Kinda surprised there wasn't already a thread here discussing children's TV, as this site seems 50% parents, 50% people with arrested development, and 100% people who regret their life choices and dream of a happier past. Anyway, I saw this list on the Guardian and I found it very interesting, especially as I used to work for CITV so I feel I've got skin in the game. And as they seem to have shut down comments already I can't even argue with anyone about all the shows they missed off. So I thought I'd do it on here instead. Spending on kids TV shows by ITV (and probably others) has been dramatically cut in the last decade or so. It was never profitable, but it was part of their remit. In the days of youtube and tikitok and netflix it's pretty much been abandoned, which is very sad.
I could list an endless number of nostalgia inducing 80s and 90s tv shows, but that's been done many times.
I will say that I'm still very grateful for cBeebies and CBBC as they're still doing their best to bring out decent shows - which I'd rather be subjected to than endless tiktok/youtuber shit.
At least if the kids are watching something more than 30 seconds long, with a plot and characters and a story, I can feel slightly better about their screen time.

Yeah the slashing of budgets was really keenly felt. It started pretty much as soon as I got there, and loads of successful shows were cancelled. There were a few years where the only really big new things on the channel were Horrid Henry and US imports such as PokƩmon.
Then when things started calming down they spent a fortune on the Thunderbirds reboot!

Same as above, my boy has his first day of school tomorrow and Iām very grateful that the old terrestrial broadcasters have kept the quality up so high. Compared to the avalanche of noisy cgi shite churned out by Netflix, Dreamworks and Disneyās preschool offering its not even a competition.
Weāve not watched a lot of CITV but the comedian Bec Hill has an Art Attack style show called Makeaway Takeaway that seems pretty fun from the times weāve watched it.

Aye, saw a children's BBC writer/producer saying that they agonise over what to commission, knowing it needed to have educational value etc, only for the internets to churn out loads of crap that at best haven't given it thought, and at worst is downright damaging.

Funny, just last night I was chatting to my 3 kids about the TV shows they each remembered from when they were younger. CBeebies featured heavily - their crafty stuff like Mr. Maker and I Can Cook was at least as good as the fictional animation or puppet shows.
(Obviously Art Attack pisses all over Mr. Maker but it was before their time.)
I happily sit down and watch Bluey with my 7yo, but there's only one "kids" show I catch myself watching on my own and it's The Amazing World Of Gumball. They should do a post-watershed version of it, I reckon they've got the humour for it.

He was still doing Tricky TV and therefore had some promotional commitments but I only met him once. He seemed like a nice guy. To clarify, I worked in the promotions/presentation department rather than making any of the shows.

That was a great list. I mean Knightmare goes without saying (Iām finding myself slowly turning into Hordriss the Confuser as I go greyer and my hair gets weirder) but Iād forgotten about Round the Bend.
Now Iāve got a baby Iāve been dipping back into childrenās TV - where the pick right now is anything that doesnāt have ads.

The comments highlight some notable absentees.
- Pink Windmill and grotbags - Supergran - Bananaman - Cosgrove Hall stuff like Count Dukula.
Loved Press Gang and Children's Ward, great way to cover serious issues in an approachable manner.

The pre SMTV stuff have been largely forgotten but was the highlight of my week. Ghost Train, Top Banana and Gimme 5 were the ones I remember most fondly, and then obviously during summer holidays you had Wide Awake Club / Wacaday. Funny to think how Timmy Mallet assaulting people with a foam hammer passed for entertainment, but it did. And then Transformers was on.

But i can imagine it being expensive.
Kids still watch cITV from time to time (well, the 'kids' section on itvX), but a lot of it is stuff that's on other places too. (though that's true of cBBC too with Pokemon, Transformers, etc..)
My older one is really into the dramas on cBBC, but there just aren't enough of them. She's watched every season of Wolfblood, Next Step, Heirs of the Night, etc.. about 5 times.
I assume those are the expensive ones to make. Plus they all got messed up by Covid. (Worst Witch etc.. seemed on for more seasons and then just never came back)

First job out of uni was a tech in the gas street studio doing, among other things, tech assessing CITV programmes to make sure they wouldnt give kids epileptic fits.

Watch Bluey, it's the rare show that is insulting to neither kids nor adults. Thereās got to be a whole generation of parents now whoāll never be able to listen to Holstās Jupiter without turning into sobbing wrecks thanks to Sleepytime. Speaking of which, the Christmas special of Old Jackās Boat that Russell T Davies wrote where elderly Bernard Cribbins reminisces about his lost wife. Come on!

I can see mine watching it until theyāre 9 or 10. I donāt remember a single educational show from when I was young that was any good. I just watched cartoons.

Thunderbirds was fascinating to witness, being sort of on the inside but not really involved with any of it. They got Weta to make all the sets (it had physical sets with CG characters), and it was incredibly expensive despite them doing it at a vast discount because head of Weta Richard Taylor is a massive Thunderbirds nerd. Our channel exec got to go visit the studio in New Zealand and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The resultant show was very good, and very successful considering it was on CITV (which always struggled against the other channels one way or another) and was, frankly, a genre of show that was deeply unpopular at the time (serialised action-adventure; comedy cartoons were all the rage). The problem was I think ITV had convinced themselves it was their Doctor Who and expected similar returns. I think the toys sold poorly. So I think some people, internally at least, considered it a flop, but it was actually great and did very well for itself all things considered.

I bet. I suspect its probably connected to the License Fee freeze and covid slowing production of new shows but it was very disappointing to see stuff like Cocomelon and that sort if thing slip onto the Childrenās iPlayer. My sonās favourite show since he was about 2 has been Numberblocks. Which is lucky because some of the songs are genuinely really good and heās learning so I donāt feel guilty about it. And outside of that there simply isnāt anywhere else that even makes shows like the Ranger Hamza nature walk shows. Anything live action, informative and playful like that basically only exists in CBBC and to a lesser extent CITV. And then thereās Something Special which really doesnāt and wouldnāt exist outside a terrestrial broadcaster.

I assumed it was all cgi, but with a 'camera' effect to make it seem like miniatures. That's kinda nuts.
My kids have some of the toys, as do their cousins, and I've even seen them for sale in Japan, so I guess it did decently in international syndication (though I doubt there's a huge amount of money in kids shows compared to other types). Mind you, Japan is nuts for Thunderbirds.
Looking at itvX kids stuff, there does seem to be a lot of remakes of nostalgia stuff like Thunderbirds, Sooty, etc.. and I wonder if that kind of stuff sounds better to adults than to the kids of today (who would never have heard of Sooty)

Yep! The Tracy Island set was gigantic. Our exec has a photo of the effects guys stood knee-deep in the water around it, and it must have risen a good foot or so over their heads.
And it was a success, just not the kind of success some at ITV were expecting. Which it never could have been, it was a twenty-minute cartoon, not an hour-long primetime family drama.
Also re: Sooty, ITV have had some version of that show on more or less consistently since it started in the 50s or whatever. When I started there in 2005 I think it was Matthew Corbett's last series, and then after a few years it was taken over by whoever owns it now (I forget his name) who produced a series than ran for several years. Don't know if it's still going but he's still doing alright by the character. He already owned a fairground in (I think) Weston Super-Mare and incorporated Sooty into that, turning it into a sort of Sooty theme park.

It looks like it only exists on YouTube now, but there was a show about 15-20 years ago called Pocoyo that was just delightful. This is one of the ones that needed to be on the Guardian list, because it's just like the kind of thing people rave about on CBeebies. Stephen Fry used to do the voiceover. It was, I believe, a Spanish show that was part-funded by Granada who owned a stake in the IP, so it definitely counts as an "original"!

He's what we can aspire to but might just be a bit too high a bar to clear. It's not fair, really. I mean he says he has a job but do you ever actually see him doing anything? I'm assuming he has an Onlyfans account or something.
