He has never played badly in a tournament for us. We look far worse without him and I think Pickford might be more exposed as a result of a different looking 4 in front of him.

Easily England's best centre back in the air. Most of his problems come from his pace and slow turning circle which means he struggles with quick footed players. He can't play a high line as he gets caught out with it.

Yeah, exactly. He suits the way England play. Backs to the wall or low block against a big lump of a CF and he'll do a job.

Have we covered this yet?
Sickeningly familiar press attitudes already.
Without Sterling and Rashford, Saka is going to cop a lot of this isn't he?

They have already started on Mainoo as well, I'm sure he will be the one to miss a penalty at some point.

Nonsense. I for one look forward to the wave of jingoism that will accompany us winning the Euros.

It’s basically just setting up every racist moron to have an open season on him. Poor kid.
Headlines should read “It was a fucking friendly, dickheads”

I genuinely don't get the Black Ice one. What am I missing?

Nonsense. I for one look forward to the wave of jingoism that will accompany us winning the Euros. There were England fans on here that didn't want England to win the Euros last time because of the English fans getting to celebrate. It was ridiculous. I do think one of them was Geefe though.

I genuinely don't get the Black Ice one. What am I missing? We played Iceland and slipped up. Black Ice is slippy. On the surface. Together with the pic of Saka though, it could be taken entirely differently.

I didn’t want them to not win but I think we all know that a very large minority of England fans were working very hard to get coked up and ruin it for everyone. There’s a Netflix doc about it and everything. It is tough with England as a plastic Scot* because the current team is very young, talented and likeable. At least in the past the awful fans were only cheering on John Terry so it made being a smug dickhead doing banter in the comments quite an easy position to hold. Wrighty is right to highlight what is happening there though. Tournaments really seem to encourage the worst instincts of the press. * Family is Scottish and we’ve had very few opportunities to cheer since the 1999 Five Nations

Maybe it might make those fuckers enjoy it slightly less, having already set him up to be their fall guy.

Yeah, I see Watkins got a lot of stick for not scoring, yet Kane didn't get anywhere as much.

They’re all wicked players. If they weren’t guys like Grealish and Maguire wouldn’t have been left on the bench.
The loss might have been as simple as having Pickford take a day off. You need these matches to figure out who gels with who.
But… it was the most boring fucking thing in the world to watch. That much is true.

Anything less than reaching the semi finals would seem like an under performance I would wager.
Always have hope for England but nagging reality also reminds me that winning it seems unlikely.
Still something to watch to remind ourselves (again) that top end prem games are almost always better than 95% of international games played…

International teams are never as slick. But for drama, tension and what’s at stake…other way round for me. Bloody love international tournaments…even if UEFA and FIFA are doing their best to fuck it up with 24/48 teams, so killing a lot of the stakes/tension during the group stages

I always want England to do well, even though I am not English. Just because it's the players I watch every week in the Prem and I pretty much support all the British Isles teams.
In our work competition I do have England going out in the Quarters to Italy on pens..

Question is, is it worth me waking up at 4am for England vs Serbia? What are the odds of that being a fun game?

It's quite easy to work out : you get up at 04:00 and it'll be the absolute worst game you've seen for ages. You don't and it'll be a stunning start to the tournament and so exciting you'll forget your tiredness for the rest of the day. It's not going to be the second.

That's what usually happens. Or I wait until the later, more important games in the tournament and then they're out before I actually get to watch one.
Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia don't sound like they're going to generate any particularly exciting games. Or is that unfair?

Didn’t realise until today but I’ll be in Madrid for Spain’s opening game. Should be fun.
