figure that out.
The build room is always the weak link in these scenarios. We run ransomeware sims quite often and in a code brown situation we would need thousands of endpoints rebuilding a day and IT are always quoting in the low hundreds at best.

This feels way more than someone getting fired territory and more into a company being blacklisted territory.

The compensation/legal bills are probably going to enough to sink a large company.

Pace of change and lack of governance. We see it all the time. Like 1 out of 10 of our IT changes fails which is fine if you’re doing 10 a week. You ramp that up to 100 a week because the board are demand constant innovation without your change control improving and you’re fucked.

Hopefully the disaster recovery is better than my companies. It took them 4 months to get back online for some customers haha.

We wouldn't have this problem if we had just adopted the blockchain years ago.

Some IT guy basically just confirmed this on the news just now. Manual updates all round.

I’m sure there’ll be some conspiracy that it was deliberate because it’s one of the busiest weekends of the year. I don’t know why incompetence/lack of process isn’t always the obvious reason.

I've always wondered why things don't go south more often. Aren't there things like time servers that could break everything?

Some IT guy basically just confirmed this on the news just now. Manual updates all round. As has been said, it depends on how you're set up. Many companies have user machines set to boot from network first, and a server that can provide a whole new Windows installation over the network. Those should be well off. It's also possible that the crash happens late in the Windows boot process, so that other unattended installation tools that run before it could work as well, but I'm not sure about this.

Are there no preppers out there? Thankfully I have many bottle caps in my garage next to the fridge. Drinking can be can be good for you.

Our physical hosts were all affected but easily rectified via their iDrac. Only a handful of VMs needed manual intervention.
Everything fixed in 2 business hours. Another hour or so for mopping up shitty scripts that didn’t run this morning.
Storm in a tea cup really. Hardly the global disaster the BBC are making it out to be. Guess it sucks if you’re sat in the cattle market section airport right now though
