I think CEX are doing well in handling mobile phones that routinely seem to find it's way into their hands. Yeah, they are pretty much cash converters now. Ive bought a few electronic bits a pieces from them including a Sonos speaker that was definitely stolen.

The last Game I went into (inside a Sports Direct) just had a few games and all the adjacent merch. It also had a darkened room with some PCs in. It looked like you could pay so much a month to have access to a gaming PC. I'm not sure if there's a library of games associated with that too but I did wonder at the time if many kids would be bothered with something like that.

iirc In a bunch of Asian countries, Steam got a massive boost because there were loads of PC Gaming Cafes where all the PCs had Steam with a bunch of games available. I forget if Steam had some official system for it, or if the cafes just did it unofficially.
But that was a few years ago, when very few people in those countries had home PCs, and I dunno if it'd work in the UK market, especially now kids are all on smartphone games.
The UK never had a big internet cafe culture as it was never really needed.
---
Wouldn't have guessed that they're dumping trade-ins mainly because of Sports Direct's cash register system.

Pretty bummed out about this if only for the reason I used to trade in old consoles for new ones.
Don't fancy using CEX as I'd want brand new.

There's one about 40 mins from mine, where I sold an OLED, then picked up a Zelda OLED. Sure, you get concerned about warranty if they disappear, but you normally go through Nintendo/Sony anyway. Also the guy was really nice, and has a great selection of retro.

There's an independent retro store in my town who matches CEX prices. God knows how he's still trading, presumably all online. He refused to take my son's Skylanders set though, which CEX gave him Ā£90 for.

Suppose he's got to flip it.

The story only says they're stopping video game trade ins, quite possible they'll still do hardware as they're still going to be selling consoles and it's a lot more likely they can shift used stock.
Other than CeX, there's always eBay or if you can't be arsed that route there's still MusicMagpie and Amazon has a trade in option too.
MusicMagpie's trade in values can be a bit odd, they'll give more money for an excellent condition PS4 Pro 1TB than a 2TB (which I'm not sure was anything but limited editions), it's still more in cash than than CeX will give though.

Suppose he's got to flip it. Yeah, he said there was no market for them locally. I guess CEX just bang it on their website and hope for the best.

MusicMagpie's trade in values can be a bit odd They offered me a mighty Ā£4.80 for a Pixel 3A last week. To the Man Drawer with you, then.

I am quite fond of my man drawer. Graveyard of phones and tablets past, as well as batteries. The constant revolving use of batteries in this house meant I had to buy a battery tester to make sure duff ones weren't making it in there.

Yeah, ive got quite a graveyard going back some years now so Iāve thought about trying to present them in some way or taking one apart and mounting the exploded chassis or something.
Effort, tho

My old electronics and random cables boxes are ready for action come the post-apocalypse for crafting purposes. I'm sure that's how I'll make some weapons and other devices with random shit and it will save me like it does in video games.

I've started to get a bit paranoid about having so much aging tech with batteries in one place. I should probably have a proper clear out at some point, as I can't really see myself ever using one of my Blackberries again.
Multiple iPods too, which I'm actually quite tempted to get working again with an SD card mod or something as they'd be handy for the OH's car.

Two micro USB cables tied together to strangle someone in Tesco to get the last packet of Rolos.

I keep feeling like I should be able to do something with my old google Nexus 7. I'd be quite happy with turning it into a dedicated ereader, but hassle.

God the original Nexus 7 was a piece of shit! Even out of the box, using it felt like wading through treacle. Not sure why I then went on to buy the HTC Nexus 9, which in fairness was OK for a while but got slower and slower with each update.
I think I ended up chucking the Nexus 7 into a weee bin even though it was still technically functional.

The Nexus 7 was great, for about 3 months before it slowed down to treacle.
Iirc it had some issue where it didn't keep the flash memory properly sorted, so it just got slower and slower.
I did install a custom rom on it at some point, but it took up like 90% of the memory, so it still ran like treacle.

Loved the N7! Form factor was great and so slim as well. Wireless charging too. Had a cradle an everything.

I don't think that's the original one. I heard the v2 was better.

I'm talking about the 2012 one with 1GB RAM here, not the 2013 one which seemed quite nice in comparison from the brief play I had with it.
Yeah, I stuck Lineage (or whatever it was called back then) and possibly something else on it, but by that point it was still too frustratingly slow to use for anything.

My Nvidia Shield K1 was a great bit of kit for a while until that too ground to a halt. The old iPad2 performs better.

Electronic Boutique was a magical place back in the day. For my entire student life I rinsed their 10 day guarantee policy, just completing and exchanging every possible game I could get. I did this for about a full year, rotating various local stores, until the cunt - CUNT - of a store manager in Wolverhampton wrote "no more returns" on my receipt and I was stuck with Orphen on the PS2 or something

I'm not sure if there's a library of games associated with that too but I did wonder at the time if many kids would be bothered with something like that. That sounds exactly like the one we have here, even down to being in a Sports Direct.
I had about 40 PS2/PS3/360 games I wanted to shift from my collection. Quoted music magpie that were gonna give me about Ā£110 for the lot. Organised a pick up from the house which never happened, twice, so opted for CEX instead. Their valuation of my Persona 3 copy alone was about Ā£100. Ā£70 for Persona 4. Think it helped because they had no stock of them on the site. So it all worked out in the end. Two mates of mine use GAME quite a bit and they've already said they'll stop their membership now. Does seem like a shift towards all digital now slowly but surely. Think physical copies will still be released but they'll treat it like vinyl is now, where it's more of a collectors item.

Okay it's hardware as well, email from them today, my choice of font seemed appropriate...(for those on mobile so it doesn't do anything it's Comic Sans).

So the store is essentially dead then, not that it wasn't before. There's basically no point even stepping foot in one.

I can't remember the last trade in I made. I almost never buy physical things anymore anyway. It was a very cost affective way though of gaming.

As Game is giving up on hardware trade in market then they are just giving up on their already dead zombie stores.
In the shopping centre area there is Cex and Game right next to other (there use to be 2 Game and 1 gamestation in the early 2010) I was in Cex today as traded in a game and Cex was busy and game seemed dead at lunch time
