The demo for this game officially goes live today, after its (presumably inadvertent) temporary release a couple of weeks ago. Anyone else planning to download it and have a go?
Initial previews have been pretty positive, with IGN describing it as a cross between Sekiro and Nier: Automata:
Much of the hype has thus far been based upon the protagonist's appearance, with incel douchebags trying to turn the game into yet another front in the never-ending culture war; hopefully that'll recede into the background somewhat when people can actually play it for themselves, but that'll obviously require the gameplay to be as deep as Eve's cleavage.
(On that note, spare a thought for the editor of a certain PlayStation-centric website - between the combat and the fanservice, there's no way he's getting through the weekend without developing carpal tunnel syndrome.)
I'm actually pretty excited for this, as I love the hack and slash genre.
There are so few straight-up action games out there these days - in the AAA space, anyway - with most titles of this ilk being RPGs, or at least having RPG elements, so I'd be delighted to see Stellar Blade succeed. A linear, 25-hour 'character action' game would be most welcome in an era dominated by 60-hour open-world releases.

Defo trying the demo. May climb a ladder.

Speaking of which, their idea of "March 29th" must be different from mine... Normally I wouldn't bat an eye, timezones gonna timezone, but Rise of the Ronin unlocked for me at midnight on the dot on its release date, so I thought this would be available by now too

I think it's due to go live in just over half an hour's time, at 14:00 GMT.

I'll definitely try it out, this always looked good to me from the get go before the anti woke Gamergaters and porn addicts started treating it like the second coming. Think the reason why they're praising it so highly is not just the fan service but the fact that it does look like an actual good game, which is more than can be said for the usual games that they champion. Interesting to see the game appears to be more like Sekiro than Nier in terms of combat, it certainly looks really stylish so I'm definitely keen to see how it feels.

I was looking forward to it when I thought it was a DMC type game. Previews describing it as yet another fucking souls type game has drained most of the interest I had. I do like big jiggling boobs though so who knows.

Will be giving it a go. The trailer from a couple of months ago looked good (I mean the gameplay...).
I do hope the devs have been hiding a trans sidekick or something to piss off the incels.

I like it so far. Design is great, combat feels good and it looks like there's enough depth in combat and tinkering with skills and gear to keep things interesting. Probably not enough for a day 1/full price purchase though, it has too many similarities to too many other games.

Damn it’s pretty good.
I lol’ed at the titillation during the initial cutscene, and the special moves being called beta skills.
Seems like it’s 60fps on balanced mode and feels slick whilst looking decent.
Definitely got Nier, Nioh and Souls/Sekiro vibes. Combat seems good with lots of skills to play with.
Don’t think I’ll be getting it at full price but will keep an eye on it in sales.

We now go live to Push Square headquarters:
"Game's that good, huh?"
"Dunno - I haven't got past the title screen."
Ba-zing!
Okay, now I've got the snark out of my system, I'm really enjoying this. Combat feels great, albeit a touch slower than I'd expected; the music is nice, with a definite Nier flavour; the graphics are very pretty indeed; the voice acting is fine, if unspectacular; and it's not nearly as fanservice-y as I'd feared, for the most part.
I don't think it feels like "another fucking souls type game" - you don't appear to lose anything on death, for instance, and standard difficulty doesn't seem anywhere near as punishing. It's more Devil May Cry than Dark Souls to me.

Combat is really slow and clunky. Just played up to the first boss alongside Tachy. Not quite sure I like how it feels yet, maybe once I expand her skillset. At the moment, the closest comparison I can make is the first Darksiders, but slower. Very simple square + triangle combos at the onset.
Graphically, it’s gorgeous. Playing in resolution mode. It’s 30fps but evenly framepaced so it feels fine to me. Combat’s too slow to care about fluid 60fps anyway.
Music is nice.
We’ll see. I’ll play a bit more of the demo and decide whether I want it to be a day one purchase or if I’m waiting on a sale.
Edit: actually the following city post-cutscene has kind of an ugly PS3 era Unreal Engine look to it, so I guess the graphics are gonna be pretty uneven.

Was surprised by how slow this felt, feels like the dramatic slow mo drags the feel of it down a bit. Had more difficulty parrying some of the regular enemies than the boss which went down first try. The boss challenge at the end is the best part about it as there's more skills unlocked so you get a better sense of what the actual game will play like and it feels good and looks even better. Maybe not worth a full price buy tho

It definitely doesn't have the usual hack and slash combat speed. I didn't think it felt clunky, though - deliberate, perhaps?
Much less sluggish to me than the Swordsman style in Like a Dragon: Ishin! (which I mention 'cause it was the last demo I played).
Some of the skills are gated off for the demo, including the double-jump ability.

I'm really not feeling this. You move really slowly when locked on to enemies, the attacks themselves feel very low impact and borderline unresponsive, especially if you turn down (but not off!) the camera shake to stop it from flipping out. The dodge feels like absolute shit, though the blink skill is quite nice. There's no 'snap' to the animation, which I think is the actual problem, coming from the super sharp Rise of the Ronin. Everything just glides around. Lies of P ended up improving quite a bit between demo and release so it's not impossible to fix.
I hate how items regularly get hidden by the background. If you can just hold down R2 all the time to pick up things, and feel like you have to, then why not just have everything enemies drop get picked up automatically, especially money? Not sure how I feel about them basically lifting the Nights link sound for picking stuff up either. Scanning feels really bad (wait 5 seconds to see stuff for 2) but also extremely necessary. I'm also sure they were trying to be cute when Eve didn't recognise a map stuck on a wall, but I really could do with a map.
I've got the same problem with the music that I often do with MONACA soundtracks where it feels like it's just playing the chorus all the time and screaming at you to feel miserable. Give it a fucking rest for a minute!!
Graphically, it's just all noise aside from your Kim Hyung-Tae greasy woman - see above re: items and scanning. It's not helped by all the stock Unreal 'shit on the camera' effects that you can't turn off. I like the graphics modes though - the 'balanced' option which tries to keep the resolution up at the cost of dipping down to 55fps or so (which is caught by VRR) is nicely implemented.
In short, I'll try an updated demo or see how the PC version ends up after gameplay patches but as is, I'm not buying it. Especially since it's the same week as the new Saga game.

I don’t know that deliberate’s the right word. It still has those over the top PlatinumGames-style animation, it’s just sluggish.

@spookyxelectric Maybe I need to give it more time. I've definitely been guilty in the past of going into demos with serious confirmation bias, and given how excited I've been for Stellar Blade, it's quite possible I'm just seeing what I want to see! Will play some more this evening. uiruki This won't address most of your issues, but there's an auto-collect option for loot in the settings menu.

I’m getting more of a hang of it. The enemies take a lot of damage if you mistime that parry, goddamn. The weird NieR meets Gears graphics are throwing me off a little. or Bayonetta meets Arkham City, but that doesn’t rhyme Edit: the more I look at it, the uglier to sees to me. Aside from the character models, this could've been a PS3 game. Should've been on PS4 also.

I’m quite liking the combat having played around with it a bit more.
I wouldn’t say it’s sluggish for me at 60 fps, but you have to be very deliberate with button presses when doing combos as there is input queing so if you spam it feels disjointed.
Dodge doesn’t seem effective unless you get the perfect dodge. Feels like I enjoy it more playing it like a souls game instead of a batonetta. A bit more cautious, picking moments to strike unless I have beta for special attacks.
It’s annoying it slows you down when locking on and the camera is right up her arse too. Parrying feels good when you get the timing and does loads of damage when stance is broken.
Special attacks feel fast and are good for aoe
I won’t be getting it at release but will see what the live version brings in terms of changes .

Going from a hyper responsive Team Ninja game to something that has a half second wait between pressing attack and the attack animation starting is pretty awful.

It is funny seeing all these twitter accounts falling over themselves to find any excuse to post something about the game, even the most innocuous update like it's a selling point of the game. "You can swim in the game!"

So for those of you who have played both, would you say that the combat in Rise of the Ronin is better than that of Stellar Blade?
