darklingPlenty of great Sheffield bands - I don’t mind a bit of Def Leppard and loved Pulp in the 90s. Bring Me The Horizon around the time of Sempiternal were ace (and some more recent stuff is still decent). I thought of another one: Set You Free - N-TranceProper banger (as I might have said in years past) that song, but then they seemed to just chuck out novelty cover versions.

I saw them at a local music festival a few years ago and, yeah, while Set You Free is actually pretty righteous, the crowd got down more to that crappy bee gees one they did.

I never, ever got the love for Coldplay... but while everyone was gushing over Yellow (an absolute wet wipe of a song) I have to admit I thought Don't Panic was a fairly well put together song. The only one of theirs I'll admit to liking. Coldplay and Snow Patrol can fuuuuuck off. Dull as. Whilst a lot of the landfill indie bands are forgettable, I occasionally find myself quite enjoying the odd tune on the radio. But these 2 put my teeth on edge. Snow Patrol were a really different band before The Final Straw. A kind of rattly Sebadoh influenced band who’d support bands like Grandaddy and Idlewild. Then they wrote Run

simple Yes! Their first two albums were so different to The Final Straw, and *so* much better; then they wrote 'Run', as you say, and decided that being the next Coldplay was a positive career move. I'll add 'Before I Forget' by Slipknot to my titular list - try as I might, I can't take them seriously, but this is a good-ass song.

I could probably just list my entire 90's Dance playlist. Every single one is a song I like by an artist I don't.

Don't forget The Enemy, The Ordinary Boys, The Vines and The Twang! Fuck me those were dark days. Don’t forget Hard Fi! I did like stereophonics back in the day though And the American contingent, The White Stripes, The Killers, BRMC etc That whole landfill indie/garage rock period of the '00s was a cultural wasteland. I accept that the Strokes' bad a couple of tunes (Hard to Explain is still great), but they opened the door to some truly vapid, yelpy, tinny guitar bullshit. No substance.

Being in Wales, we are apparently legally obligated to have at least two Stereophonics songs piped into every retail environment on a daily basis, which has soured me on them somewhat over the years.
I will admit to a fondness for Mr Writer though, as it has such a Fuck You quality about it.
Also stuck in my brain anecdotally for years is that exchange between Kelly Jones and Simon Amstell about promotional hospitality on an episode of Never Mind The Buzzcocks:

Feels kind of harsh dunking on those three American bands when Australia was sending us bands like Jet

The Edwyncollins - A Girl Like You He had other songs?? I was actually just trying to remember the song and, once I did, thought I'd put my new found knowledge to use
I did check his Wikipedia entry first (he's got one) and he's got a few albums (last was 2019). Listened to a random track on YouTube and didn't like it. From that research I have concluded that while I like that song, I am not a fan
As for a band that is actually popular, I really like (Don't Fear) The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult but have never liked anything else I've heard by them or felt like giving them a good listen

I have a soft spot for some of those maudlin Coldplay-aping emo UK rock anthems that came out around that time. Run by Snow Patrol, Wires by Athlete. Ashes by Embrace was probably the best one, just find it really uplifting.

I liked Run by Snow Patrol a lot, and then never really liked anything they did after that. So I guess that counts.
I was kinda surprised when they apparently became a coldplay style 'even your mum likes them' band, as I seem to remember that even on Final Straw, quite a few of the songs degenerated into grinding guitars.

For some reason I have really fond memories of watching Embrace on the Glastonbury coverage around the time Drawn From Memory came out. Its not the sort of thing I was generally into at the time but it obviously clicked for some reason.
I think it was the year Travis headlined which I also remember being good but haven't watched in decades.

I can’t listen to Incubus due to the cringe lyrics, but Blood in My Mouth is ok somehow Blood on the Ground? It's got a great groove to it. But yeah, I've been listening to Incubus again recently. Musically they're great, but the lyrics are painful. Generally speaking, if I enjoyed something I tend to not stop liking it, I might not like it as much but I'll still enjoy a listen. But Incubus are one of the few bands I used to really like, that I now find hard to listen to. It's just so cringe inducing to me now, and it's mostly down to the vocals and lyrics. (I can actually pinpoint the moment I started to cringe; it was the track Are You In?)

It is a bit sad that after 'A Girl Like You' blew up that the album, 'Gorgeous George', is so slept on. Its genuinely very good. Please enjoy this absolute banger about lame wussrock:
