Special Reserve is a name I've not heard in a very long time! I used them a lot for Amiga stuff all those years ago, found one of their Sega magazine ads on another forum for some nostalgia.

I got loads of good stuff from Special Reserve, all for my Amigas A600 and A1200.
It's a bittersweet memory, though, as it was watching the Amiga stock dwindle in their monthly newsletter that made me aware that the heydays of the popular machine were coming to an end, and that, for now, Windows had won.

Hey I can spot a swizz on that Megadrive + 4 games advert. I guarantee that the Shinobi, SoR and Golden Axe are actually on the Mega Games 2 compilation cart, which I would argue is one game.

Is Special Reserve the one that had a membership scheme in it's early days? And you could get a magazine as part of the same deal that was inexplicably about nothing but adventure games, called "Confidential"?

"Bring back Special Reserve," I say. I say that, and then realise that I haven't checked: they might still be going. Loved that shop. Me and some mates would catch the train to the store in Sawbridgeworth once a month.

Anyone ever use gameplay.co.uk? That was a great site that sadly got bought and killed by Game.
Always had great prices and would get any new game to you the day before release.

Gameplay were very good for mail order too, makes me realise that even before the online stores really took off I wasn't buying games on the High Street all that much since the mid nineties.

Electronic Boutique was a magical place back in the day. For my entire student life I rinsed their 10 day guarantee policy, just completing and exchanging every possible game I could get. I did this for about a full year, rotating various local stores, until the cunt - CUNT - of a store manager in Wolverhampton wrote "no more returns" on my receipt and I was stuck with Orphen on the PS2 or something They tried to do similar with me but I pointed out the policy was specifically worded “no questions asked”.

I quite liked EB although I did like the big Game station in Brum a lot, Great staff and I bought a used 360 there. Was really gutted when they got closed down, fucking Game.

I didn't go over the top on the no quibble returns policy at EB but I do remember completing Alien Trilogy on PS1 on launch weekend then took it back as it had pretty much zero replayability.

I stopped with GAME once I realised their pre order guarantee meant fuck all. Multiple times the game wasn't available on day of release. That and the prices weren't great. Few years back now but I saw a used copy of The Witcher 3 for £49.99. Right next to it was a new copy for £50.

Game piled an absolute shit ton on money into their belong arenas despite being warned they weren't going to work.

The biggest fuckup and the thing that stopped me using them at all was the complete disconnect between their online and bricks and mortar business for *years*. Not being able to click and collect, stock check or even honour the same fucking price rendered them basically useless. Have they finally sorted this then? I read that GAME is now basically surviving on its digital sales, but if the two businesses were still separate I didn't understand how that worked. Makes sense though if they consolidated the two Someone on here was complaining about it last week, so I'm going to guess no. Which is ridiculous.

Since I was in town today I thought I'd take a look in GAME, it's kind of sad, hidden away like an embarrassing relative in the back of Sports Direct.
Not a great selection, but there were some genuine bargains.
CEX on the otherhand... Why is it whenever I want to buy anything all the staff are bogged down dealing with sad wankers with multiple extra large, heavy duty shopping bags full to the brim with DVDs?
They then have to scan every box and check every. Single. Disc. Nobody wants your bloody tat. The £2.50 trade in on all your Sex and the City DVDs and what-not will will barely even get a bag of crisps these days. I'd have given you the £2.50 so you'd just piss off and I wouldn't have to wait five minutes, dying inside wondering why anybody watches TV.

It's proper fucking grim in CEX, but it's basically a pawn shop these days. It's the desperation in peoples eyes that get me.

The only reason I use cex is to get a new ps5 controller. You get around €50 - €55 cash depending on colour.
When they're on special offer in other shops I usually end up with a few quid plus a new controller and warranty

Is it me or have CEX prices got a bit silly now, I mean I expected them to raise their prices a tad after Game left the scene but some prices just seem absurd now.

God, Special Reserve. I used to pore over their price list, imaging buying those games. Same with all the ads in the back of Mean Machines advertising “grey imports”.
Good times.

Nah it ain't new they've been full priced bullshit for a while. There's honestly no reason to buy a current gen game from them, I'd say even their older game prices such as ps2 and especially GameCube games are also piss takes. The PS3 and 360 are at least bargain bin prices.

I used to look at the Neo Geo price list too and just imagine having 100 odd quid to buy a game. Did anyone actually know anyone who owned a Neo Geo???
