You can upgrade your tools?? Never found any of those. I also have a blank item slot still. I assumed that would be the stopwatch, but I think that just adds a timer for how long you have played to your pause menu (it matches the giant clock).

Oh cool I never thought to look to see if anything had changed in the menu. Yeah it's not in the blank inventory space so there's definitely something else to find. The upgraded bubble wand is great. You can just spew bubbles everywhere.
I'm finding this game stupidly relaxing. Even when it's difficult, I can't get stressed out by it. It flicks all the "ahhh this is nice" switches in my brain.

Really great game this isn't it?! So much fun to pootle around in. I've not finished it yet because the chase sequence stresses me out, but I've done a fair bit of secret hunting. Lovely stuff

Yeah it’s awesome. Every time I play it I discover something new. On 39 eggs now. It just keeps opening up and giving me new stuff. I now have something that lets me ping chests so I can see them in hidden places, and that’s not even its primary function. There’s so much hidden away.

Was listening to the Axe of Blood God podcast yesterday (mainly an RPG focused podcast, but they were discussing Animal Well) and one of them mentioned that there is another layer to this game, much like in The Witness. Supposedly, once you figure it out you do start seeing rooms differently. Also heard Matthew Castle (formerly of RPS) mention similar, although that was more just a sense he had rather than actually having uncovered it himself.
Not sure what that all refers to and don't know to what extent that actually changes things in practice. One thing I have noticed is that some of the rooms on the map look like faces, which feels like it suggests something. Not played since "finishing", so not had a chance to look more closely at that.

I had heard something similar. Seemingly getting all the eggs is layer 2 of 3 layers (layer 1 being up until the end credits).
It's starting to fucking haunt me. I can hear the animal noises in my head.
Talking of which... Try copying the ones you hear and playing them back on the flute...

There is also a tracker for candles lit. I think that it was an ice/glass wall, so assume it melts to reveal something when you have lit all the candles.

Yeah I’ve seen that. Encountered both candles I have left but no matches. Since found a match and forgot where the candles are to light one! Needless to say I’m starting to mark stuff on the map now.

So, I decided to explore elsewhere in favour of not doing the final boss, and I... think I skipped to the end of the game? Used the bubble jump to get to the top of the long vertical shaft, the lantern to get past the bird, and now there's a house and a giant clock, and a weird spinny portal thing that I can't get into. And a backpack that lets me carry 6 fireworks! I assume I have to get here the proper way to actually see credits, but still. It's pretty neat to know that you can sequence break to this extent.

Ok, I finished it for real. I had to look up the location of 10 or so eggs, but I don't feel bad about that. The game doesn't really help you track anything. The true ending was fine, I guess. I looked up what you need to open the clock doors, and... nope, fuck that. It was a fun game! I would have liked just a touch more user friendliness (eg. way way more fast travel points), but I had a good time overall. I love how packed full of secrets the world is.

I'm on around 43 eggs or so. Starting to grind to a halt now as I'm running out of places to look. Still making slow progress though. Constantly making new discoveries, even if they are tiny.
I've tried not really to look up anything but one thing I have seen is to do with that Kangaroo. May need to try something there.
Oh, and find out where I saw those bloody candles.
My watch says I'm on 11 hours. Which is nuts. I haven't even had huge sessions. Just keep grabbing the switch when I'm taking 30 mins to have a seat on the couch.

Stupid Ostrich.
As you can tell, I haven't got far having played an initial hour at the start of the week and then work got in the way. Playing tonight and thought I was well stuck for ages until I realised there was a small hole to drop down and then I found that Ostrich bugger - took me ages to manage to not get eaten.
... and save... and relax.

So I played a few hours of this today and started to get right pissed off with it, with all the backtracking on not seemingly making much progress but now I have new tools, including a flute that has put a right smile on my face

It just keeps going. Layers and layers and layers. It won’t let go.
Send help.
I’m so deep underwater. There’s things in the background. I can’t find the kangaroo and I need to find the music of the cats.

Fez is one of my fave games of all time, as my profile pic implies. Haven't played Animal Well yet but sounds like it may scratch a similar itch

I spent ages getting the flame where you have to avoid being eaten by the chameleon and in all my excitement forgot to save. Went round again and the game glitched and as I was jumping around like a maniac avoiding it, it map jumped me. Third time I did it easy and saved.
It does things to you this game.

I am intrigued by this. But I do wonder why they opted for a graphical style which imo looks worse than Super Metroid SNES? Would be nice if they updated it with extra graphic style options for those who don't like the defaulty "murky" look?
This said I've not played it yet and am basing my opinion on YT videos so I may be well off the mark?

I thought it looked great, especially considering that the whole thing was made by one guy. But if you don't like the style, there's not much to be done about that except get used to it.

Yep, I agree. There is also a lot of shader work going on, giving the graphics some lovely shimmery effects and a sense of background depth as you wander around. The vines and pendant lights swish as you jump around as well which adds visual interest too. It's a good looking game.

This feels like guy was mucking about in his own engine and thought hu thats a fun quirk, they'll figure this out by themselves by accident. I'm liking it so far, there's always something else to do if you get stuck somewhere. Is there any point to turning into that fox from Tunic?

Fez is one of my fave games of all time, as my profile pic implies. Haven't played Animal Well yet but sounds like it may scratch a similar itch Definitely some similarities and I believe the developer says Fez was a major influence. Interesting how much old UK computer games (Speccy etc.) feel like influences too although I don't know if that's coincidence.
