I know this guys who is all about mouthing feminism but literally gets his income from writing the creepiest “mind-control” rape and incest erotica, presumably for shit-smearing lunatics who send him cash to do it. I know this because he so lacks self-awareness and presence of mind that he shared samples of it on Facebook. He was also somehow in a relationship with a young woman out of his league, until I think she finally twigged that the sex-postive polyamory he’d led her into is bullshit that probably only serves creepy dudes masquerading as feminists. He often had open sores on his mouth from whatever diseases he’s picked up. Left the country some years ago, has an interesting ability to attract money to himself.

That’s the thing, he’s very much a beta geek in appearance and can totally give the sense of being quite enlightened, until you listen long enough and do the math. I was pretty grossed out by him before the end.

As the only engagement with the viewer is now via comments (that must fall in line with party policy), it doesn't look like there's a great deal of traffic.
The next Expo will be the acid test I guess.

Eurogamer got a very brief mention (they flashed a screengrab of an article) on Linus's Steam Deck review, which surprised me. Although it's clear Digital Foundry are the ones keeping the lights on IMO.

At this point Digital Foundry may as well make their own website, EG's dragging them down.

I'm surprised you even bother checking it out still.
I used to look at the front page now and again when the forum was there. As soon as they fucked the forum off I fucked off the front page.

Sometimes just to see the odd review but it's amazing how number of comments has just dropped like a stone. Doesn't seem to be much engagement with the community there.

It is a shame.
Not only did it bring together many like-minded individuals that came from video gaming countries other than the US and Japan, but it genuinely had world-beating content at times.
I think my interest started to wane around the time Johnny stopped doing his YT vids on cooking from video game recipes. It almost felt like he’d been told to stop doing it, and I remember feeling a bit down about it.

It does feel a bit “content to maximize SEO”, it’s been a slow progression of that since Reedpop.
Example, that Survivor article is suspiciously timed given the new season premiered yesterday.

Every article is now 50% links to other articles, on top of the huge list of related articles at the bottom of each page.

They discovered that they could write a million articles on Destiny in place if any real substantial content. It hasn't gone the way of Kotaku's bottom barrel content but it's getting there with its 'xyz has a problem' articles that allude to no actual real problems save for 10 people on Twitter or what some knobs said on Reddit.

Call me a raging simpleton, but it was when they decided they couldn't be arsed to do reviews anymore that everything went to shit.
I'm not sure I buy the cost and time argument against doing more reviews either. If Beastmaster can churn out endless summaries of every terrible film he's seen without being paid a penny and without so much as a thanks from any single one of us, then damn it EG pull your God damn finger out your God damn goatse arse and get typing, you fucking work-shy fucks.

I kind of get it with the reviews though, from an ROI perspective they’re hot garbage. 40+ hours to play the game, plus writing the damn thing, editing etc, vs 30 minutes of rewording a press release for the same click through rate and ad hits.

And not only is it very expensive content, but there is a horde of people online willing to provide their reviews for free.
Ironically, I made many a game purchase decision based on what I read on Ye Olde Eurogamer website. But it was on the forum, not the reviews section, that I consulted.

I think they did do a ‘why we don’t review much’ article last week during the release deluge for their supporter.
And, yeah, I do totally get it. They aren’t going to pay someone less than minimum wage pro-rata to review this weeks latest 100hr Ubisoft google map

Just play a few hours and take a punt! You can get a good sense of most games after a day or two with them.
Whack a disclaimer on there to say how many hours you've spent with it, stop trying to be all wanky with the prose, get it out. Bish bash bosh.

Especially given people will watch streamers or video reviews etc. I don't like it, can't stand all that, but I can see why it made sense commercially.

They don’t do any reviews because they’re not really into games most likely. Games “journalism” isn’t like it used to be
I’ve only ever used the forum so don’t know any of the writers, however some of their vids popped up in my YouTube reccs so I watched them
I don’t know if they are the people that write for EG but wow they’ve not played many games before, quite funny but completely inept

FWIW RPS do still write reviews in the reedpop camp. Appreciate that's no good for console only stuff though.

I thought the main reason you got into games journalism was because you liked playing games, imagine if top gear said “yo, driving is a bit of a chore, you just sit in traffic and it takes hours to get to alps or Italy. Frankly I can’t be arsed sitting in that Citroën they sent for a long term test any more, here’s the editors thoughts on the miniature world of fruit sticker design instead (premium only)”

Did people here actually read EG reviews, back when they did reviews? I remember a lot of complaining about Walker, Bramwell and the like, so it feels a bit weird when there's nostalgia about it.
Come to think of it, what actually was/is the gold standard for written reviews? Edge? Something else?

Aren't they also supposed to get games pre-release?
It's all good and well having NoobKiller99 reviewing a game on YouTube on release day but Shirley EG gets a copy well in advance which allows them time to both play and write a review?
Playing and writing about games doesn't seem like an unbearable burden. If it is I'm sure they could contract the work out to some young eager beavers. (Matron)
