Total aside but this being a Darlington derby is a nice bit of trivia - Pickford and Schmeichel both made their first senior starts there.
But yeah, England seemed to have Denmark rocked for the first 20 minutes or so then eased off the aggression. I don’t really understand why. Surely it makes more sense to do what other teams have done and put the game beyond the opposition with a second before having a rest.
Easier said than done obviously, Denmark can certainly play, but if all your best players are forwards why not cut your cloth accordingly?
It feels like putting yourself where you need to chase a goal back to regain the lead would be harder work than pressing the advantage when you first have it. Plus defending is knackering so inviting the opposition onto you feels like a false economy. He’s got results with it no doubt but it is like England only play to three quarters of their potential.

As I said the other day, it's effective on tournaments but christ is it dull. It is dull but I never understand why we never ever just "fucking go for it"? It's a tournament, you set your stall out with your intention and let everyone know you've turned up. It's so annoying. |

The problem is it's effective until it isn't. Every time it's been truly important to rely on keeping things tight and running the clock down it's gone tits up. We also never read the actual game and just seemingly go "if we go 1-0 up we always do A, if we're level we do B". Games like today and against Italy in the last final the opposition are as clear as day there for the taking and a manager should be able to identify that and take a stranglehold.
