This is out today?! It keeps slipping my mind for some reason. think it's because I've been waiting so fucking long since it was first announced they were working on it through to it being released on PC last year and now FINALLY it's out.
Wrong time of year though! It's a winter game if ever there was one. I think it's actually set to be delivered today after just checking my emails but it'll be at least tomorrow evening before I can look at it.
Hmph.

Mine's due to arrive today at some point, but I don't know when I'll get around to booting it up.
PS5 reviews have been a bit mixed: 6/10 from Pish Square (yes, that was a typo, and yes, I opted to leave it as-is!), and 73 at Metacritic.
It sounds as though the console editions are pretty much straight ports from the PC version, meaning that everything in the game was designed for keyboard and mouse rather than being optimised for controller - kind of disappointing, I must say.

To be honest I was expecting a bit of clunk regards the controls eitherway. I don't know how you would translate it to controller well, so I'm not put off by that, or the PS review. It's fairly obvious who this game is aimed at and I'm squarely in the demographic for it (played it when it came out originally and nostalgia is fuelling this purchase more than anything). I know I'll be naturally more forgiving of some of the less modern aspects of it purely because I want that kind of experience.

It was on my steam wishlist forever but never bothered taking it any further. It is on my PSN wishlist now as well, but not inclined to buy it there either.
Probably get it half price in an sale at some point

wunty That's both perfectly fair and completely understandable. I guess my thing, speaking as a gaming neophyte who has been spoiled rotten by modern design conventions, is that I'm not in this remake's demographic; accordingly, I'm a tad concerned that it'll prove more frustrating than enjoyable for me, and I can't help but wonder whether I'd be better off with something inspired by System Shock than the original game itself.

There's a lot of aspects of SS1 that they improved upon for the sequel. The original was hard and completely unforgiving, but then that was par for the course back then really wasn't it. I mean, the second one is nuts as well. Remembering where each chemical storeroom is, backtracking across decks at a time, the endless research, maintenance for weapons etc. These games didn't fuck about. That was why the stations that bring you back to life are such a godsend. Without them it would seriously be brutal. The one thing they dropped for the second one was the cyberspace sections and I'm looking forward to them in particular.
It was why I was so disappointed in BioShock originally. It was so dumbed down in comparison. I like my games to straddle me and slap me in the face whilst shouting obscenities in a German accent, not wine and dine me.

Sounds like Push Square’s biggest issue with the game is that it plays like a game from yonks ago. Like, oh no this System Shock remake plays like System Shock.

Exactly. All the negatives they cite aren't even negatives to me. I don't want any of that shit changed. Why would Nightdive want to change it all as that wasn't the intention behind this.

Yeah this is one game where I want it like it originally was, maybe with it looking and sounding a bit better maybe.
Definitely not bothered about reviews unless it's 1 out of 10 because of serious bugs etc.

Anyone else getting this error on the Playstation Store?
Search for it and the search returns the listing for System Shock with the price ‘free’ but when you click through to the game’s page it says “not available for purchase” and that the option isn’t available because I haven’t purchased System Shock.

Ha! That's quite the mental image, Wunts I absolutely adored the BioShock series, but even the original game in that franchise is much more modern than System Shock; meanwhile, there are still SS-inspired games out there I haven't yet played, such as Prey 2017 and Dead Space 2023.
Thinking about it, this is an issue I've had with various remakes over the years: - As much as I loved Demon's Souls, it's my least-favourite Soulsborne game due to how outdated some of the underlying elements feel.
- Shadow of the Colossus was a great experience overall, but the core gameplay felt as archaic as the updated graphics were modern.
- Mass Effect 1 was good janky fun, but it wasn't a patch on 2 and 3 as far as I was concerned.
This is why I'm loath to start my Resident Evil journey with REmake, and figure I'd be better off with the modern games (2, 3, 4, 7, and Village) - I'm such a 'modern gaming' softie that I reckon I'd bounce off something that old, no matter how well it may hold up today.

Games like Prey, System Shock, Deus Ex, Thief, Dishonoured are so rare these days I'll bite the hand off anything that can transport me back to the glory days of 2000.

And in relevance, I'm playing this right now, and it's fucking 90s fantastic. For those wanting to scratch that itch, welcome home

There is a really weird bug though. If you're meleeing a monster, as you have to at the start, if it's toe to toe, sometimes you get stuck on the corpse and have to reload. It's happened about 4 times now in the last hour, so hopefully that will be patched, as it's a bit of a pain in the arse

Ha, sounds good man. Although that does sound a bit odd getting stuck on a corpse, forcing you to run through it.

Don't remember ever getting stuck on a corpse in the PC demo. Still haven't gotten around to the whole thing *shame*

Also, the ambient music is terrifyingly brilliant

Man, this just does a perfect job of looking like a hi-res version of what my teenage memories think the original looked like. It’s beautiful.
Sweet door code 451, this is good.

It might just be me, I don't know yet. Also, the ambient music is terrifyingly brilliant I'll admit, I do miss the weirdly upbeat Soundblaster music from the original DOS game. Some of the best soundtrack of the time imo. And actually somewhat fitting too, since System Shock still wasn't quite supposed to be a horror game like its sequel, but more like Doom meets Ultima Underworld.
