I normally feel like I've missed out on things in these sort of conversations, but this time, I'm not so fussed.
(fwiw, I have seen the Potter movies and they're ok)

Yeah I always thought Buffy looked like a pile of crap, and assumed people just watched it because SMG had that hot girl next door vibe.

To say Buffy is the same level as Charmed is surely just being contrarian for the sake of being contrarian.

Charmed wasn't even in the same sport, let alone league, as Buffy.
Don't get me wrong - I haven't watched it in 20 years and it's probably aged horrifically but Buffy was a massive cut above (and influence) on the 90s/00s teen goth shit.
Anyway, I like the points made about the uselessness of wizard qualifications. Aren't they forbidden from using magic outside of Hogwarts? It's the equivalent of RADA or LAMDA students being forbidden from performing outside of school. How the fuck do they pay their bills?

Only under 18s can't use magic outside or school.
The real stupid bit is having any wizards that are poor, like the Weasleys. They can just magic stuff.

I'm amazed Buffy has fans on here, it's the same level of shitness that Charmed is. And that level is really shit. They aren't even in the same country, let alone the same ballpark.

Yeah but they're poor at magic, and ginger, and have too many kids, and ginger, and they didn't learn English or maths and had no qualifications that meant anything outside of magical people because they live alongside the muggles but maybe not because they really struggle with the vernacular. I have no idea.

Fair enough, the acting and effects were better in Charmed.

I mean better acting doesn't make something better overall.
Also, Eliza Dushku.

Do they ever actually explain why the Weasleys are poor in the book? It seems like you can use magic to do or make anything so it looks like they just choose to be skint.

They never learnt the 'Cashius Generatium' and supplementary 'Avoidio Hyper Inflatoria' spells during their time at Hogwarts. Too much time bunking off behind the magic bike sheds.

In the movies at least the Weasley’s have a giant house that’s seemingly full of stuff they’ve magicked up, so I guess they’re not doing too badly.
It’s only really school books, branded brooms and clothes that they don’t really get and presumably there are some copyright rules in magic world.

That's Big Magic for you, copyrighting all the spells. Or only letting enchants work with their brand of wands.

Maybe now they'll have the creative license to finally show that Dumbledore is gay. JK just sorta forgot to mention it in the books after all and revealed it through Twitter cause she was bored. All those JK fans leaping to her defense for Hogwarts Legacy will be all in favor of it right? Speaking of which
Now's your chance to right that wrong, Joanne. I'm totally sure the alt-right weirdos that now make up a sizable portion of your fanbase won't be driven into a frothing rage by this.

Buffy might not have aged well but The Body is a legitimately great episode of television.

Do they ever actually explain why the Weasleys are poor in the book? It seems like you can use magic to do or make anything so it looks like they just choose to be skint. That's the obvious problem with basing a story around magic that can do anything, and that anyone can wield relatively easily. It has all the same issues as time travel when developing a coherent plot. If Rowling had simply made magic extremely difficult to use - so much so that wizards had to specialise in one specific spell - it would have grounded the world, leaving far more room for concepts like wealth, as well as making characters themselves more interesting if they had a 'signature' spell that they brought to the table, that somewhat defined their character. As it stands, why is there even a concept of money and banks in Harry Potter? It seems completely superfluous in a world of infinite magic.

I don't think she thought that deeply into the rules (she's not Brandon Sanderson after all).
There was a rule that you can't create food, but then there are inconsistencies where they create animals or transfigue things.
The Philosopher's stone was supposed to be able to turn things into gold. Which implies that you can't turn things into gold by other means. can you turn them into Diamonds? Who knows.
There's also clearly a level of skill and craft that goes into making things like Wands or Racing Brooms, otherwise everyone could just transfigure theirs into the best one available.
So I guess you could infer that transfigurations are temporary, or there's some kind of conservation of energy, or simply a limit based on the abilities and power of the wizard.
Or she just did stuff that was cool without putting too much thought into the edge cases or wider implications.

I suspect it's the latter, along with being able to conjur up useful macguffins and devices to move the plot along.
Ah to be honest there's nothing wrong with that approach as she's hardly the first author to have inconsistencies and holes in the internal logic.
I'd normally just ignore it but as she's a spiteful shit it's fun to poke holes.

My favourite spell is the one that fixes everything and ties up loose plot threads at the end of the film.

Rowling has gone on record to say she's happy with a black girl as Hermione so I personally hope it happens just to see the mental gymnastics the usual crowd are gonna have to do.

If they're using the same Music, same Logo and same Hogwarts, are they really going to retell the same story with different actors? Isn't that just weird?
