Is the Freelancer mode available for OG Hitman 3 or just the World of Assassination edition? /cannot keep up with IOI's releases management... Freelancer works across all maps, as I understand the World of Assassination includes 1,2 and 3. If you bought 3, you should be good. Don't quote me on that though because it is confusing as all he'll. Trying to buy the game on Steam before they converged everything was a shit show

The only games I played this year that came out this year were Starfield, Diablo 4, Chained Echoes and Dredge.
Of those, Dredge and Chained Echoes were good and the others were just ok...
Don't feel like I've got loads to add to this but I do have a lot to take away - mainly that I need to be playing TOTK and BG3 over Christmas!
edit: and probably then Mario Wonder and Jusant.

Now that I've finished Spiderman 2 it's definitely that. I've struggled to find something to play since because I wanted more of it, which is always a sign of how much I've enjoyed a game.
Might start Zelda TotK, or Baldurs Gate 3. Never played a Baldurs Gate before or D&D so I'm not sure it will be for me, but the praise it's gotten has me tempted.

Baldur's Gate 3 followed by Zelda TOTK for me.
BG3 is everything I was hoping for and after BG1/2 being formative games for me I've quite enjoyed Larian's take on the series. Absolutely amazing how jam packed the city itself is and I've slowed down a bit since arriving in Act 3 just because of how much is going on there!
TOTK seems to get better the more I play of it but I've just lost momentum since BG3 arrived. I think I've still got a dungeon to finish but I will continue to chip away.
Also Super Mario Wonder is just lovely.
I think those are the only purchases I've made of 2023 games. I've got Resident Evil 4 Remake under the tree which I'm also looking forward to!

I guess I did beat Chained Echoes this year too. I'd place it pretty highly, more so than Sea of Stars I think, combat was consistently challenging enough to pay attention to every fight. I think my downsides where the upgrades around the flying suit combat seemed a bit wick and the story in the final third kinda lost the plot a bit. Not even getting to fight the big bad genocidal ruler was a letdown as was the last min revelation from him that he loved his sister actually and did all those big war crimes to wipe out armies, civilians, even his own countrymen to unite the people of the world against the real threat was pretty dumb . Otherwise pretty impressive for a mostly solo effort and an easy recommend

Thanks everyone, that's my playlist for 2025/6 sorted! Failed to keep up with my backlog I reduced during the pandemic.
How's this new Chinese outbreak looking....?

TotK here, but I'm vainly hoping for BG3 as a present.
AC was cool, I like some Gundam nonsense, but didn't hold my attention for long, similarly Diablo 4. Wasn't much else I was all that interested in tbh.
TotK was very blatantly recycling a whole game and then gave me 19 middle fingers to re-explore one of the greatest worlds ever created. In the original, in negative and in the sky. The fucking chutzpah to even suggest that, and then sit back and effectively say "go on then, criticise that you doubtful cunt"

I think Hi-Fi Rush might be close to, if not my GOTY. Came out of nowhere, great gameplay, cracking soundtrack, genuinely funny at times.
The sort of DMC game that you can replay at subsequently higher difficulties and have a blast every time as you only get better at the combos and parries. What a game!

Snowrunner. I know it came out in 2020, but they’re still supporting it with content. It deserves an honourable mention.

I now have played 8 games from this year. Still two more to go (for the record, those are Bramble and Amnesia The Bunker) and I'll even have enough for a top 10. Amazing.
So until I've tried those, let's say my top game so far is Cocoon.

I think the only game I bought this year was Starfield, and it was shit. I even bought it twice and refunded it twice to make sure.

I think I bought Daggerfall and returned it at least 3 times, maybe 4. Good old Electronics Boutique return policies!

Diablo 4!
I can see that it has lots of problems, but for what I wanted - basically just the campaign - it was great. That said, I am not convinced there is enough variety between or within classes. I'll come back to it next year to find out though.

Prompted by the "favourite games not from this year" thread (thanks Bill in the rain ) I've realised that Need For Speed Unbound came out in December of last year - meaning it would have missed the cut for GOTY 2022? Anyway it's not perfect and it's probably not the best thing I played, but I really enjoyed it and it felt like a return to form after the past few years other NFS games.

Playing Cocoon as it got EG's top spot this year.
I really don't get it. It's alright. Hardly GOTY stuff though.

I didn’t play everything this year, and some I only gave a few hours to, but the 2023 game I enjoyed the most this year had to be Like A Dragon Gaiden. I’ve been a fan of this series since the first game on PS2. There have been times I’ve burned out on them because they are really similar, but RGG Studio switching the formula up with the Fist of the North Star, Judgment and Ichiban titles have really made me miss Kiryu. His stoic earnestness in the face of absurdity. The game being shorter than most entries while still having a good amount of silly side content helped with the pacing immensely. It was also nice being back in Osaka, after a couple of games set in Yokohama.
Also honorable mention to Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which I enjoyed for a similar back to basics ideology.

I think I only played 5 new games this year, so a top 5: 1. Baldur's Gate 3I still haven't actually finished it yet, but it's been a long time since a game has absolutely destroyed my life in this way. It is the most immersive immersive sim I've ever played: to an overwhelming degree. 2. Armored Core 6: Fires Of Rubicon
This wins most fun game. It feels like a game that is completely comfortable with the medium and nails it's design mission. It's ludicrous and joyous. Technically flawless too. 3. ZeldaMad that I preferred this to BOTW and gave it 10/10 but it's still 3rd on the list. It's a true marvel of a game, but the Zelda world and lore leave me completely cold. 4. Diablo 4
Obsessed by this for 1 season and never felt compelled to go anywhere near it ever again! Weird. 5. Harry Potter
Very solid, cosy, visually quite breath-taking but ultimately dull and if you play it you go to hell, obviously. Lies of P, Lords of The Fallen, Spiderman 2, Alan Wake 2, Phantom Liberty, Mario, Pikmin, Dredge, Amnesia: The Bunker, System Shock, Robocop don't make the cut cos I ain't played em yet. Highland Song bumps out Harry Potter at the last minute. Christmas treat and it’s lovely.

1) Roadwarden
This is the game that left the biggest impression on me this year despite the fact that I've finished it all the way back in February (I mention this because I tend to forget most of the games I played after a few months). I still listen to the OST every once in a while and doing so is enough to put me right back into that world.
2) Age of Empires II Definitive Edition
Not a game that came out in 2023 but I've spent so much time on it this year that it would be unfair to not include it in this list.
3) Dead Space
This is definitely among the best remakes I've ever played and it's just a great game overall.
4) Hollow Knight
I still can't believe it took me this long to realize how great that game actually is.
5) Alan Wake II
The soundtrack of this game is phenomenal.
